Dr. Najam Hassan reposted thisDr. Najam Hassan reposted thisCollegiate associate professor of computer science at UMGC, Najam Hassan, PhD, has been selected as a National Science Foundation National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) AI Education Fellow, one of 25 in the inaugural cohort. This national honor recognizes Hassan’s long-standing leadership in artificial intelligence education, from helping launch Maryland’s first bachelor’s degree in AI to contributing to statewide efforts on responsible and ethical AI. NAIRR fellows are tasked with shaping how students, educators, and institutions across the country access and learn with emerging AI technologies. For UMGC learners, this year-long fellowship will translate to even stronger alignments between what they learn in the classroom and what today’s employers need. Through the NAIRR community, Hassan will bring back insights, resources, and best practices to help keep UMGC programs current, practical, and grounded in responsible innovation. His appointment also underscores UMGC’s growing role as a leader in accessible, workforce-ready AI education, ensuring that learners are well-prepared for the opportunities and challenges of an AI-driven world. “As an NAIRR AI Education Fellow, my goal is to bridge the gap between national AI research and the classroom,” said Hassan. “By championing responsible innovation and workforce upskilling, we are ensuring that UMGC learners are not just prepared for the AI-driven future but are ready to lead it.”

Dr. Najam Hassan reposted thisDr. Najam Hassan reposted thisThe U.S. Just Settled the “Prompt = Copyright” Debate A lot of people won’t like this. But the U.S. Copyright Office has now made its position clear in Copyright and Artificial Intelligence – Part 2: Copyrightability. Writing a prompt does not make you the author of the output. The report states: “Prompts alone do not provide sufficient human control to make users of an AI system the authors of the output… Prompts essentially function as instructions that convey unprotectible ideas.” (p.18) In plain terms: Typing a prompt (even a sophisticated one) is not the same as creating the work. The #AI system still decides how the output is actually generated. What the report clarifies A few points worth remembering: • #Copyright protects human creativity. • AI-assisted work may qualify for copyright if a human meaningfully shapes the result. • Purely AI-generated content generally cannot be copyrighted. • Each claim will be evaluated case-by-case based on human creative control. Which leads to a distinction many people ignore: AI-assisted ≠ AI-generated Editing, composing, curating, transforming; those are human creative acts. But prompting alone is closer to giving instructions than creating expression. Why this matters Generative AI is producing enormous volumes of content every day. Images. Music. Articles. Code. But if the output is generated autonomously by a machine, much of it may legally sit in the public domain. Not owned. Not protected. Not copyrightable. And every time this point comes up, some people react emotionally, as if acknowledging it somehow diminishes the value of AI tools. It doesn’t. It simply clarifies something fundamental: Copyright law protects human authorship, not machine output. That distinction is likely to shape the future of creative industries and AI platforms far more than most people realize. If you work with generative AI, the report is worth reading. Dr. Najam Hassan liked thisDr. Najam Hassan liked thisWhat is Cognitive Offloading costing you? Cognitive offloading may be one of the most important workforce issues emerging from AI-assisted work. AI helps employees move faster, produce more, summarize information, generate drafts, and reduce routine work. These benefits are real. However, the deeper question is not only what AI helps us produce. It is what we are offloading. Employees may offload memory, reasoning, writing, planning, verification, decision-making, and judgment. Some offloading is useful, especially when AI reduces repetitive or low-value work. The concern begins when employees offload the cognitive capabilities that make human expertise valuable: critical thinking, judgment, verification, ethical reasoning, and accountability. This is why measurement matters. Managers need to understand what employees are asking AI to do, how often they rely on it, whether they verify its outputs, and where human expertise may be weakening due to a lack of practice. Measuring cognitive offloading can help organizations redesign roles, workflows, training, supervision, and governance. The goal is not to stop AI use. The goal is to ensure AI supports human performance without eroding the human capacities that matter most. We need more research, better measures, and practical tools to understand what people are truly offloading to AI.

Dr. Najam Hassan reacted on thisDr. Najam Hassan reacted on thisWhen I was in 4th grade, I used to ask my mother: “What is the point of education?” She would always reply: “If you want to become a big man in life, you must get a good education.” Back then, I never understood the depth of those words. Today I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a Master’s Degree in Computer Technology and a 4.0 CGPA. For someone who once got a 2.3 CGPA in the first semester of undergrad with a backlog, this feels unreal. My parents never had the opportunity to attend college themselves, yet they gave me the kind of upbringing that shaped my entire future. Everything I have achieved is a reflection of their sacrifices, values, and belief in education. Behind that 4.0 CGPA were sacrifices people rarely see. As an international student, I had to adapt to an entirely new system, culture, and lifestyle while balancing academics, responsibilities, and constant pressure to succeed. Most weekdays, I survived on four hours of sleep while trying to build a future far away from home. A huge part of this dream became possible because of iCodeGuru. They did not just inspire me to dream bigger. They supported me at every stage of the journey and helped me believe that someone from my background could compete globally. During these two years at Eastern Illinois University, I had the opportunity to work with the Booth House web team. I am deeply thankful to Nathan Atkinson for believing in me and giving me the confidence to grow professionally. Tracy Hall, Christy Kilgore, Brian Barthold and Michael became much more than colleagues. They became family. I am also grateful to my undergraduate teachers and mentors including Raiha Tallat, Muhammad Aqib Fareed, Muhammd Zubair Shoukat , Rehana Ghulam, and FAHAD AMIN, for building the foundations that helped me reach this stage. Working with Dr. Ahmed Sabry Abou-Zaid was one of the highlights of my journey. I also want to thank my professors Abidalraman Moh'd, Hasan Fehmi Mavi, Ammar Bhutta, Md Farhadur Reza, Gail Turner-Brock, Joe Tillman, and Ibrahim Salami for their support and encouragement along the way. Special thanks to the incredible iCodeGuru team, including Zafar Shahid, PhD, Rizwan Ghaffar, Amir Khan, Khalid Khokhar, and Kaleem A., for changing lives through mentorship and community. This degree was not only about academics, technical skills, or achieving a 4.0 CGPA. More than anything, it was about the people. While knowing you will be lying in a hospital bed, following a significant cancer removal and reconstruction surgery, when the money ends. No means to get a new job until you begin to heal. All because of a horribly inhumane decision by an employer. No one deserves to go through this.

Self-driving cars promise to revolutionize the automotive industry. Besides being productive and fuel-efficient, they would be significantly safer than the human-operated cars. However, in the rare case when they do get into an accident, they can calculate and opt for the reactive measure to take based on their programming. The manufacturer, it seems, must decide the ethics that self-driving cars should follow in such scenarios. In circumstances where they must choose between the lives of the passengers and the pedestrians, some researchers have argued that the best solution is to choose for the safety of the passengers over the pedestrians. Such a strategy, they argue will make sense as cars will have better control over the passenger and, therefore, will help in faster adoption of self-driving cars.
However, this line of thinking seems simplistic at best. The author suggests a reexamination of the ethical issues while taking into account the social and technological aspects as well. -
