Grateful for the opportunity to connect with leaders from across the University of Michigan’s career services network: Heather Byrne, Louise E. Jackson, Joslyn Johnson, Joanna Kroll, and Amber Strickland M.A., LPC. Our conversation reinforced a truth I often come back to: 𝘍𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘥𝘰𝘦𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘣𝘢𝘴𝘪𝘤, 𝘪𝘵 𝘮𝘦𝘢𝘯𝘴 𝘦𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘢𝘭. Especially in today’s fast-changing world of work, sustained career growth requires foundational skills like:  ✔️ Learning agility ✔️ Reading the room ✔️ Articulating and demonstrating value ✔️ Building authentic relationships, and  ✔️ Navigating change with confidence We also explored the accelerating impact of AI on the workforce. While tech continues to evolve, the advantage still lies with those who are 𝐜𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬, 𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞, and 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. AI doesn’t diminish the value of human skills, it heightens the need for them. What stood out most was our shared commitment to preparing students and alumni 𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘫𝘶𝘴𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘪𝘳 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘫𝘰𝘣, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨 𝘴𝘶𝘤𝘤𝘦𝘴𝘴. Workforce Pell: A Game-Changer for Central Ohio Big changes are coming to the way we think about access to education and career pathways. With the newly signed Workforce Pell Grant expansion, Central Ohio is poised to benefit in a big way. Starting in 2026, students enrolled in short-term, high-quality workforce programs will be eligible for federal Pell Grants—even if they already hold a bachelor’s degree. That means more people will have access to training for in-demand careers in healthcare, biotech, manufacturing, IT, and beyond—without the financial burden that has traditionally been a barrier. This is a huge win for working adults, career changers, and employers who are desperate for skilled talent. At Columbus State and beyond, this unlocks a new level of alignment between education and economic development. It also reinforces something we've always known: college doesn’t always look like a four-year degree—and it shouldn’t have to. Workforce Pell is more than a policy change—it’s a catalyst for mobility, equity, and regional growth. Since Central Michigan University’s founding in 1892, the university has been a leader in preparing the teachers of tomorrow. Now, thanks to funding from the Go Grants initiative, CMU hopes to build on its history of outreach to PK-12 schools through an innovative feasibility study. Led by Troy Hicks, interim associate dean of the CMU College of Education and Human Services, the college is exploring the possibility of creating an office to support outreach efforts that would serve as a hub to provide youth programs, professional development and evaluation services to PK-12 partners across the state. “This is about more than offering ‘training,’” Hicks said. “It’s about building a collaborative network, all across Michigan, that supports educators, many of whom are our alumni.
