Here’s how I run an LLM SEO audit: 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟭: 𝗖𝗵𝗲𝗰𝗸 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗚𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵 Before we look at tools, we ask Google: → Does the brand trigger a knowledge panel? → Does it show up in Google's Knowledge Graph API? → Is the entity clearly defined or ambiguous? If Google doesn’t understand you, LLMs won’t either. 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗽 𝟮: 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘁𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 We create a single, consistent hub that describes the brand with: → Schema markup → “SameAs” links to social and press → Clear founding info, product, customer, and differentiator No entity home = no foundation for AI to trust. Most companies skip this step entirely. They pick high-volume keywords, optimize content, build links, and pray for conversions. But they never ask the fundamental question: "Are the people searching actually our customers?" SEO without search market fit is just expensive content creation. Here's how to assess it before you waste months: 1. Map search intent to buyer stage Look at your target keywords. Are searchers in research mode or buying mode? If you sell enterprise software but rank for "what is project management," you're attracting the wrong crowd. 2. Analyze competitor customer profiles Who's already ranking? Check their pricing, target market, and customer testimonials. If they serve a different segment, those rankings won't convert for you. 3. Test with a small content cluster Build 5-10 pieces around one keyword theme. Track not just traffic, but email signups, demo requests, and sales conversations. Real engagement signals matter more than pageviews. 4. Calculate customer acquisition cost If you're spending more to rank than the lifetime value of searchers who convert, the math doesn't work. Search market fit means profitable acquisition, not just visibility. The best SEO strategy in the world won't save you if you're attracting the wrong audience. Phase 3: Customer Research Talk to, survey and/or interview your customers to learn: - Problems before finding your product - Features they bought it for (and use) - Why your product vs other solutions - Other solutions they considered - How it solves their problems Phase 4: Topic Research Enter your competitors' websites in a tool like Ahrefs and export their keywords to reverse-engineer their SEO. Identify ‘seed’ keywords from your customer research and use general brainstorming to start your research. Enter your ‘seeds’ into a tool like Ahrefs and use the ‘Matching terms’ report to find topics to target. Identify topics to build landing pages around the different features or solutions your product offers. Identify bottom funnel topics like competitor comparisons, competitor alternatives, and best-of guides. Identify middle funnel topics like how-to guides, templates, tips, and anything relating to customer problems. Identify top funnel topics like glossaries (e.g. ‘what is X'), topic vs topic, ‘ideas’ lists, and anything to capture awareness. Phase 5: Content Plan Collate all identified topics into a simple spreadsheet to execute over the following months. Prioritise your content ideas by ease of ranking, commercial intent and potential traffic. Strategy done. - Fix your technical issues - Optimise your existing content - Create new content from your plan - Scale content production with AI (like Byword) And don’t stop.

140 SEO tests later... Here's what actually moved the needle for us. I ran 140 SEO tests on the SEOTesting website and used ChatGPT's Deep Research to analyze the results. Some patterns were hard to ignore. 👇 ✅ Wins ➩ Content refreshes often delivered double-digit % gains in clicks per day. ➩ Internal linking improvements led to consistent test wins. ➩ Embedding YouTube videos ended up with some of our largest click gains! ➩ Fixing keyword cannibalization (by merging pages) produced strong results. ❌ Failures and Lessons ➩ Small title tweaks didn't move the needle on their own. ➩ Broad titles increased impressions... but CTR dropped. ➩ Adding generic schema markup in isolation usually led to flat results. The main takeaway? Tests that added meaningful value (fresh content, stronger links, video embeds) drove real traffic growth. Tests that chased impressions without improving relevance or intent often hurt performance slightly. ⚠️ Quick note: These were all run on a SaaS site (SEOTesting), so your results if you were to run the same tests might be different. But the insights might spark ideas worth testing! :) Raw numbers: 87 test wins. 49 test losses/learnings. 4 tests leading to flat click graphs with no meaningful change.
