Infineon Technologies and Continental Device India Pvt. Ltd. CDIL Partner to Boost India’s Power Semiconductor Industry Infineon Technologies has signed its first India-based agreement with CDIL Semiconductors to supply silicon wafers for domestic power chip manufacturing. Under this partnership, Infineon will provide bare semiconductor wafers, which CDIL will process, assemble, and package into power chipsets for applications in solar technology, automotive power solutions, inverters, and renewable energy. Infineon’s Asia Pacific President and MD, CS Chua, emphasized the importance of local partnerships, stating, “India is a special and very large market where we need partners like CDIL who understand the local requirement.” CDIL Chairman Pankaj Gulati highlighted the long-term impact: "By integrating Infineon’s world-class wafer technology with CDIL’s advanced OSAT capabilities, we are setting new benchmarks in innovation and localization." India’s innovation journey needs more than bold funding- it needs strategic execution. The ₹1 lakh crore RDI scheme is a landmark initiative, but its true impact will depend on how we bridge the gap between invention and adoption. Global lessons, especially from China, show that success comes from targeted sectoral focus, domestic market creation, and a commitment to scaling proven technologies.   India must support not just R&D, but also demand creation through purchase commitments, milestone-based funding, and competitive scaling. Only then can we build a product-driven economy and move closer to our vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.   These ideas are explored in a recent CNBC-TV18 article I co-authored with Mahesh Deodhar, Research Fellow at the Centre for Sustainable Energy and Mobility, Pune International Centre. India Electronics and Semiconductor Association wants the Centre to incentivise buyers to purchase India-made chips, arguing demand-side pull may now be the real bottleneck as the $10B first phase of the India Semiconductor Mission wraps up. With fabs, OSATs and ATMPs from players like Micron, Tata Electronics, Foxconn coming up, the missing piece is predictable domestic demand. SEMICON India 2025 took place at Yashobhoomi (IICC), New Delhi, from Sept 2–4, themed “Building the Next Semiconductor Powerhouse”, scaling up significantly from prior years. The 2025 fair hosted 300+ companies from 18 countries, over 20,000 participants, delegates from 48 countries, 1,275 booths—including global CXOs—SEMICON India 2025 became the largest such event in South Asia. SEMICON India is India’s flagship semiconductor trade fair and conference series, jointly organized by the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) under MeitY and SEMI, a global industry association in microelectronics. It has quickly emerged as a pivotal platform for uniting industry, policymakers, academia, startups, and investors to foster collaboration across the semiconductor and electronics value chain. The event marked the unveiling of India’s first fully indigenous 32-bit microprocessor, “Vikram”, created by VSSC and ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory.✨ PM Modi emphasized that "chips are the ‘digital diamonds’ of the 21st century", reinforcing India’s vision of strategic self-reliance (Atmanirbhar Bharat) in critical technologies.

BENCHMARKING is Critical in Product Development: A Case from the Automotive Industry 1. Benchmarking is the first step towards excellence. To develop a world-class product, you must first understand what “world-class” looks like. 2. China’s automotive rise is no accident. In the 2000s, Chinese automakers began aggressively benchmarking luxury brands like Audi, BMW, and Benz (ABB) — not just in design, but in powertrain, safety, NVH (noise, vibration, harshness), and comfort. 3. Geely is a prime example. From a local player to global brand owner (e.g. Volvo, Lotus, Smart), Geely’s growth was driven by intense benchmarking of top-tier brands. 4. ABB = Gold standard. ABB brands are synonymous with engineering precision, performance, and luxury. Geely didn’t aim to copy cheaper models — they benchmarked up, not sideways. 5. Result: China’s auto exports exploded. In 2023, China surpassed Japan as the world’s No. 1 car exporter, shipping over 5 million vehicles, thanks in part to higher-quality cars. 6. Improving the benchmark, not just copying. Chinese brands not only duplicated features from ABB models — they added localized innovation, tech, and cost efficiency. 7. Product evolution > replication. Benchmarking isn’t about cloning — it’s about understanding what works and making it better, faster, and more relevant to your market. 8. Geely’s new engines match or beat ABB specs. For instance, the Geely BHE15-EFZ 1.5L turbo engine delivers 133 kW and 290 Nm torque, rivaling BMW’s 1.5L TwinPower engines. 9. Interior comfort and tech now competitive. Geely’s high-end models offer AI voice assistants, AR-HUD, and advanced driver-assist systems that rival German offerings — often at half the price. 10. Compare with P1 benchmarking P2 If P1 benchmarks P2, they risk matching just similar quality, since both operate within similar price and tech segments. 11. Outcome of lateral benchmarking = parity, not superiority. Without benchmarking against higher-tier products, there’s little opportunity to leapfrog or disrupt the market. 12. Benchmarking sets the ceiling of your ambition. You only improve what you measure — and you only reach as high as your reference point allows. 13. Industry-wide proof: Benchmarking precedes breakthrough. Samsung benchmarked Apple. BYD benchmarked Tesla. Toyota benchmarked GM in the 1970s. All are now global leaders. 14. Key principle: Receive → Duplicate → Improve. Don’t reinvent unnecessarily. Learn from the best, duplicate the core, and improve with your own innovation DNA. 15. In conclusion: Benchmarking is not optional, it’s strategic. Whether in automotive, electronics, or AI — your product’s future starts with choosing the right benchmark.
