Congratulations to Chemical Engineering student Siobhain Doyle on winning targetjobs UK's Female Undergraduate of the Year Award 2026. A fantastic and well-deserved achievement that reflects her talent, dedication, and the excellence fostered across the Faculty of Engineering and Design.

Researchers in our Department of Mechanical Engineering at University of Bath are exploring an exciting new use for agricultural waste from prickly pear cactus plants, turning it into a low-carbon reinforcement for construction materials! 🧑🔧🏜️ By using the cactus’s natural honeycomb-like fibre network, the team is developing a renewable, biodegradable alternative to synthetic fibres used in conventional composites. The potential is for stronger, more sustainable materials to be used in low-impact construction and design. From wall panels and cladding to automotive interiors and sports equipment, this research is opening up fascinating possibilities for a greener future. A new study from our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering examined the impact of the UK’s first Net Zero Carbon planning policy, finding that it is already influencing how new homes are designed through increased adoption of energy-efficient technologies and renewable energy systems. Led by Dr Will Hawkins, Lecturer in Structural Engineering Design, this research is helping shape the future of net-zero housing and sustainable construction in the UK and highlights the importance of understanding how planning-stage carbon targets translate into real-world building performance, supporting more effective approaches to decarbonising the built environment. During #DementiaActionWeek, we are proud to highlight pioneering research led by Dr Despina Moschou from the Department of Electronic & Electrical Engineering at our faculty. This University of Bath-led project is developing an innovative organ-on-chip platform to investigate the connection between diabetes and dementia, bringing together engineering, bioscience, and healthcare research to better understand two major global health challenges. By creating more accurate human tissue models, the research aims to accelerate discovery, improve understanding of disease progression, and support the development of future treatments, while reducing reliance on traditional testing methods. It is a powerful example of how engineering research at Bath is driving impact far beyond the laboratory, advancing technologies that could improve lives and healthcare outcomes worldwide. Congratulations to Amaury van Trappen de Buggenoms and Thomas Santini, two University of Bath engineering alumni, who have been named in the Forbes 30 under 30 Europe list. Amaury is recognised for his work developing biodegradable alternatives to fossil-based plastics, while Thomas is pioneering next-generation autonomous bodyguard satellites. Before coming to University of Bath, Duncan M Ng'enda already had an engineering degree and a pilot’s licence from Kenya, but he wanted to build the softer skills needed to move into management. He chose Bath for its modern, practical master’s that combined engineering and management, and gained far more than he expected. Alongside developing his career, he made friends for life, discovered a love for Bath and the English countryside, and went on to secure a graduate role in consulting that set him on his current path. 🧑💻 🧑🏫 Today, Duncan is a Director at KPMG, where he leads client engagements in financial services consulting. His journey is a great example of how studying at Bath can open unexpected doors. 🧑💼 ✨ His advice to future students: ‘Don’t think of Bath as just an academic experience — embrace the culture, challenge yourself, and make the most of everything it has to offer!’.
