"The Harness, Not the Model: Why Supervision Still Matters" AI coding agents have evolved from autocomplete to autonomous systems. The key developments are: (1) Context Engineering—strategically feeding agents information through skills, specs, and MCP servers to improve results; (2) More Autonomy, More Risk—agents now work unsupervised in cloud and CI/CD, but face security threats like prompt injection and secret extraction; (3) Cost Explosion—multi-turn agent workflows now cost far more than initial predictions; (4) Harness Engineering—building safety nets through structural tests, linters, and feedback loops rather than expecting perfect autonomous code; (5) Speed vs. Quality—pressure to move faster can lead to burnout and quality issues. Bottom line: Don't just give AI autonomy. Build a harness of constraints, feedback mechanisms, and deterministic tools around it. Trust depends on knowing your context, your feedback loops, and your risk tolerance.

While I realize that leveraging AI can make engineers more productive and may reduce the number of people needed on each team, I believe this way of thinking is risky. The only way to create a senior software engineer is to invest in mid-level engineers. By displacing almost all junior engineers, we risk undermining our future talent pipeline as current seniors move into management and management retires. If you want to build a quality team of capable seniors, start with the base and invest in their growth. Make it worth it for them to stay with your company and help them develop into the senior engineers you need.

My conference paper titled, "Artificial Intelligence for Inclusive Growth" was presented this morning. The paper will be available soon on the Innovative Academic Researcher IAR @https://iarpublisher.com/ Abstract, Artificial intelligence (AI), including generative AI, is accelerating diffusion across public services and private enterprise. Whether this expansion produces inclusive growth depends less on technical capability than on institutional design: who can access AI-enabled services, how work is redesigned, how high-impact systems are governed, and how gains are distributed. This paper proposes an implementation framework that organizes inclusive AI growth into four interdependent pillars—Access, Augmentation, Accountability, and Allocation—and translates the framework into policy pathways and operating playbooks for governments, universities, and firms. It further outlines sector applications in healthcare, education, and finance, and concludes with a focused research agenda to measure what works over the next 24 months. The paper’s central claim is that inclusive outcomes are achievable when AI deployment is treated as an auditable governance system with measurable distributional targets, rather than as a standalone technology adoption initiative. Does expanding engineering enrollment really increase graduation output? Many higher education systems respond to engineering skill shortages by expanding state-funded enrollment. The underlying assumption is straightforward: more admitted students → more graduates. However, longitudinal administrative data tell a more nuanced story. Using 2014–2024 national data, we compared two indicators across fields of study: – admission competition, – student retention (completion within the normative period). ⬇️ The chart below highlights a critical pattern. Engineering programs (blue dots) cluster in the area of low competition and low retention. Under such conditions, expanding enrollment does not translate into proportional growth in the number of graduates. This suggests that the core issue is not only student motivation or academic difficulty. It is also a matter of policy design — how admission quotas are set and how resources are allocated. In our recent article, we argue that retention rates should be treated as a program-level efficiency indicator, helping policymakers and university leaders assess whether enrollment expansion actually delivers the intended outcomes.
