Meet Miguel Cesar Bautista, an Engineering Manager here at Coursera! “I enjoy breaking down the walls, opening the doors and windows, and making the connections that my team needs to get their work done,” Miguel says. If you’ve used our mobile app, you’ve likely encountered his and his team’s work. He’s also active in our internal community, lauded for making time to enjoy, engage, and contribute to our annual Make-a-Thon (MAT) event, a competitive sprint week reserved for passion projects that Courserians believe will make Coursera better for everyone. 👫 Miguel’s key skill: “The most powerful tool in this line of work is empathy. Software engineering can be an intensely isolating and cerebral endeavor, and while the number of assistive (AI) tools is increasing, the best software is still delivered and written via the alchemy of software engineering teams. Train your empathy muscles, and use them as often as possible. Be empathetic to both your end user and your peer programming buddy.” 💼 His management theory: “I don’t consider myself a good gardener, nor do I have a green thumb, but I think the analogy is sound: While I’m occasionally required to be ‘in the weeds,’ my value to my team is more holistic. I make sure the lawn is easy to maintain. If you consider individuals on my team as the plants and flowers, I have to be sensitive to which plant needs more water, and which plant needs less. Which plants need more sun, and which plants need less. I also help ensure that our lawn is maintained enough to sit next to the other well-groomed ones in the local village of Coursera’s engineering teams.” 🎨 On staying creative: “It really does feel like sorcery when I can watch my team do good work. MAT unlocks the creative force behind myriad individuals: design, sales, engineering, marketing, accounting, you name it—and lets them all just make and be and do cool things,” Miguel says. “Creativity and expressing it is what makes us ‘more human than human.’ MAT lets you access that feeling and remember it, so you can harness it in the future.” Miguel’s latest creative venture? 3D printing! “There’s several courses from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign that helped get my feet wet before plunging into the hobby,” he says. https://bit.ly/3ZKp7Ma

🚀 12 learners per minute are now enrolling in GenAI courses—up from just 1 per minute in 2023. The latest Global Skills Report signals a fundamental shift in priorities and highlights the growing pressure on organizations to incorporate AI capabilities. For learning and development professionals, this creates a dual mandate: rapidly encouraging AI skill development while ensuring thoughtful implementation that augments rather than replaces human potential. In this month's #LearningCurve, we explore: ✅ Three key workforce trends shaping global skills development ✅ How a leading telecommunications company is democratizing learning for employees ✅ An interview with Walmart's VP of Technology Strategy on leading digital transformation The data tells a clear story about where skills development is heading—and where organizations need to focus next. Meet Mehsam, who is learning from Pakistan. 🇵🇰 "From finance to analytics—Coursera helped me make the leap. “I have a bachelor’s degree and come from a finance and audit background, but my goal was always to break into the analytics industry. Thanks to Coursera—and specializations like Data Warehousing for Business Intelligence and Data Visualization with Tableau—I’m now living that dream. “I worked full-time while learning at night and dedicating full days on weekends. It wasn’t easy, but consistency was key. I created a calendar, stayed focused, and followed a simple routine: eat, sleep, learn, repeat. “My advice? Be consistent, and always keep a notebook by your side—writing helps you memorize, reflect, and truly absorb what you’re learning.”
