Earlier this month, Catherine Ramsden and Euan Ferguson shared the story of Isleworth and Syon School's evolving retrofit over 10+ years at the Education Estates® Exhibition | Conference | Awards in Manchester. Our intention was to inspire both estates teams and designers by demonstrating the benefit of assessing the masterplan as a whole, identifying key areas for improvement, and understanding the potential ripple effect across the estate. The impact of cumulative, low-cost, low-carbon interventions, ranging from retrofitting science labs to converting a disused school hall into a drama theatre, extends far beyond the immediate area, into the rest of the campus and beyond to the local community. We shared the stage with Clare Cole, client representative from the University of East Anglia, and Jon Wright and Alasdair Jones of Purcell, Heritage Consultant and Architect, respectively. Their presentation addressed the challenges and opportunities associated with the retrofitting of post-war buildings, with particular focus on the brutalist UEA Campus. It was interesting to hear Clare's reflection of the client's perception of their buildings being categorised as 'listed', and how the narrative has progressed from frustration to appreciation. Construction is underway at UNSW’s Canberra City campus — the university’s new home for innovation, research and learning in the heart of the capital. Hassell is proud to be leading the architecture, interior design and landscape architecture for the first stage of this major new campus, which will establish a vibrant, sustainable and connected precinct expected to attract around 6,000 students and educators. Located at the corner of Constitution Avenue and Coranderrk Street, the two new multipurpose buildings are designed to foster collaboration across disciplines including defence, cybersecurity, and digital engineering. Across Imperial, the Property Division has been working tirelessly to enhance and reimagine the spaces that support our community’s world-class teaching and research. From carefully restoring heritage landmarks to creating modern, flexible learning environments, our teams have delivered a remarkable programme of work over recent months: 🔸 The Queen’s Tower – a major phase of restoration is now complete on this Grade II listed landmark. The tower’s stonework, carpentry and copper dome have all been meticulously renewed, with scaffolding now being slowly removed. 🔸 The Great Hall – a full redevelopment is under way to make this iconic space more versatile, accessible and technically advanced, ensuring it can host everything from major lectures to community events for decades to come. 🔸 170 Queen’s Gate – further improvements are bringing this historic building fully up to date, including new lifts for accessibility and a commercial kitchen to support catered events. 🔸 Sherfield Building – new lecture theatres, social spaces and student-facing service areas have been created as part of our Great Environment vision. 🔸 White City Campus – a new pedestrian and cycle bridge now connects our campus directly to Wood Lane, improving access and safety for everyone. Elsewhere, we’ve upgraded cafés, study areas and residences, introduced new food outlets, improved accessibility, and invested in new research infrastructure such as a robotic 3D printer for advanced metal manufacturing. McDavis Hall at Ohio University is nearing completion and set to open in August 2026, offering over 591 beds with suite-style rooms and energy-efficient features. The project includes vibrant outdoor spaces to enhance campus connection and will be followed by renovations of older residence halls starting in 2027. At the same time, institutions are under increasing pressure to preserve their heritage assets while balancing financial viability and sustainability goals. Against this backdrop, we brought together a group of experts in education estates and design to explore these challenges. The conversation ranged widely – from schools and further education colleges to 20th-century university buildings – and here we’ve captured some of the key insights from what was a rich and thought-provoking discussion. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗚𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗕𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 Many 20th-century buildings, we heard, have reached their “best before date – but not necessarily their use-by date. “The key question is whether a building has “good bones” – a solid structure that can be adapted for new purposes and endure for another generation. 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗙𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰 Construction quality and maintenance play a vital role, while fire protection and life-safety standards are critical concerns, particularly in older cores. We shouldn’t be too quick to dismiss concrete structures that have surpassed their nominal 60-year lifespan; if they were well built and properly maintained, they may remain viable for decades to come. Of course, good bones also need a good skin. 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗻 𝗨𝗻𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗙𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 But the physical state of a building isn’t the only consideration. From the client perspective, we were reminded that many of today’s students will go on to work in industries that don’t yet exist. Flexibility is therefore essential – schools, colleges and universities must be able to adapt to meet the needs of emerging sectors. Yet many buildings constructed in the 1950s and 60s, products of post-war austerity, were tightly optimised and offer limited scope for adaptation – a stark contrast to the more generous proportions of the Victorian era.
