It’s time to be more honest about what “success” actually looks like in publishing. Because for most authors, book sales alone are never the full story. The data makes that clear. ➥ According to the Business Book ROI Study, median sales land around 4,600 copies for traditionally published books, about 1,600 for hybrid titles, and roughly 700 for self-published books. ➥ Zoom out further, and the picture sharpens: data cited by The New York Times shows that roughly 96% of books sell fewer than 1,000 copies, and only about 2% sell more than 5,000. Those numbers aren’t here to scare you; they’re just here to tell the truth. If success is defined only by how many copies move in a short launch window, the math can feel discouraging fast. But that framing misses what’s actually happening, especially for business, leadership, and nonfiction authors. A book is meant to work over time, not just be a one-week celebration event. For example:  • A book that sells steadily can outperform one that spikes and disappears. • A book that stays relevant can keep opening doors months or years after launch. • A book that clearly positions your expertise can drive speaking, consulting, partnerships, and inbound opportunities that far outweigh direct sales revenue. This is why the most successful authors I work with don’t obsess over unit counts in isolation. They pay attention to momentum, consistency, and whether their book is quietly doing its job in the background. So the more useful question isn’t “How many copies did I sell?” It’s “What is this book helping me build?” ➥ A simple place to start is by asking yourself what you want your book to unlock beyond sales.  Conversations? Business leads? Invitations to speak? Partnerships? Your content is doing exactly what you trained it to do. And that’s why your inbound is unstable. You trained it to: → explain → reassure → sound helpful So people read you. Agree with you. Scroll past you. Nothing breaks. Nothing escalates. Nothing forces a decision. Recognition feels like progress. It isn’t. Recognition without intent creates passive trust. Passive trust doesn’t book calls. This is why: → effort compounds → visibility grows → pipeline stays unpredictable Not because your content is bad.
