I’m thinking about what works for me as a coach with ADHD and for me I need constant growth and challenge to keep my interest based nervous system engaged and healthy. I need stimulating collaborative partnerships and I need to push in new and exciting areas. My story is my story and I’ll share it and much more this Tuesday. #1 HEALING-CENTERED LEADERSHIP PRACTICE: LEARNING HOW TO PENDULATE In our first healing-centered leadership community of practice session, we practiced pendulation as a way to surface what is beneath our survival patterns. We live in systems that have been shaped by trauma: colonial systems, extractive economies, inequitable structures. Our histories and cultures carry the residues of harm, and whether we want to or not, our nervous systems mirror these realities. Hypervigilance. Survival mode. A constant scanning for what is wrong. Yet we all know “what fires together, wires together.” The same way our nervous systems have been conditioned by generations of trauma, they can also be rewired toward healing. And perhaps our deepest responsibility to ourselves and to the generations after us is this act of reorientation. Virginia Satir (one of my favorites!) spoke of our essence: the core of us that is whole, resourceful, and life-affirming. Yet most of us operate from protective layers. These are patterns we learned early on to survive. When we respond only from these survival responses, we risk perpetuating the same cycles of harm that shaped us. Healing-Centered responses invite us to pause and notice: • Am I acting from fear or essence? • Am I repeating a trauma-led pattern, or am I choosing a life-giving one? This noticing becomes the hinge, a pivotal moment of possibility where we can shift into responses rooted in flocking, flowing, softening, stopping, and surrendering. Pendulation is the practice of widening our field of awareness by attending or processing potentially triggering experiences in manageable segments. Spaces where you feel held, supported, and witnessed. These are what the REFUGIA.WORLD sessions are about. When we pendulate we begin to notice our patterns more. We also deepen our practice of resourcing ourselves to be in healing states.

If you don't have power, do you have a leg to stand on? Or, can you influence your way to success without it? The Seattle chapter of Culture First's workshop, "Influence Starts with Trust," facilitated by Christine Wickland reinforced the idea that Power may incite compliance, but Influence builds trust and willing enrollment into your vision. As if I needed any convincing... How do you invest in long-term commitment (AKA better retention) and willing enrollment into your ideas (AKA improved performance) as a leader? Are you people-first, inviting them to join you, or are you commanding their participation? How well does either work in the long-run for you? Have you ever felt like you’re the only person in the room who doesn’t fully know what they’re doing? Like everyone else seems more confident, more capable, or somehow more qualified than you? That feeling has a name: imposter syndrome. And despite how isolating it can feel, it’s incredibly common. Research suggests around 70% of women and nearly 60% of men experience it at some point in their careers. What’s interesting is that it appears to be increasing and is driven by constant comparison, pressure to perform, and workplaces where many people feel they need to “have it all together” all the time. I read an interesting article in the Journal of Perspectives in Applied Academic Practice about how coaching and mentoring can help people navigate these feelings: https://lnkd.in/egcsctCX Here’s a few small things that can help: • Stop dismissing your achievements as “luck” • Notice the way you speak to yourself after mistakes • Talk about it — many people around you probably feel the same • Keep evidence of positive feedback and successes • Focus on progress, not perfection Sometimes people don’t need more qualifications or experience but need support to recognise the capability they already have.
