Baskets are stronger. Margins are healthier. That’s the headline. The more interesting story sits under the floorboards… Sephora doesn’t just bring product. They bring Beauty Insider. Clienteling tools. SKU-level behavioral data. Associate tablets. Shade-matching history. Replenishment cycles. That is a very different operating system than traditional department store merchandising. Lululemon just hired a 25-year Nike veteran to run the company. In April, Lululemon's board named Heidi O'Neill as their next CEO, effective September 2026. She spent more than 25 years at Nike running product, brand voice and operations. The board picked her for her "demonstrated success delivering breakthrough ideas and initiatives at scale." Heidi said her job will be to "accelerate product breakthroughs, deepen the brand's cultural relevance, and unlock growth." The board and the incoming CEO sound completely aligned. That's the story. But I don't think it's only a Lululemon story. Every brand goes through this. The founders move on. The CEO who scaled it leaves. The culture that built the brand gets rewritten by the next leadership team. The people in the room change. But the question stays the same: who actually has the right to decide what the brand is supposed to be now? This is where my old world comes in. In pharma and life sciences, every approval has a named owner. Not a department, a person. With a documented signature, a delegation chain, and a clear escalation path when there's disagreement. When that person leaves, the authority doesn't disappear with them. It transfers, on the record, to a named successor. The decision-making system survives the people. The logic is the same for brands. Your brand voice, your visual identity, your category expansion calls - all of it gets approved by someone. The question is whether that someone is named, documented, and replaceable. Or whether it's whoever happens to be in the room that day. Authority control is a key part of how a brand survives a leadership change. So if you're a founder, a CMO or a Head of Brand, the question isn't whether your new leadership team is aligned with the board. It's whether the brand has a documented authority chain that can survive the next handover. And the one after that. Otherwise, you're rebuilding the brand from scratch every time. IN FOOTWEAR NEWS… Interesting dynamic unfolding right now at Steve Madden.… because this quarter basically showed the TWO completely different realities happening inside footwear in 2026. On one side? 🚨 Private label is still under pressure. On the other? 🔥 Strong brands with clear identity are absolutely COOKING. CEO Edward Rosenfeld was pretty transparent about it. The private label business, especially in mass/value retail, is still getting squeezed by tariffs, pricing sensitivity, and the simple reality that unbranded product has very little leverage when costs rise. And honestly? That tracks with what many of us are seeing across the industry. Consumers are being selective right now… but when they spend, they want: ✔️ Brand recognition ✔️ Trend relevance ✔️ Emotional connection ✔️ Product that feels differentiated That’s EXACTLY why the core branded portfolio is outperforming. The flagship Steve Madden brand is tapping directly into where fashion is heading: • Split toes • Hidden wedges • Mesh • Ballet-inspired looks • Velcro details …and they’re clearly reading the room correctly. A 27% spike in online searches tells you the consumer interest is REAL, not manufactured. Add in strong DTC comps and momentum across casuals, dress shoes, and boots, and you can see why they’re projecting continued growth for the year. Then there’s Kurt Geiger London, which continues to look like a very smart acquisition. The Kensington bag franchise is resonating, sandals are hitting, and the Meena Eagle slides have become one of those styles that quietly turns into a category driver. Expanding stores in the U.S. while partnering with Reliance Brands Limited for India? That’s aggressive global positioning. And I wouldn’t sleep on Dolce Vita either. The mention of jellys, raffia, and woven constructions moving strongly at retailers like Nordstrom, Dillard's, and Macy's tells you consumers are still craving texture, novelty, and elevated casual fashion. But here’s the BIGGER takeaway from Rosenfeld’s comments: We are watching a meaningful shift away from the dominance of sneakers and basic sandals. Instead, consumers are leaning back into: ▪️ Casual fashion footwear ▪️ Dress shoes ▪️ Boots & booties ▪️ Transitional silhouettes with personality And the fact that boots are still performing in SPRING says a lot about where styling is going. Nike Q2 Earnings: Net Income Drops by 32% Nike, a leader in the athletic apparel and footwear industry, has released its Q2 earnings, revealing a mix of both progress and hurdles. Here’s a closer look at the key takeaways from their latest financial report: In terms of revenue, Nike reported $12.4 billion, reflecting a 1% increase that surpassed expectations. Notably, wholesale revenue rose by 8% to $7.5 billion, driven primarily by strong performance in North America. However, the company's direct-to-consumer sales faced challenges, with a stark 8% decline, indicating difficulties in their digital and retail strategies. Furthermore, Nike's gross margin decreased by 300 basis points to 40.6%, primarily attributed to rising tariffs. In a significant downturn, net income plummeted by 32%, resulting in diluted earnings per share of $0.53. Additionally, Converse also struggled, with revenues falling 30%.
