I enjoyed this UMass Global article that clearly explains what a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT) is and how these clinicians support mental health and relational wellness. An LMFT is a trained therapist who works with individuals, couples, and families to help them navigate life challenges, improve communication, and strengthen relationships. The article breaks down the steps to becoming an LMFT, including the required education, supervised clinical hours, and licensing process. It also highlights the core skills LMFTs use in practice, including systems thinking, empathy, behavioral observation, and culturally responsive care. If you are exploring careers in mental health or considering graduate degrees that prepare you for clinical practice, this piece gives a helpful overview of what an LMFT does and the impact these professionals have on the lives they serve. 📖 Explore the full article here: https://lnkd.in/ggCAuzSi #LMFT #MentalHealthCareers #AdultLearners

New Resource: I had an incredible opportunity to be asked by David L. Wodrich, PhD, ABPP, CEO of Clinic-School Press, to use, review, and provide feedback on a new decision-making protocol titled STEPS. The authors have created a quick and useful tool to encourage a comprehensive review of cases. There are numerous potential uses. University instructors would find this helpful when teaching case conceptualizations, supervisors working with students, and early-career practitioners to deconstruct challenging scenarios and when needing a framework for organizing facts to present a case. The protocol is easy to navigate. The categories are familiar, yet organized in a way that allows for deeper thinking and ease of reshuffling prioritized facts backed by evidence. I become a #1 fan and promote bodies of work when I see the research on when, how, and why something works, and when I witness profound changes. This is about data-informed priorities. #choosewisely
Twenty years ago, Patterns of Learning Disorders: Working Systematically from Assessment to Intervention was published by Guilford Press. Hard to believe it has been that long. At the time, Ara Schmitt was still a practicing school psychologist, and Marsha Spencer was a PhD student at Arizona State University—and also my graduate assistant. Marsha had an exceptional talent for locating resources, creating clear figures, and helping navigate more than a few spirited discussions between Ara and me. Today, Ara and Marsha—along with Megan Aros—are making important contributions of their own. The three of them are creating STEPS for my publishing company, Clinic‑School Press, LLC. STEPS is designed to support accuracy, consistency, and error‑prevention in case formulation. I like to think that there are minute echoes of our book from 20 years ago in STEPS. If you’re interested in tools that help school psychologists and child clinical psychologists, make better, more defensible decisions, I invite you to learn more about STEPS and Clinic‑School Press by visiting our website and signing up to our mailing list. 🔗 Clinic‑School Press: https://lnkd.in/gjwr2guX #SchoolPsychology #PsychoeducationalAssessment #LearningDisorders #SpecialEducation #CaseFormulation #AssessmentTools #EducationalPsychology #ClinicSchoolPress #STEPS #ProfessionalPractice #K12Education

I’ve been working behind the scenes on something new for clinicians. I’m developing a P.A.T.H. Model™ Foundations Training designed specifically for therapists who want the core framework in a clear, practical, self-paced format. This will be a fully asynchronous, lower-cost entry point into the model. Not a replacement for advanced training, but a strong starting place for clinicians who want to understand the structure before going deeper. The Foundations Training focuses on: • The clinical architecture of Presence, Alignment, Truth, and Healing • How the model integrates neuroscience, hope, and spiritually informed practice • Practical session application and clinical decision-making • Ethical scope and professional boundaries • Reducing mental health stigma when working with faith-based clients No fluff. Just usable clinical training grounded in real practice. More details coming soon. #PATHModel #ClinicalTraining #SocialWork #Therapists #FaithAndMentalHealth #TraumaInformedCare

At CMBA, we believe that the right environment can be a catalyst for specialized care. The University of Iowa’s Scanlan Center for School Mental Health is a prime example of this in action. A recent feature highlights the center’s growing role in providing eating disorder services—a field that requires intense interdisciplinary collaboration. We designed the Scanlan Center to facilitate exactly this kind of teamwork, creating a space where clinical expertise and patient comfort meet. As Taylor Ford notes, the need for specialized treatment in Iowa is significant. We are proud to have partnered with the UI College of Education to design a facility that helps meet that need for students, staff, and parents across the state. Anger in boys and men: More than just “breaking point.” Anger is often the visible tip of deeper emotional stress in boys, adolescents, and adult men, yet it’s frequently misunderstood or overlooked in clinical practice. At Innerspace Counseling, our new blog explores: 🔹 How socialization can shape emotional expression in males 🔹 When anger signals underlying depression, anxiety, trauma, or stress 🔹 Developmental differences in anger expression 🔹 Evidence-based strategies we use in treatment (CBT, emotion regulation skills, IOP/PHP program approaches) 🔹 Red flags vs. typical frustration patterns in clients Understanding these patterns strengthens our ability to: ✔️ Recognize trauma-linked anger ✔️ Differentiate irritability from primary mood symptoms ✔️ Support boys, teens, and adult men with tailored interventions 🔗 Read the full article linked in the comments to deepen your clinical perspective and discover practical tools for your practice. Let’s keep advancing trauma-informed and developmentally sensitive care, especially for populations where emotional expression can be socially constrained. #MentalHealthProfessionals #ClinicalPsychology #Counseling #TherapyInsights #ChildAndAdolescentMentalHealth #MenAndAnger #MentalHealthAwareness #InnerspaceCounseling

Navigating professional boundaries requires constant adaptation based on the environment. In a federal prison setting, the training emphasizes a stark separation: officer first, psychologist second. Maintaining distance, even refraining from sharing first names or personal details like family photos or wedding rings, is crucial for institutional safety and is considered a risk to disclose. Contrast this with long-term care facilities, where clinicians enter a resident's personal space—their room, filled with family photos and personal mementos. Here, residents often seek connection and inquire about the clinician's personal life. The clinician must adapt to this more personal interaction. Even in outpatient settings, the approach to self-disclosure varies. Each professional must assess their comfort level, determine what is appropriate for the specific setting, and consider what the patient needs. The ability to adapt professional boundaries is key to effective practice across diverse clinical environments.
