Diane Lang shared thisSelf‑Soothing vs. Self‑Care — Why Both Matter for Your Well‑Being Supporting our mental and emotional health isn’t one‑size‑fits‑all. Two practices often mentioned together: self‑soothing and self‑care serve different purposes, yet both are essential for maintaining balance. Understanding the difference helps us choose what we need in the moment and build healthier long‑term habits. Self‑soothing refers to immediate, in‑the‑moment strategies that help calm the body and mind during stress, overwhelm, or emotional discomfort. It's when you need instant relief. These techniques don’t solve the underlying issue, but they help us regulate our nervous system so we can think more clearly. Examples of self-soothing Deep breathing to reduce tension Grounding techniques to bring attention back to the present such as the 5-4-3-2-1 Warm beverages that create comfort like chamomile tea Soothing music to shift our mood Sensory tools like soft textures or calming scents- lavender is a great scent for calming Self‑care is intentional, ongoing action that supports your physical, emotional, and mental well‑being over time. It’s less about immediate relief and more about building a foundation that prevents burnout and promotes resilience. Selfcare is preventive and done daily. Selfcare is done for you by you. Examples Making sure your basic needs are met Make sleep a priority Eat a clean diet Drink plenty of water Exercise Setting boundaries and limitations to protect your time and energy Self‑soothing helps you get through the moment. Self‑care helps you change the moments ahead

Diane Lang shared thisMay is Mental Health Awareness Month; Let’s Take Care of Ourselves and Each Other May invites us to slow down and check in with ourselves and others. Mental Health Awareness Month is not just about raising awareness it’s about building habits that help us feel grounded and supported. Stress shows up differently for everyone, but we all benefit from simple practices that create space to breathe and reset. Small Habits That Make a Big Difference Daily check‑ins - Ask yourself: How am I feeling today? What do I need? Nature time -Even a few minutes outdoors can ease tension and lift your mood. Creative outlets -Journaling, drawing, cooking, or music can help us become self-aware and process emotions. Structured breaks -Short pauses throughout the day help prevent stress from accumulating. These mindfulness breaks help us to reduce stress and be more productive and creative. Support networks- we can't heal, grieve or forgive alone. When stressed, reach out to your support system and check on those you care about. Unplugging to reduce mental overload- May is the perfect time to do a digital detox and go old school. You might like it better! Deep breathing to reset your nervous system- just breathe. You can try box breathing: inhale through your nose for 4, hold for 4, exhale through your mouth for 4, pause for 4 and repeat. Healthy boundaries — Saying no when needed, asking for help, selfcare, all help prevent burnout. #mentalhealth #selfcare #boundaries #mindfulness

Diane Lang shared thisThis Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s normalize something important: you can be strong, successful, and still need ways to cope. We all have stress. Life moves fast, and busy people often forget to pause. As a Type A personality, these coping strategies have really helped. Mindful pauses — A moment of awareness can shift your entire day. Take some time to just sit and breathe. Body scans — Notice tension before it becomes burnout. Where do you hold stress on your body? Do a check-in. When you feel it, it's an alarm going off to pause. Support check‑in — A quick conversation with someone you trust can lighten the load. Label - We can feel better just by labeling what we feel. Take a quick 5-minute walk #mindfulness #copingskills #mentalhealth #pause #reboot #refuel

Diane Lang shared thisThe most effective stress‑relief tools are the ones that interrupt your mental autopilot. These tools do that by engaging your senses, your creativity, or your curiosity in unexpected ways. A sensory toolkit is a small collection of items that stimulate different senses: a textured stone, essential oils/scented candles, a piece of dark chocolate (my favorite), a smooth coin, or a soft blanket It works because sensory input hijacks your stress response and pulls you back into the present moment. Mixing hot/cold together such as holding something warm in one hand and something cool in the other can regulate your nervous system surprisingly fast like a warm mug + a chilled spoon. Puzzles- jigsaw puzzles or pocket‑sized brain teasers give your mind a quick, satisfying challenge. You can do a little at a time or buy a tiny jigsaw puzzle. They’re perfect for breaking a stress spiral. Label your thoughts without trying to fix them - instead of fighting your thoughts, label them: worry, planning, fear, memory, judgment. This simple act reduces their emotional charge and helps you detach. No judgment just label. Just a few more tools for your emotional toolbox. #emotionalwellness #emotionalhealth #mentalhealth #copingskills #emotionaltoolbox

Diane Lang shared thisCoping skills are tools that help you tolerate, reduce, and manage stressful situations. When you’re able to regulate your stress or anxiety, you tend to feel better both physically and emotionally and it often improves how well you function in daily life. A helpful question to ask yourself when you’re feeling overwhelmed is: “Do I need to change the situation, or do I need to cope with the situation as it is?” Problem‑focused coping is useful when something in your environment needs to change. This might mean removing or reducing a source of stress. For example, if you’re in an unhealthy relationship, the most effective way to reduce anxiety or sadness may be to end the relationship. If ending it isn’t possible, setting boundaries and limits can help protect your well‑being. Emotion‑focused coping is helpful when the situation itself can’t be changed or when you’re not ready to change it. In these cases, the goal is to care for your emotional experience. For example, when grieving a loss, you can’t change the circumstance, but you can support yourself through healthy emotional processing. You can find support and start the grieving process. Remember, work on what you can control not what you can't. It’s important to stay aware of unhealthy coping strategies, such as relying on substances, using food for comfort, or overspending to escape feelings. Instead, aim to build healthy coping skills, including setting boundaries, leaning on supportive people, practicing self‑care, meeting your basic needs, and using mindfulness or grounding techniques. #copingskills #mentalhealth #emotionalhealth #stressmanagement #destress #mindfulness #selfcare

But "the body keeps the score," and over time shows cracks. Then, often, they listen to advice that isn't fully integrated, which causes more confusion and turmoil. I see this all the time. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” The Bible reveals that every tree God made in the garden was already pleasant to the eye and good for food. Genesis 2:9 explains, “And out of the ground made the Lord God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” However, when the devil was deceiving Eve, he introduced a perspective that God had not mentioned. He opened her eyes to the idea that the tree was not only good for food and pleasant to the eyes, but also desirable to make one wise. It was this specific vision, an invitation to wisdom, that led to the fall of man. This temptation did not end in Eden. Even today, the enemy still attempts to open the eyes of men to certain "wisdoms." The Bible in James 3:15 categorizes this as a wisdom that does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic. In these times, where the realities of the spirit realm are daily being unveiled and portals have been opened to allow us access to divine liberties, a higher level of discernment is required. Why? Because there are ideas and strategies that present themselves in the form of wisdom but are not inspired by God. There are "cunning" paths that seem enlightened but are rooted in the wisdom of devils. You must be able to tell the difference. Godly wisdom is pure, peaceable, and leads to life; demonic wisdom is rooted in independence from God and leads to destruction. James 3:13-17; 2 Corinthians 11:14 *GOLDEN NUGGET* Godly wisdom is pure, peaceable, and leads to life; demonic wisdom is rooted in independence from God and leads to destruction. *PRAYER* Loving Father, I thank You for the gift of Your Spirit who leads me into all truth. I receive a heightened sense of discernment. My eyes are open to see beyond the surface and my heart is quick to perceive the source of every instruction. I am led by the pure wisdom of God that builds and preserves. In Jesus’ name, Amen https://nevelynhope.org/

New report from Sunlight Policy Center of New Jersey on Sean Spiller and the New Jersey Education Association (NJEA)'s use of dues to fund his campaign: "Leadership knew very well that teachers would not support Spiller as a candidate for governor. That's why they secretly planned to -- and then did -- out-source Spiller's campaign to dark-money Super PACs that could spend unlimited amounts of money and be covertly funded by the $130 million pool of regular dues. Leadership also knew that teachers would not approve the use of $45 million of their dues -- the most money ever spent on a gubernatorial primary candidate in New Jersey history -- to support a candidate they did not support. So leadership hid the truth from their own members."

Creative therapies are not extras in special education. They are essential tools that help students grow in ways traditional academics alone cannot reach. At Alpha School in Jackson, NJ, music and art therapy are integrated into a whole-student approach that includes academic instruction, occupational and speech therapy, and life skills training. Through activities like instrumental improvisation, songwriting, painting, and sculpture, students build communication skills, emotional regulation, and self-confidence. 📊 6,709 children. 👥 15,536 people trained. 💙 1 goal: To pioneer the most promising, leading-edge ways that help victims of child abuse receive the best possible care. In 2024, Massachusetts’ 12 Children’s Advocacy Centers (CACs) served more than 6,700 children, each one receiving a coordinated, trauma-informed response to abuse. CACs serve as a child-friendly setting where professionals from law enforcement, child protective services, prosecution, mental health, and medical services can meet and conduct a coordinated response to child abuse. The collaboration of these agents serving child victims and their families through the CAC model reduces the risk of further trauma and ensures easy access to services, including those of the legal, medical, mental health and criminal justice systems. This state-of-the-art model provides the best response for child victims by reducing the risk for further trauma. Child victims of sexual assault are at greater risk for anxiety, depression, suicide, and serious health problems. The early intervention CAC model affords children a critical connection to much needed services so that they can begin to heal and recover. Our coalition also trained 15,536 professionals and community members across the state to identify and respond to child abuse. This leads to building a more informed, safer Massachusetts. 📍 Learn more at buff.ly/v4L3E6f #ChildAdvocacy #TraumaInformedCare #PublicHealth #CACsWork #Massachusetts #NonprofitLeadership #SocialImpact #ChildWelfare #ProtectKids #HealingHopeJustice

Jason Kornwitz writes: Ed-Dee Williams, MSW, PhD, an assistant professor at the Boston College School of Social Work, has received a two-year, $280,000 grant from The National Institutes of Health to evaluate the efficacy of a virtual training program that makes it easier for Black youth with #autism to talk about depression. His intervention, called “Asking for Help” and created with the software company SIMmersion, uses video and speech recognition to simulate conversations with teachers. Every exchange is unique, giving them repeated opportunities to practice their conversational skills until they feel ready to share their experiences with supportive adults. The app addresses a thorny problem facing Black #teens today: Although they are at higher risk for depression than their white counterparts, they are less likely to receive treatment for the condition. What’s more, nearly 25 percent of Black #autistic youth have significant issues with conversation, language, and social skills—14 percent higher than white autistic youth. The NIH grant will allow Williams and his team to revamp the program’s content and interface. They plan to replace text with videos featuring characters explaining material in more culturally relevant language; redesign the on-screen coach, who guides users through the program, as a younger Black woman who feels more like a peer; and reformat the app for tablets and phones to better match how many #neurodivergent youth use technology. The funding will also support in-person and virtual testing with youth, parents, and community partners, focusing on whether it improves users’ understanding of depression, reduces stigma, and encourages help-seeking behaviors. Williams hopes to finalize the app for public release by 2027, making it commercially available to schools, therapists, and parents. “The goal is for the app to support positive mental health conversations for Black autistic youth,” Williams says. “When they get done using it, I want them to feel more comfortable talking about depression, have a better understanding of depression, and be more inclined to talk about their symptoms.” Read the full story at https://lnkd.in/gijGBge6 . #TeenMentalHealth #intersectionality #DepressionHelp #AutismSupport #BlackAutisticYouth #BlackYouth #SocialWorkResearch Maria Davis-Pierre ,LMHC LaRita Smith Kelvin Smith, Ph.D. Dr. KD Harris Marty Schultz #MentalHealthApps

A quick local reminder for Care Partners in Massachusetts: you don’t have to do this alone, and you shouldn’t have to hunt for support in a crisis. 💙📍 A few good starting points for community dementia resources are your local Council on Aging or senior center, your public library (many host caregiver groups), the Alzheimer’s Association, and your Area Agency on Aging. If you’re working with an Aging Professional, ask them for a short list of trusted, local programs that fit your family’s needs and your person’s stage of dementia. #Boston #DementiaResources #AgingProfessionals

“It starts with a cookie, but the real goal is to start conversations about Deaf culture and the importance of learning ASL.” - Elena Picano At Southern Connecticut State University, the American Sign Language Club turned their fall bake sale into something more than a fundraiser. For club president Elena Picano, baking homemade cookies and pastries was about creating a space where people could connect and learn. “We wanted something accessible and personal. Homemade goods help bring people in,” she said. Vice president Alex Cruz agreed that keeping it hands on was key. “Fundraisers usually partner with outside companies,” Cruz said. “But by keeping it here, made by our members, it becomes collaborative. People feel like they’re part of something, not just supporting it.” Cruz, who is autistic, shared that ASL has been deeply personal for her. “ASL helped me communicate when words didn’t. Now, I want others to learn and feel empowered too.” Founded in 2020, the ASL Club now meets weekly to practice sign language, review themes like colors and numbers, and discuss Deaf history and culture. “You don’t need any background at all,” Cruz said. “We understand what it’s like to be a beginner. We’re patient and encouraging.” For Picano, the goal is simple. “I want people to recognize the people behind the language. Not just learn signs, but understand Deaf experiences, history, and resilience.” At Caption Consulting, with services across the US, UK, and Canada, we believe inclusion starts with connection. Sometimes it begins with a small gesture, or even a cookie, that brings people closer to understanding Deaf culture and community. https://lnkd.in/grqKA5sw #ASL #DeafCulture #Accessibility #Inclusion #RepresentationMatters #CaptionConsulting #SouthernConnecticutStateUniversity #DeafCommunity

There’s a hopeful sign for Massachusetts families: confirmed cases of child abuse and neglect dropped by 7% over the past year. Advocates say this progress may reflect something powerful — more families are getting the support they need before reaching a crisis point. Child abuse doesn’t just impact a child in the moment — it can cause lifelong harm, including brain injury and lasting effects on development, health, and well-being. At the State House this week, The Children’s Trust marked Child Abuse Prevention Month with its annual display of children’s shoes on the Grand Staircase. Each pair represents a child affected daily. This year, seven fewer pairs were needed. It’s progress — but the message is clear: there’s still more to do. Prevention means investing in: Stable housing Mental health support Food security Economic stability Because protecting children isn’t the job of one program — it takes all of us.

𝐈𝐭'𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟: Aligning Incentives, Core Values and 3rd party oversight to prevent abuse and neglect in NJ autism group homes. As a parent navigating residential supports in New Jersey, the safety of your child depends most on the people caring for them. Recent reporting by https://lnkd.in/edFWWph3 found nearly 𝟓𝟎 𝐝𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐬 𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝟐𝟎𝟏𝟑 of vulnerable adults in New Jersey group homes that raised serious questions about care and supervision. https://lnkd.in/ezXFRkeA Many of the homes serving individuals with autism struggled with insufficient staffing, inadequate training, and lack of basic care. Some residents were found to have died alone, or without timely medical intervention. To protect your child, look at three key areas: 𝟏. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐟𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐬 & 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲. Ask: What is the turnover rate? Are direct support professionals paid well, trained regularly, and supported with career pathways? When staffing is unstable, continuity of care suffers, raising risk. 𝟐. 𝐂𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐯𝐚𝐥𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐡𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 & 𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞. Inquire how providers screen for respect, autonomy, and safety during hiring. Are staff coached in person-centered planning, positive behavior supports, and trauma-informed care? Values matter at every shift. 𝟑. 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐮𝐬𝐭 𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 & 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲. In New Jersey, oversight falls short. Investigations into deaths often take months and corrective actions are rarely public. Ask for accreditation (e.g., CARF International), independent audits, unannounced visits, and family-accessible incident logs. If a provider can’t answer your questions clearly, or resists giving written policies, treat it as a red flag. Your child deserves more than “just enough” care. They deserve an environment grounded in dignity, stability, and accountability. You as a parent are the strongest advocate they have. Use your voice, inspect the systems, and insist on the safest match possible.
