Paul J. Walsh shared thisExecute with intent. Technology leadership is integral to a strong digital evolution strategy aligned to the organization’s needs. Executing on the strategy largely falls on the technology function, with the CIO ultimately making the tech investments, implementing the change capabilities, and bringing the larger organization along on the journey. Tech leaders should take stock of where they are and what they are investing in, and be very thoughtful about their choices and narratives. It was especially great getting to hear directly from our Sr. Vice President Paul J. Walsh and and spend time connecting with the amazing people who make up the Dublin office. Each visit reminds me how much talent, energy and collaboration exists across our teams. Walsh liked thisPeople Driving Performance | #3 For the third post in this series, I’m highlighting Peter Hodgkinson (former Head of Build/Head of Employee Experience at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team). Peter’s superpower is taking something massive (an F1 season, a department, a culture) and making it operationally doable, without losing standards. Three quotes from Peter. Three distinct high-performance lessons: “𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙖𝙩 𝙖 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙪𝙡𝙖 𝙊𝙣𝙚 𝙨𝙚𝙖𝙨𝙤𝙣 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙗𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙚𝙣𝙙, 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙩𝙤𝙤 𝙗𝙞𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩. 𝙄𝙩’𝙨 𝙢𝙖𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚, 𝙞𝙩’𝙨 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙡𝙤𝙖𝙙, 𝙤𝙫𝙚𝙧𝙬𝙝𝙚𝙡𝙢. 𝙏𝙤𝙤 𝙗𝙞𝙜.” Peter describes how overwhelming a season can feel when people try to hold the calendar, development cycle, and performance pressure in their heads at once. If the goal feels psychologically unfinishable, motivation dies early. High performers don’t "power through" overwhelm. They chunk the work so the brain stays in challenge mode instead of threat mode. “𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙬𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙩𝙖𝙡𝙠 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙙𝙪𝙧𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙚𝙨𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣, 𝙬𝙖𝙨 𝙬𝙝𝙖𝙩’𝙨 𝙣𝙚𝙭𝙩.” After major milestones or successes, the team would deliberately pause to reflect on what had been achieved, instead of immediately shifting focus to the next target. The goal was to create psychological closure and shared meaning, so people fully registered progress before the pressure of the next phase kicked in. This is great leadership. If you move straight to "what’s next," your team never gets the dopamine hit of completion, but rather just an endless treadmill. Closure is a crucial performance tool. “𝙄𝙛 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙚𝙙 𝙖 𝙥𝙖𝙮 𝙧𝙞𝙨𝙚, 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙘𝙤𝙪𝙡𝙙𝙣’𝙩 𝙗𝙚𝙝𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙖 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙠𝙚𝙧.” Performance standards at Mercedes were not just technical, but also explicitly behavioral. Progression and rewards were tied not only to what people delivered, but to how they showed up and treated others. Sustainable performance is not just WHAT you deliver, but also HOW you deliver it. This approach prevents "brilliant jerks" from quietly torching culture while everyone pretends it’s fine. The main lesson? Build systems that reinforce progress, and protect the culture like it’s part of the car. Because it is. 📕 This is one of many stories behind my book Driving Performance, where Formula 1 meets neuroscience to explain what sustainable high performance really looks like. 🧠 If you’re curious how these lessons translate to your own team or organization, that’s exactly what the book (and my work) is about. Driving Performance is available for pre-order now on Amazon (and all your favorite book-buying platforms!). 🔔 If your organization is interested in a keynote or session based on these lessons: I’m offering a limited number of complimentary sessions for companies that purchase books for their organization. In 2013 I was lucky to be part of the small undercover snatch team that convinced Pat Kenny to join Newstalk from RTE. His arrival to Newstalk was a seismic moment for Irish media and was the accelerator to build Newstalk into the success it is today. Pat brought an unparalleled level of professionalism and standards to the station and in particular gave so much of his time to mentor younger production staff and reporters. Paul J. Walsh reacted on thisPaul J. Walsh reacted on thisJanuary is not my favourite month. It is the beginning of the long haul out of winter. Both my parents died in the month of January, though almost 20 years apart. Just last January I lost a colleague from my Microsoft days for whom life became too much. A small favour to ask all my contacts on LinkedIn. If you have a friend, colleague, cousin, neighbour or acquaintance who seems a little off, or not themselves, just ask them "is everything okay with you?". People are slow to burden others with their real or perceived issues, but sharing can be the first step in getting help. Some may think this is being too nosey, but don't be that person that afterwards says "I wish I had known or I wish they had told me".

You cannot effectively address retail loss until you understand the motivations behind it and the broader ecosystem. There's no one more well-versed in the science and data behind retail crime than Read Hayes, PhD, Executive Director of the Loss Prevention Research Council (LPRC). I was fortunate to spend time with him on Vantage Points, where he broke down the complex motivations behind retail theft—ranging from genuine "need," such as household essentials, to organized "greed," like converting high-value items to cash. He also gave a window into the body of research that he's been building over the past 30 years, and what interventions and solutions show the most impact in communities. On this week's episode of The Frictionless Experience, we're celebrating our upcoming 2-year podcast anniversary by re-running our most popular episode ever. Mike Shady (former Senior VP of Online at Lowe's, now CDO at Staples) talked to Nick Paladino and me about customer friction and the loyalty ladder. Here's what still hits after 2 years: → Be your own customer Shop your site. Go through checkout. Experience delivery. The easiest way to identify friction is to live it yourself, not just look at dashboards. → Segment your digital experiences Pros and DIY customers shop completely differently. One needs reorder capabilities and bulk tools. The other needs education and inspiration. Don't make them use the same experience. → Build systems that catch problems fast Thousands of things can break on a major e-commerce site. JavaScript crashes, checkout failures, inventory mismatches. You need monitoring that catches issues before customers do and recovery capabilities that move fast. The loyalty ladder analogy remains one of my favorites: every smooth step up builds trust, but one misstep sends you crashing down. The higher you climb, the harder you fall. Listen to the full episode (link in comments) for Mike's real-world stories, including the appliance delivery disaster that perfectly illustrates why end-to-end experience matters.

📰Thrilled to join James Patmore and Andy Vanags the co-founders of alentr, as a Strategic Advisor Drawing on my years in retail ecommerce, I’ve seen that AI-driven pricing remains the most transformative and underserved frontier today. With shopping agents closing in, retailers must pivot fast. Alentr’s contextual pricing engine isn’t just another dynamic tool. It: 🎯 Treats every SKU as a microbusiness, optimising prices at the SKU level. (I know, radical concept eh? But so needed in today’s ecommerce) 🎯Applies real-time contextual value factors; from seasonality and location to social trends and so much more! 🎯 Sits outside ERPs, using a fully API‑first, MACH‑native architecture for seamless integration, flexibility, and freedom! The result? Intelligent upper and lower price limits, pricing decisions tied to the full customer context, and full margin protection, all whilst still driving conversions. I’ve already connected with a sharp, dedicated team. Their shared experience in retail ecommerce for many leading brands shows in what they’re building and why it matters. The market agrees: AI pricing is heating up. A recent research report from Dataintelo, cited that the global AI-based dynamic pricing tool market size was valued at USD 2.5 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow to USD 12.3 billion by 2032. Smart retailers and agencies are starting to see what’s possible with AI-driven contextual pricing. At Alentr, I’ll help advise them on shaping their go-to-market strategy and refining positioning, messaging, and outcomes to amplify Alentr’s presence in this growing space. Ready to see how contextual, AI-native pricing should be? Watch this space, and for now, check out Alentr.com. Should you want to learn more directly, then please connect with James, Andy or myself. #ecommerce #ai #contextualPricing #alentr

Walmart continues to show what retail adaptability looks like at scale. Their latest AI tools for associates don’t just make operations more efficient—they simplify, guide, and free up time for what matters most: the customer. By combining generative AI with AR and RFID, they’re showing how real-time intelligence can enhance decision-making from the shelf to the backroom. It’s a move that echoes the principles of The Agile Code—adaptability, experimentation, and team empowerment. 💡 What’s your “escape fire”? How are you redeploying time saved through technology? #TheAgileCode #RetailInnovation #AIinRetail #Walmart #AgilityInAction https://lnkd.in/eGQwTKsd

AI-driven “agentic commerce” may sound futuristic, but it’s already here. Worldpay predicts that bots shopping on behalf of consumers could drive $136B in transaction volume this year and grow to $1.7T by 2030. That’s a massive shift for retailers. For years, merchants treated bots as fraud risks. Now, the challenge is to welcome the right ones. Here’s the catch: those agents won’t negotiate with broken or incomplete product content. If your catalog isn’t structured, validated, and AI-ready, you risk being invisible to the very systems that will soon drive sales. This is the next evolution of the digital shelf. The companies making their product content bot-friendly now will be the ones positioned to win when agentic commerce scales. #Ecommerce #DigitalShelf

At the National Retail Federation, we shared how Google is helping retailers move into the era of agentic commerce, with a clear focus on improving real customer experiences, not adding complexity. And with that in mind, Sundar Pichai announced Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience. Here’s what it’s all about: Today, shopping and customer service are fragmented. Customers repeat themselves across channels, and businesses manage disconnected systems. Gemini Enterprise for Customer Experience brings everything together into one intelligent, continuous journey. For customers, this means faster, more personalized interactions with less friction. For businesses, it means higher conversion, stronger loyalty, and better service at scale. Built specifically for retail, this platform allows AI agents to understand intent, keep context, and take action, from product discovery to checkout and post-purchase support, while retailers remain in control of the customer relationship. This is only one way we’re helping retailers turn every interaction into a long-term growth opportunity. If you want to read about what else Google and Google Cloud are doing to help businesses grow, read the full list of announcements here: https://bit.ly/4jEwbSZ. #GoogleCloud #NRF #GeminiEnterprise

#NRF 2026 kicks off this weekend. Hundreds of vendors will try to tell thousands of retail executives why their solution is exactly what they need. As I shared under #NRFbird earlier this year, I hope (and have high hopes) that vendors touting #AI - especially those with AI in their product/company name - will be able to clearly articulate what AI technologies are doing to enhance or disrupt current business models. Vendors - if you have feet on the street in NY, don't let them talk to a customer before they can speak in business terms - and deliver the value prop in 30-60 seconds. If you can't share why adding AI to your existing product suite or how your new product built around AI technologies is a game changer for retail business processes, you've lost the battle before the first shot has been fired. #retail
