We all want to make our careers secure, bulletproof. Here are some additional words of wisdom to help you with that goal. We think job security goes like this: “if I just work harder, I’ll get recognized.” Sadly, this just isn’t true. These days, job security isn’t about working harder. It’s about being indispensable. Career leverage comes down to one thing: 👉 How hard it is to replace you Not because you work longer hours. Or because you’ve got the longest tenure. But because you: • Drive visible business impact • Communicate your value clearly • Are known beyond your immediate team • Think and operate at the next level In uncertain markets, the risk isn’t just underperforming. It’s being invisible. Strong performers don’t usually get let go because they lack skill. They get overlooked because they haven’t made their value obvious. When I read this piece from Harvard Business Review, and one point stood out: Leaders aren’t expected to be unfiltered. They’re expected to be intentional. Because your “whole self” includes: • Your stress • Your frustration • Your biases • Your worst habits under pressure And the higher you go, the more those things impact everyone around you. Strong leaders don’t show everything. They choose what’s useful. They: • Curate how they show up • Regulate before they respond • Communicate in a way that creates clarity and stability That’s not inauthentic. That’s leadership. I was listening to this episode of the Speak Up podcast, and the title says it all: “If it’s boring, it’s broken.” In high-stakes conversations — with leadership, in presentations, in difficult discussions — being “clear enough” isn’t enough. If people disengage, you’ve already lost influence. Julie Schaller liked thisJulie Schaller liked thisMy client wasn’t in a rush to leave. His role was fine. He just saw an opportunity to make a meaningful shift in what he’d been doing. So he started early. Had conversations. Built relationships with people working in the roles he was interested in. But he also did something most people skip: he got honest about his gaps. And then he went to work on them — so that when the role he wanted opened up, he wasn’t just first in line. He was an "easy yes". This isn’t rocket science. But it’s remarkable how few people do it when they’re not under pressure. The best time to start looking for your next thing is when you don’t desperately need it. Because walking through an open door as an obvious fit is a completely different experience than trying to convince someone to take a chance on you. PS: he loves his job and is so pleased he waited for the right role to open.

Julie Schaller liked thisJulie Schaller liked thisFun fact: I tap dance. Not professionally. Not even 'student performer' vibes. But it’s mine and it makes me so very happy. For 90 minutes a week I get to put all of my energy and focus into making the right sounds at the right time and in the right way. It’s seriously delightful. A few of my friends are on the same wavelength lately. We were trading notes over the weekend. One’s drawing random things — not for show (or even the fridge), just for herself. Another’s trying her hand at embroidery. (Slowly. Very slowly.) None of us are trying to make it any kind of productive or monetise it. We’re just doing things that light us up. I bring this up because it comes up with clients too. Especially the ones in the middle of a search or stuck in a role that’s draining them. When I hear that they're being drained to dust, I ask: - What’s feeding your creative energy right now? - What’s giving you that sense of accomplishment that has nothing to do with OKRs or performance reviews? It matters more than you think. The clients who have something outside of work that makes them feel like themselves? They show up differently in interviews (and life). They’re clearer. They’re calmer. They’re more interesting to talk to. Not because tap dancing teaches you how to answer behavioural questions. Obviously. But because when your entire identity is wrapped up in your job title, losing it — or changing it — feels like losing yourself. And that’s a terrible place to run a job search from. So whatever your thing is — keep doing it. And if you don’t have one yet, maybe that’s the move this weekend.
