The F-22's canopy is an engineering marvel, two sheets of polycarbonate fused together through autoclave bonding and drape-formed over a canopy blank. What gives it that distinctive golden appearance? A microscopically thin layer of indium-tin-oxide (ITO) coating. This isn't merely for aesthetics; it's a critical stealth technology. The ITO creates an electromagnetic Faraday cage, allowing radar waves to flow off the surface or be dampened rather than reflect back to enemy systems. The result: the aircraft appears as a smooth, seamless object to radar detection. Beyond stealth, the coating also protects pilots from ultraviolet radiation and isolates sensitive avionics from external electromagnetic threats.
