THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW and likely do... but you may need a reminder. 'Know-Like-Trust' will always be a key focus in establishing valuable business relationships on this platform. You are not just collecting a big number of Connections, you are working and being visible on a global platform to build a viable network. 1. Establish yourself as a trusted connection by verifying your ID. Giving LinkedIn your drivers license or Passport does not mean you're heading down a black hole of potential hackers. And it IS a requirement of the process, and when we look at profiles, we look for the 'checkmark'. Do what you'd like with this advice, but when we see profiles without that verification, it adds a bit of doubt to our review process and may cause an 'ignore' keystroke rather than hitting 'accept. 2. Be real! Don't load your About narrative with boasting. Prove it. Get Recommendations to back up your claims of expertise. Use the Honors & Awards section - available under Add Section along with a dozen other ways to add content. Don't skip Volunteering, either, past OR present - that speaks volumes about your character. Who has time to volunteer? No one! When you MAKE time for it, that says something about your willingness to dedicate time to a mission that's important to you. 3. Job seekers - If you're posting with a 'generic ask' for help leading to a job that's right for you, please stop! YES, you want your network's help, but TELL US what you're after. Be specific, never assume that because you are known to someone that they know what you're seeking. 4. Update your profile. Has it been a while? Review your Headline & About section. Make sure the keywords you're displaying are current ones of interest to the type of members you want to attract to your profile. Inbound marketing on this platform is dependent on your keywords and where you use them. (In addition to the Activity you do on LinkedIn.) Want more? After a networking event, of any kind, it's important to take a few steps to keep the momentum going. Meeting professionals IRL (in real life) is the best way to start relationship building. A gathering - whether locally with an area organization, or at a business seminar, or annual conference - offers a quick way to meet MANY people in a single setting. What to do next * Follow up within a few days - text, email, or phone call * Connect on LinkedIn (of course!) * Mention/share any resources discussed * Respond with any promises made * Use photos taken at the event and turn them into posts The important thing is not to wait too long to take these actions. You are on your way to developing relationships for the value that may exist between you.
