Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisToday is Family Day! I hope you are pressing “pause” on work and spending the day with those who you love most. There were many years when I prioritized work over everything else. The truth is “everything else” is the truly important stuff. This long weekend we have enjoyed our time off and while we miss our kids who live in other places, we can’t wait to be back together in just a few short weeks. From my family to yours, Happy Family Day! #humanresources #executivecoaching #coaching

Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisExcellent post Doug Dennerline! “If the head of HR reports to anyone but the CEO, don’t work there.”Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisIf the head of HR reports to anyone but the CEO, don’t work there. I’ve been saying this for years: If HR reports to Finance, Legal, or Operations, it’s a red flag. Here’s why. When the CEO delegates HR upward instead of partnering directly, it tells you everything about how that company views its people. They see HR as an administrative cost — not a business driver. As a shield for “people problems” — not a strategic lever for performance. The best CEOs I know treat their CHRO like a true partner. They discuss talent the same way they discuss customers, product, and profit. Because they understand that performance starts — and ends — with people. If your HR leader doesn’t have the CEO’s ear, they can’t shape the culture, build accountability, or align performance to strategy. That’s why I’ll always believe that a CEO who hides HR under another function is creating risk and not managing it. We see the difference daily at Betterworks. When HR and business leaders partner directly, real-time performance enablement becomes a competitive advantage — not an HR project.

Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisToday is the Annual Journey for Janice ride for Muscular Dystrophy Canada (MDC). The Journey for Janice cycling event was started by Jordan Freedman, P.Eng., PMP, PE and his good friend Hartley Ruch in honour of Jordan’s late Mom, Janice Freedman. 2017 marked the first annual group ride, and we have since expanded to events in Vancouver and Boston. This year will be our 9th annual event, and to date we have raised over $200,000! Come out and cheer on our riders or make a donation to a true community event! This is a ride powered by love. Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisThe following thoughtful piece by Lauren Landry delves into the significance of Emotional Intelligence in Leadership. Emotional Intelligence (EI) centers around the notion that to inspire others, one must first cultivate self-awareness and self-management. It involves grasping and regulating one's emotions while also perceiving and influencing the emotions of those in one's sphere. The essence of Emotional Intelligence lies in four fundamental competences: Self Awareness, Self-Management, Social Awareness, and Relationship Management. These competencies form the bedrock of EI understanding. Effective leaders shape the culture of their organizations. The absence of emotional intelligence in leadership can lead to decreased employee engagement and heightened turnover rates. Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisWhether you are a leader, a coach or teacher, you have an opportunity to ensure that the people in front of you feel seen, heard and understood. I remember hearing the story of a gentleman who in speaking to his executive sponsor, and sharing his concerns about the business was met with a gaze, and a comment, “Are you finished ranting now?” For me, that was the ultimate illustration of not holding space for another person and a fine example of what not to do in leadership. When we hold space for another person, we are listening, creating a safe place for people to share. Ultimately, we are demonstrating deep appreciation for the relationship that we share with another human being. We are saying, you are important and what you need to talk about today is also important. What have you learned about holding space for people? How has it served you and them? lori@hralliance.ca / www.hralliance.ca #executivecoaching #leadershipdevelopment #humanresources17 Coaches Teach You How to Hold Space For Others - Thrive Global17 Coaches Teach You How to Hold Space For Others - Thrive Global

Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisSelf-improvement plays a crucial role in leadership effectiveness, empowering leaders to steer their organizations towards success. Executive coaching can offer a fresh perspective on critical business challenges, leading to significant transformations. According to Mercer research, leaders experience a notable improvement after executive coaching, with a 70% increase in individual performance, a 50% enhancement in team performance, and a 48% boost in organizational performance. Leaders often seek executive coaching support during key moments such as transitioning into a new executive role, driving strategic transformations, nurturing successors, or managing complex executive team dynamics. Enhancing leadership skills through coaching not only benefits individuals but also has a ripple effect, positively impacting teams and organizations. Lori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisSo often my clients talk about how busy they are, that they need more time, or that they don’t have space for strategic planning and their other priorities. What do you need to say no to so that you have more room for your yeses?! www.hralliance.ca /lori@hralliance.ca #executivecoaching #ceo #chro #cto #humanresources #coachingLori Sone-Cooper CEC, PCC, CHRL shared thisIf your calendar is so full that you don’t have time to think, breathe, move, or eat…that’s not the flex of success….it's a prison. Your calendar isn’t a To-Do list for everyone else - it’s a reflection of your soul. Which makes taking control of your calendar an act of rebellion. The system doesn’t want you to do that. It doesn’t want you to pause. It wants you exhausted and on the clock. It wants you chained to the grind. It wants you hustling, chasing, producing. But you’re smarter than that. When you start taking control of your time & energy, people will resist. They’ll call you disruptive. And that’s exactly what you should be - disruptive to the status quo that profits off your exhaustion. Reclaim your calendar, reclaim your power! I had a blast earlier this month, chatting to my friends at The Social about the power of the pause. About 15 years ago, when we first met, he was a sous chef at a NYC sushi restaurant with a goal of running his own business. He and his wife decided to take a leap and rent a kiosk selling toys. At the time, I was advising the private equity firm that owned the mall, and we set them up next to Chuck E. Cheese’s and Carter’s, about as perfect a location as you can get for a toy kiosk. Fast forward to today, they’re still there, still going strong, and have even added a second kiosk. Even better, Ling not only remembered me, but went out of his way to say thank you for the help back then. A great reminder of what the American Dream looks like, hard work, risk, family, and betting on yourself. Ling won…..and so did the Mets.

She took the time to find my photo online and hand-sketched this portrait of me with a sweet thank you letter and sent it to me. 🥰 In a world of digital transactions and automated emails, receiving something so personal and handmade is a reminder that at the end of every file is a person with a story. In my work with senior leaders, I’m often struck by how much time we spend measuring engagement and how little time we spend intentionally building it. Engagement doesn’t rise or fall because of a survey cycle. It’s shaped every day by leadership decisions: how clarity is created, how trust is built (or eroded), how voice is invited, and how performance pressure is sustained over time. On May 28, I’ll be hosting our next Executive Breakfast, moderating a candid conversation with senior people leaders who are grappling with this reality inside their organizations. This isn’t a presentation. It’s an intimate morning of thoughtful dialogue — real experiences, honest dialogue, and shared learning about where engagement most often breaks down and what actually helps rebuild it. If this is on your radar — or a colleague’s — send me a DM. Seats are intentionally limited. Looking forward to a radiant conversation. #ThFutureIsBright #Leadership #ExecutiveLeadership #Engagement #CultureStrategy #PeopleLeadership #EmployeeExperience

When budgets are limited, how can you still attract and retain top talent? The answer lies in reframing your total rewards strategy beyond compensation alone. Today's professionals seek a holistic value proposition that includes flexibility, career development, recognition, and cultural alignment. HR leaders who help employees see the full value of their employment experience foster deeper trust and stronger engagement than those focused solely on pay. https://lnkd.in/geRswz4j Benefits Canada

AI for HR: A Game-Changer, not a Replacement I recently explored AI for HR by CPHR BC & Yukon, and I couldn't agree more with its approach—rather than avoiding AI, we should embrace it strategically, maximizing its benefits in a way that’s clear and comprehensible. When ChatGPT first launched years ago, data privacy was a major concern and the connotation that anyone who uses AI are lazy haunts me. Opening the application before just to paraphrase a commentary post makes me extremely nervous. 😅 While these concerns are valid and are still true at present, I've always believed that AI is here to stay. The key is using it wisely and creating avenues for people to leverage it effectively. What I loved about AI for HR is its structured guide to effective prompts, making HR work not only more efficient but also more impactful. The detailed prompts for each competency ensure HR professionals can harness AI while keeping data protection, plagiarism, and copyright a priority. AI, after all, should enhance human knowledge and output—not replace it entirely. Interestingly, this discussion ties into our WakeUp HR session last Friday, where we tackled an important question: "What do employers think about the use of AI?" The responses were as diverse as HR itself—some leaders welcome AI for its efficiency, while others remain cautious about data security, job displacement and accuracy of information. This conversation reinforced the critical role HR plays in guiding responsible AI adoption within organizations. No matter how advanced AI gets, HR will never lose its heartbeat—because it's called Human resources for a reason. 😉 #AIforHR #HumanResources #FutureOfWork

This book is that leap—for HR leaders, executives, and middle managers ready to move beyond performative change and into real, courageous leadership. We face a critical opportunity in Canada’s push to reboot and future-proof our economy. One of our greatest untapped natural resources? The leadership potential of women in STEM (science, tech, engineering, math). Yet women still make up less than 25% of the STEM workforce, and fewer than 15% hold leadership roles. This isn’t just a social gap - it’s an economic liability that worsens labour shortages and stifles innovation. Why does progress stall? Not due to lack of talent, but because of persistent cultural barriers - and the decisions made in the shadows by those in power. I've seen how executives can unknowingly (or deliberately) redirect teams toward a façade of transformation, draining trust and momentum. The Emboldened Warrior speaks directly to this. It explores: - The pack mentality that suppresses voices and fuels toxic norms, - How to identify and replace toxic leadership with inclusive, high-performing leadership, - The true forms of allyship that create meaningful change, - And why social intelligence: empathy, self-awareness, collaboration, navigating difficult conversations with positive outcomes - isn’t just soft skills; it’s the hard edge of future-ready leadership. I share my “living lab” journey of leading sector-wide culture change. It's not theory - it’s field-tested insight on what it takes to lead with courage, clarity, and purpose. This book is a call to action for leaders who believe in productivity and positivity, performance and inclusion. Because when women lead, economies grow. And when social intelligence becomes the norm, workplaces thrive. Got to: www.centreforsocialintelligence to be added to the pre-order list. It will be launched this fall. Also by clicking this link you can take advantage of the dynamic and impactful online training that will help you immediately improve your workplace culture. Let’s stop confusing motion with progress - and start building cultures that are bold, inclusive, and built to last. Globally, 40% of new managers quickly seek to change roles, whether or not the new role involves management. In Canada, organizations are facing the same challenges. Recruiting or promoting managers has become a difficult task, and keeping them in these roles is proving to be just as challenging. These findings raise important questions about compensation strategies and talent management. Here, we explore the key factors affecting the attraction and retention of new managers and offer practical solutions to address this issue. https://lnkd.in/eeZvH8Kx

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming HR practice. Yet an important question remains. How do HR professionals actually experience AI driven people analytics systems in their everyday work? I am grateful to share our research, posted on SSRN following the McGill University and UCW Business Tech Symposium and developed while I was at University Canada West. Co-authored with Hamed Taherdoost and Mitra Madanchian, Ph.D., the paper examines AI driven People Analytics Platforms in HR through a critical discourse analysis lens. We examined how tools designed to support “data-driven decision-making” also shape professional identity, power relations, and everyday HR practice. The paper contributes to ongoing research on AI in HR by foregrounding how analytics systems are experienced, interpreted, and navigated in practice, rather than evaluated solely through technical performance. AI can screen resumes, schedule interviews, and even suggest personalized training paths in seconds. But there’s a catch…AI can’t read the room. It can’t spot soft skills or build trust. And 84% of candidates still prefer a human for resume review and first-round interviews. For HR leaders, the challenge isn’t whether or not to use AI anymore. The challenge is figuring out how to use it without losing the human element. Our recent blog breaks down the practical ways AI is shaping recruitment, onboarding, and professional development. Plus, how to keep people at the center of every decision. Read Artificial Intelligence in HR: Examples, Statistics, How to Use it, & Where it’s Headed here: https://bit.ly/4mF3kOt
