Providing the right support at the right time can make all the difference for someone’s mental health. That’s why we’re updating Gemini to be more people-centered—helping users connect with the right information, resources, and human support at the right time. Dr. Megan Jones Bell shares more on our approach to mental health in the age of AI ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/gBhZtfrB
As AI tools improve and more people use them as part of their daily lives, we believe that responsible AI can play a positive role for people’s mental well-being. Today, we are sharing an update on our mental health work – grounded in research and clinical best practices. Our approach is rooted in: 1️⃣ Prioritising human connection: We want Gemini to connect people to real-world experts when they need support 2️⃣ Training Gemini: Training our Gemini to avoid validating harmful behaviors and provide helpful, clinically backed information 3️⃣ Protecting younger users: Specific protections to provide the most helpful responses, and avoid harmful topics when using Gemini We are also delivering $30M in Google.org funding to help global mental health hotlines scale their capacity to provide support for people in crisis. Laurie Richardson and I explain more on how responsible AI can play a constructive role in providing information and resources – while connecting people with human support at the right time. Japan is projected to face a shortage of nearly 600,000 elderly care workers by 2040. Caregivers say their biggest hurdle isn’t care itself. It’s documentation, which can take up to 20% of their time and drive turnover. To help caregivers reclaim this time, we turned to Gems in the Gemini app. Gems are saved, specialized instructions that customize Gemini for specific tasks — so it understands your needs every time you use it. Supporting caregivers is only half the equation. We also need to meet patients where they are with tools that fit into everyday life. From #TheCheckUp: Joëlle Barral shares how Gemini is making it possible: https://goo.gle/41U3p8Q

Health-related videos on YouTube have now crossed 1 trillion views globally. Nearly half of the world’s healthcare workers already turn to YouTube for information. At #TheCheckUp, Dr. Garth Graham, Global Head of YouTube Health, shared how we’re using AI tools to transform passive watching into active learning, helping improve health literacy for everyone, everywhere. On eligible health videos, the “Ask” button lets viewers turn watching into an interactive conversation with an AI tool based on the video’s content. We’re also partnering with health organizations worldwide to bring conversational AI to more learners. • In India, we’re partnering with the College of Nursing at the All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) to bring professional nursing courses to YouTube with conversational AI to support just-in-time learning for students and practicing nurses. • We’re also working with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) to use Conversational AI tools to augment and scale just-in-time learning for first responders. From students, to nurses, to first responders, we are one step closer to meeting every learner where they are. Watch The Check Up keynote here: https://lnkd.in/gRhaAN64

At The Check Up, Yossi Matias shared highlights from Google Research’s latest work in health — from AMIE and Google Earth AI in healthcare to new progress in bringing research into real-world impact. Read the highlights ⬇️
The Check Up event this week, we shared how we’re entering a new era of innovation in scientific and clinical research for health. AI can make a big difference in helping billions of people live longer, healthier lives. From our research on multi-agent systems to conversational AI to open weight models, the potential of AI in healthcare is tremendous. Key highlights of progress in research and its real-world impact: ✨ Empower the global community We offer a suite of open-weight medical models as a robust starting point for health developers everywhere. That includes MedGemma, which has been downloaded 3 million times, enabling thousands of impactful use cases globally. ✨ AI as a Decoder for Health Building on our seminal 2016 research paper, our diabetic retinopathy model was now used in over 1 million screenings across India, Thailand, and Australia through our strategic partners. We are also leveraging LLMs through our Personal Health Agent (PHA) research exploring how multimodal models could analyze sleep patterns and activity metrics from wearables to provide personalized coaching and insights. ✨ AI as a Collaborator for Clinicians New research published in Nature Cancer demonstrates how our AI system identified 25% of "interval" breast cancers previously missed by traditional screenings, and is capable of reducing 40% of radiologist workloads. Furthermore, our conversational AI system, AMIE, is moving into prospective, real-world validation with a first-of-its-kind nationwide study alongside Included Health. ✨ AI as a Navigator for Public Health We are harnessing Google Earth AI, a collection of geospatial models and datasets for planetary intelligence. Earth AI can shift public health from reactive response to proactive, to help predict outbreaks, identify local vulnerabilities, and deliver proactive care, where it is needed most. Earth AI is already in use by partners. ✨ AI as an Accelerator for Scientific Discovery Our research on the Co-Scientist multi-agent system along with Gemini Deep Think, demonstrate how valuable AI collaborators can be for scientists. As we advance our breakthrough research, we continue to adhere to the highest standards of scientific rigor, and to bring our research from the lab to clinical settings responsibly, working closely with patients, medical professionals, public officials, researchers and scientists. I am incredibly excited about the opportunities to realize the benefits of AI to help everyone around the world enjoy longer, healthier lives.
