Thinking about a career in medical sales? Hear directly from two UC Alumni on how Biomedical Marketing helped shape their paths.
Bryce Neal – Class of 2025
“If you’re interested in medical sales, I recommend taking Biomedical Marketing to begin building your foundation on healthcare language and principals while learning what true healthcare value entails. The second piece is developing your professional brand, such as learning how to network in the industry. Networking isn’t ‘connecting’ with every person that you know on LinkedIn, but truly taking the time to get to understand those in the field and what their role entails by building and maintaining relationships with industry professionals. In addition to Biomedical Marketing, the Medical Sales Club is a great resource to begin implementing this.”
“All 5 of my co-ops were through the College of Engineering and Applied Science as a biomedical engineering student. My co-ops gave me the clinical knowledge and technical insight into how medical devices and orthopaedics are developed across their entire lifecycle process. I spent time at companies considered start-ups, mid-sized, and at large industry leaders across roles in research & development, regulatory affairs, and quality engineering in both handheld and robotic instrumentation. My experience as a co-op allowed me to understand that every detail of the development process is tailored to delivering strong patient outcomes.”
Mark Sievers – Class of 2025
“Be curious and take initiative. Learn basic anatomy, understand the operating room environment, and talk to as many people in the industry as you can. Medical device sales is hands-on and relationship-driven, so showing genuine interest and a willingness to learn goes a long way.”
“I didn’t complete co-ops directly related to medical sales, but a marketing research project ended up being a turning point for me. That project connected me with a startup medical device company where I later secured an internship. Even though it wasn’t a traditional co-op, the hands-on experience and industry exposure opened the door to key relationships that helped launch my career in the medical device space.”
