Urban Science is bolting from the Renaissance Center, another blow for the struggling downtown Detroit skyline landmark that is targeted for a $1.6 billion-plus overhaul. Detroit-based Urban Science is downsizing its office footprint to about 35,000 square feet in the Dan Gilbert-owned One Campus Martius building. Its new offices will be next door to Hudson’s Detroit, where General Motors Co. will be moving its longtime headquarters to in January. Construction on Urban Science's 15th-floor space in Bedrock Detroit's One Campus Martius building is expected to begin later this fall and wrap up in the spring. Scott Sutherland School of Architecture & Built Environment - Robert Gordon University has been running the ACES programme (6-week initiative with local secondary schools) designed to inspire young people to explore future career pathways in Architecture and the Built Environment. This year, pupils were challenged to design a small-scale community hub, resulting in some fantastic projects: a community bakery, a library of the future, a bike café, community gym and concepts that build meaningful connections with the landscape. It’s been a brilliant few weeks of creativity, collaboration, and conversation; full of proud moments and a real sense of possibility for the next generation of designers and place-makers. The Transforming Housing and Homes for Future Generations project, which has been collaborating with communities in Swansea and Bristol to co-design liveable homes that go 'Beyond Net Zero', has received a significant boost. Thanks to over £3 million in additional funding from the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), the project will continue for another two and a half years. This innovative project, now featured in an exhibition at the Design Museum, aims to redesign council-built housing from 1920s to 1940s. These homes, which make up around 1.1 million residences still lived in today, are set to benefit from cutting-edge solutions to enhance their quality and sustainability. The team, comprising researchers from Bath and fellow GW4 Alliance universities, along with businesses, local authorities, and community groups, has been hard at work.
