  • Maintaining U.S. leadership in AI requires, in part, rapidly increasing the nation's energy capacity and ensuring we have the labor force to build an energy abundant future. That’s why Google.org is supporting with a grant to provide training to 100,000 electrical workers and support the creation of 30,000 new apprenticeships nationwide by 2030. AI presents the United States with a generational opportunity for extraordinary innovation — growing the economy, creating jobs, accelerating scientific advances, improving health and educational outcomes, and strengthening security. Leading in AI, however, will require an accelerated effort to increase the capacity of the existing, sometimes antiquated U.S. energy system. Building upon nearly two decades investing in energy innovation and policy, today Google is sharing 15 policy opportunities to power a new era of American leadership. By unlocking growth of advanced electricity resources and grid infrastructure, the U.S. would enable all sources of electricity to contribute to a more reliable and affordable energy future. Many of these proposals have been incubating in policy circles for some time, reach across a broad base of stakeholders and are drawn from the broader discussion of policy options. They now require constructive public and private collaboration in three key areas:  1. Accelerate innovation and investment in advanced energy generation -- geothermal, advanced nuclear, natural gas generation with carbon capture and sequestration, demand response and energy storage -- in addition to mature variable energy technologies that are currently waiting to interconnect to the grid. 2. Optimize use of the existing grid and unlock construction of new transmission infrastructure, which is often constrained by planning and permitting timelines and misaligned incentives. 3. Develop the labor force required to construct new American infrastructure, including training programs to address the shortage of skilled electricians. Today Google announced an effort to help train 100,000 electrical workers and 30,000 new apprentices in the United States alongside the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) Workers and the National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA) Contractors Association, supporting the electrical training ALLIANCE. Together, government, industry, and civil society can ensure America has the energy and the skilled workforce needed to power AI and lead the future. https://lnkd.in/e2nHCPfk

  • The U.S. has a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a new era of American innovation and growth. AI offers immense potential – from economic growth to job creation and scientific advancements. However, fully realizing this opportunity requires an accelerated effort to increase the capacity of the U.S. energy system. Today we released a new paper, Powering a New Era of American Innovation, discussing 15 additional policy opportunities to help the United States unlock the growth of advanced electricity resources and grid infrastructure, enabling all sources of electricity to contribute to a more reliable and affordable energy future. Part of the challenge is ensuring we have the workforce to build for the future. That's why Google.org is supporting the electrical training ALLIANCE with a grant to equip 100,000 existing electrical workers and train 30,000 new apprentices by 2030 with AI-powered learning tools, including scholarships to the Google AI Essentials course. We held a great event this morning serving as a capstone to our series, "The Ones to Watch: Advancing with AI," in partnership with Google. I sat down with Rep. Laurel Lee (R-Fla.), who emphasized the need for Congress and the private sector to work together to appropriately regulate artificial intelligence and prepare the workforce for an AI-powered world. I also chatted with Lisa Cohen Gevelber, founder of Google's economic opportunity initiative, Grow with Google, about the crucial role of AI and the importance of everyone learning to use the technology. Some key takeaways: 💡 On Medicaid & reconciliation: Lee said the House Energy & Commerce Committee could meet its targets without substantial cuts to the program. She said the panel may consider raising money through spectrum or cuts in other areas, like environmental programs, to reduce the impact on Medicaid. 💡AI & the Hill: Congress is notoriously slow to adopt new technology, but Lee said lawmakers are getting more exposure to AI and thinking through options for how it can help in interacting with the public. "That is one of the things I think is a real opportunity for us to modernize the way we think about how we help constituents," Lee said. From my fireside chat with Lisa Gevelber: 💡Power of AI: Gevelber said "everybody" should learn to use the technology. "I think AI can be a really powerful tool, whether you're trying to get stuff done faster in your day job or have it help you advance your expertise or creativity or productivity" she said. 💡Higher Ed & AI: As colleges grapple with how to approach AI, Gevelber said "I think the key thing is, don't ban the tools." She added that Google has created an AI course for teachers to learn how to use it to empower students and help them learn better. Check out the full project here: https://lnkd.in/eSwwpAXv

Great to attend the The World Bank/International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings in DC this week and meet with leaders from around the world. A big topic was how countries can adopt AI to better serve their citizens. They understand that they can't just focus on the risk of AI’s misuse, but also the risk of "missed use" – missing the incredible opportunity that AI is presenting to promote economic growth and development in sectors ranging from agriculture to healthcare, energy to education. Google is deeply committed to helping governments around the world seize AI’s opportunity. This week, we released a new report highlighting “AI Pioneers” or countries that are making concrete investments that facilitate AI adoption across 3 key pillars: ✅Investing in AI Infrastructure: Cloud, data centers, connectivity, energy. ✅Building a Skilled Workforce: Public sector adoption, AI education, support for small businesses. ✅Creating Supportive Regulation: Risk-based approaches, ethical AI deployment, clarifying rules around fair use, and competitiveness. Read the report to learn more. https://lnkd.in/eCc9UmhB

  • How can AI make your daily commute smoother? The Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) partnered with Google to find a way to share important information with riders.
