Let's talk about the daily flood of link exchange requests... My team and I receive countless pitches, and 99% of them get an immediate "no". Why? Because they consistently make the same critical mistakes: 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟭: Ignoring Topical Authority. They pitch us without any idea what our site is actually a topical authority on. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟮: Skipping Content Relevance. They clearly haven't read our existing content to see if their topic even fits. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟯: Chasing Vanity Metrics. They're obsessed with their DA/PA but completely ignore what actually matters: topical relevance. 𝗠𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝟰: Forgetting the User. They never ask the most important question: "Will a real reader find value in this and actually click the link?" A quick reminder to all outreach specialists: Relevance & User Value > Metrics. Always. A "high DA" site is useless to us if the topics don't align and the user won't click. What's the most common outreach mistake you see?
Outdated Backlink Outreach Tactics to Avoid
Explore top LinkedIn content from expert professionals.
Summary
Outdated backlink outreach tactics include methods that once helped websites rank higher in search engines but are now ignored, penalized, or even harmful—such as mass link exchanges, purchased links, and irrelevant guest posts. Backlink outreach is the process of asking other websites to link to your content to boost your online visibility and authority, but modern search engines now prioritize quality and relevance over sheer quantity.
- Skip generic outreach: Avoid sending impersonal, templated emails or requests that ignore the recipient's website topic and audience needs.
- Say no to link buying: Never offer money or trade for backlinks, as search engines increasingly penalize paid or manipulative link schemes.
- Focus on relevance: Only seek backlinks from sites with content closely related to yours and consider whether their readers would genuinely benefit and click your link.

🚨 Guest Post Scammers: We See You. Got another one of those emails this morning. You know the type: “Hi, I’m James… or Abid… or maybe Nikhil? I work at Mash Digital (which Google and Ahrefs have never heard of) and would love to pay you for a dofollow link on your site. How about $30 and a shady backlink to a gambling site in 3 months?” Fake Names — “James Smith” emailing from abidmureed1107@gmail.com 🤔 Fake Teams — Signed by “Nikhil Sharma” from Mash Digital, but who’s James? Fake Profiles — Social icons go nowhere, or worse, to stock accounts. Zero Credibility — Checked their SEO stats. Domain Rating: 0. Search Traffic: 0. Confidence: infinite. No Personalization — No idea who we are or what we do. Just spray-and-pray. Buying Links — Offering money for backlinks = 🚩🚩🚩 Future Redirects — Wait 90 days and that “guest post” will reroute to porn, pills, or poker. 👉 Bottom line: 99.9% of guest post outreach is spam. Linking to someone is an endorsement. If you're not 100% sure they're legit, don’t do it—your site’s reputation is on the line.

Just got one of 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 emails. An SEO specialist reached out asking if I could make "one small addition" to an article they said I wrote. I didn’t write it. I have written for the publication, but not that piece, and even if I had, I wouldn’t be able to go back and edit it. That’s not how this works. The follow-up email was clearly a template. They even forgot to fill in the name of the article. ("regarding a potential content enhancement for .") Oof. This kind of outreach almost never works. Most writers can’t (and won’t) update published articles, and speaking for myself, I’m definitely not copy-pasting in something you wrote to make your backlink dreams come true. If this is your linkbuilding strategy, it might be time to log off and rethink a few things.

𝐌𝐨𝐬𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐤 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞. 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞—𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬. Matt Diggity just ranked 21 of the most-used link building techniques, and it was a wake-up call—even for seasoned SEOs. Here's the brutal truth: A large chunk of what many marketers still do—like blog comments, forum links, Web 2.0s, and automated link blasts—aren’t just outdated… they’re potentially toxic. In fact, Google is now ignoring or penalizing these low-quality tactics as part of its effort to fight link spam. What’s working in 2025? ✅ Guest Posts (A-tier) – still reliable when done right. ✅ Link Insertions (A-tier) – faster, cheaper, and efficient when sourced ethically. ✅ HARO & Digital PR (S-tier) – excellent for high-authority editorial backlinks. ✅ Citations (B-tier) – essential for local SEO, especially for newer domains. ✅ Image Outreach & Link Exchanges (B-tier) – worth dabbling in, if scaled smartly. Matt also reminds us: some of the most creative wins come from seasonal link campaigns and predicting journalistic trends. Meanwhile… ❌ Skyscraper technique? Played out. ❌ Infographics? No one cares anymore. ❌ Broken link building? Prepare for ghosted inboxes. ❌ Automated links? Risky and outdated. What’s clear is this: link building isn’t dead. But your tactics might be. Want rankings that stick? Audit your backlink strategy. Ditch the spam, double down on what moves the needle. Which tactic are you still holding on to that might need to go?

Link building, as we knew it, is no longer the same. Six major events in 2024 redefined the game - emphasizing brand-building and quality over quantity 👇 Because of this, BuzzStream is making big bets on the power of PR and brand over traditional link building strategies in 2025 (in both content and our product.) Here's what happened and what it means for 2025: 1️⃣ Google’s Email Guidelines (Feb 2024): My take: Spray-and-pray outreach is out. Personalized email outreach is now essential. 2️⃣ Google Downplays Links (Apr 2024): My take: Google values Link Quality > Link Quantity. 3️⃣ Helpful Content Update (Mar 2024): My take: Those "guest post sites" you typically find on Google Sheets or link marketplaces? Dead. Affiliate sites created just to make money? Most were wiped out. You can't cut corners anymore; you need a brand. 4️⃣ AI Overviews Launched (May 2024): My take: Fresh, data-driven content will help give you more visibility in AI-driven SERPs. 5️⃣ Google Leak (May 2024): My take: Links from authoritative sites—specifically from highly clicked areas of sites—that consistently produce fresh content are most impactful (aka digital PR). 6️⃣ Link Spam Update (Jun 2024): My take: Google’s AI is better than ever at nullifying manipulative backlinks. TLDR: It’s not the end of link building—it’s a rebirth, a refocus on the things that matter. ✅ Build your brand with high-quality, targeted outreach. ✅ Focus on links that matter from authoritative, relevant sites. ✅ Embrace digital PR to create content Google (and consumers) value. The spray-and-pray era is over. 2025 is the year of strategic, thoughtful link building and digital PR that drives your brand. See the full post in the comments. #SEO #DigitalPR #LinkBuilding
