I used to fix 100% of SEO issues. Now I only focus on 3. Every SEO tool on the market is designed to scare you. - Missing alt text - Meta descriptions "too long." - Multiple H1 tags - Keyword density "below target." → The list never ends. And every item gets a big red warning icon like your site is on fire. It's not. Google has been surprisingly direct about this - John Mueller said it himself: "Word count is not a ranking factor. Save yourself the trouble." Meta descriptions? Google rewrites them 63% of the time anyway. They confirmed they don't use them for ranking. H1 tags? Sites rank "perfectly fine" with zero H1s. Keyword density? "There's no keyword ratio." So what actually moves rankings? After digging through the research, it comes down to 3 things most founders never touch: 1. Internal linking 82% of internal linking opportunities go unused. One site added internal links — nothing else — and saw 2.5x organic traffic in 7 weeks. This is the highest-ROI fix in SEO and almost nobody prioritizes it. 2. Core Web Vitals (but only to "Good") Get LCP under 2.5s, INP under 200ms, CLS under 0.1. Then stop. Going from a 90 to a 98 on Lighthouse does nothing for rankings But crossing the "Good" threshold matters: only 33% of sites pass it right now. 3. Structured data This is the one nobody sees coming. → 71% of pages cited by ChatGPT use schema markup → Schema-compliant pages get cited 3.1x more in Google AI Overviews Yet only half of sites have it. Had a presentation with a potential client yesterday where I walked them through why a specific section of their site had seen significant traffic drops. What we uncovered was pretty interesting... A major subfolder on their site had seen substantial ranking declines since Google's recent updates. After digging in, we discovered the issue was with their review widget - a JavaScript component that loaded user reviews on each page within that section. Here's what we found: While the reviews were visible to users after a brief delay, the JavaScript was taking too long to load in the sequence. That meant Google's crawlers likely weren't sticking around long enough to render and index any of that valuable user-generated content. Why this matters: When Google can't see your content during the initial page render, it's like it doesn't exist - even if it appears moments later for users. In this case, hundreds of valuable user reviews weren't being factored into the site's relevancy signals. Working with one of my clients recently, I encountered a fascinating challenge that underscores how closely technical SEO and web development are intertwined. A JavaScript script managed the client's data layer. However, a specific cleanup function within the script unintentionally overrides key elements, including the canonical tag, and moves them into the body of the DOM. The main implication is that critical elements like title tags, meta descriptions and canonical tags are not visible to search engines. This is far from ideal, especially from a crawl strategy perspective. My Solution: 1️⃣ I identified that the cleanup function aggressively removed elements, even critical metadata when it detected empty values. 2️⃣ I am working with the client’s development team to test and deploy a fix, ensuring the canonical tag and other elements stay securely in the <head> section and the solution works from an SEO perspective. Here’s how we fixed a critical SEO issue for a site using Webflow for the frontend and a custom app for the backend! Javascript tech stacks CAN BE A NIGHTMARE for SEO, especially if not configured properly. Javascript powered websites using headless CMS solutions - things such as Contentful, Strapi, Sanity or using SSGs (static site generators) based on things such as Next.js, Nuxt.js, Gatsby etc are GREAT and have exploded in popularity. BUT, so have the mounds of issues that come with the fact that Googlebot STILL ISN'T GREAT with JS tech. Some of the main things to consider: 1. Are you using SSR or CSR? Server side rendering is better for SEO in that the server is delivering rendered output to the user agent rather than CSR where the client has to perform the rendering. 2. What does Googlebot see at a completed DOM state? Some sites / tech configurations can introduce delays in JS execution - if those delays involve dynamically loading content it can mean that Googlebot doesn't see the full DOM output - which can be a disaster if say core parts of page content do not show. 3. Dynamically loading JS content via interaction If your website uses classes to execute JS within a page to dynamically load content, Googlebot won't see it as Googlebot does not interact with elements in the dom. So - tabbed content for example if injected in by a tab click wouldn't be seen by google if the output isn't already pre-loaded into the HTML. 4. Resource availability Googlebot CAN render JS output, but, some businesses have inadvertently blocked resources from Googlebot - those resources may contain JS libraries used in the rendering of the page. If these resources are not accessible the output may appear malformed, or the dom may be incomplete. 5. Using Javascript to handle HTTP Headers/requests Just an absolute NO NO here. Lots of audited sites using JS tech stacks had JS based HTTP header handling i.e. JS redirects which would be triggered after an initial output had been served - this causes major issues for Google. For example - in my snapshot, a trailing slash URL uses JS to redirect to non trailing slash. However, Googlebot makes the request, gets the initial DOM output (for the trailing slash URL) but, it does not see the redirect. This leads to: > Google not seeing URLS with redirects > Google mistakenly classing the page as blocked due to other 4xx issue or duplicate google chose another canonical than user etc. > External link equity lost to URLS that Google doesn't see as redirected A NIFTY trick - use DevTools > Network with PRESERVE LOG with DOC filtering. Load your page & look at the RESPONSE tab to see what is delivered to the user agent initially. #seo #seotips #seotip

Technical SEO Tip: The Web Developer extension allows you to easily see what content on a page requires JavaScript in order to load: This is one of my favorite extensions when auditing sites for JavaScript dependencies. The Web Developer extension has a setting that allows you to "Disable JavaScript". If selected, it will load the page without executing JavaScript, allowing you to see what the page looks like. You can then analyze what elements of a given page require JavaScript in order to load properly. In this screenshot, we can see that Steve Madden's entire category page requires JavaScript in order to render the content. Since this is a high priority page, we'd definitely want to check to ensure that search engines are able to properly crawl and index the content. If you're doing a lot of technical SEO, I'd highly recommend downloading the Web Developer extension. This one feature alone is extremely powerful in being able diagnose potential JavaScript indexing issues.
