Leading up to Microsoft Build, Satya Nadella and Kevin Scott spoke with Semafor to discuss AI’s growing impact on the software development industry. Their focus was the paradoxical effect of its integration. In other words, how automation is actually increasing the need “for leadership with qualities that are fundamentally human.”   Three trends are shaping the developer workforce of the future:   · In addition to broadening what developers can build, AI is changing how they do it by accelerating coding, enhancing testing and debugging, optimizing deployment, and much more. · Agentic AI promises greater computing power to help people while also minimizing its presence in their daily lives. More than clean lines of code, this massive shift demands authentic human input.  · In the AI era, especially as more Frontier Firms emerge, engineers will be defined as much by their curiosity and creativity as their technical expertise. Spending time with developers at Microsoft Build this week has only reinforced how fast this transformation is happening—and how much creativity and care developers are bringing to it. We often talk about how AI can help us reclaim time in the workday. But its potential extends to something more profound. I’m proud to share that Microsoft is partnering with a number of Frontier Firms that are pioneering change in the health, climate, quantum, and energy sectors.   Our left-to-right vision for AI’s application in science strategy, from modeling through scalable tools to tangible outcomes, is helping our customers tackle global challenges for the greater good. Here are just a few examples of their cutting-edge, generative AI solutions and collaborations:    🔬 Health & Diagnostics: With AI as their assistant, clinicians are able to analyze large, unstructured datasets to more effectively detect diseases and tailor treatments for patients. PadChest-GR, for example, helps radiologists interpret images more accurately and train AI models that learn alongside scientists. 🧪 Scientific Discovery Platforms: AI-supported systems can now act as research teammates to scientists, helping accelerate research and simulate natural processes at an unprecedented scale and pace. Tools like BioEmu-1, which helps decode protein structures, and MatterGen, which supports the development of new materials, are offering new, powerful ways to investigate and innovate. 🌍 Earth & Environment: AI is helping scientists better understand our planet’s complex systems. For example, Avanade’s Intelligent Garden app uses sensors to monitor data like moisture, air quality, and growth patterns, and create health reports.   This article is an awe-inspiring reminder that the power of AI is immense. Really grateful to Victor Dey for capturing some of my thoughts in his Forbes article covering IBM's focus on addressing enterprise AI requirements. 🙏🙏 “Every hyperscaler wants to own the on-ramp, enterprises want freedom, across clouds, sovereign regions, and edge sites,” said Haseeb Budhani, CEO and co-founder, Rafay. “The winner is the platform that makes that experience feel the same everywhere: whether it’s a public cloud, on-prem, or neocloud. That’s a high bar. If IBM clears it, great. If not, multi-cloud stays a slide, not a system.” Budhani added that in AI infrastructure, economics, not hardware, will help win the race. “GPUs don’t sell themselves; experience does,” he said. It’s easy to think of AI as a time-saver that streamlines workflows and accelerates output. But the deeper opportunity lies in how it’s reshaping the nature of work itself. A new study from Harvard Business School’s Manuel Hoffmann followed more than 50,000 developers over two years, with half using GitHub Copilot. The results were striking: developers shifted away from project management and toward the core work of coding. Not because someone told them to, but because AI made it possible. With less need for coordination, people worked more autonomously. And with time saved, they reinvested in exploration—learning, experimenting, trying new things. What we’re seeing here isn’t just productivity. It’s a shift in how work gets done and who does what. Managers may spend less time supervising and more time contributing directly. Teams become flatter. Hierarchies adapt. This is just one signal of how generative AI is changing our org charts and challenging us to rethink how we structure, support, and lead our teams.
