  • HVAC manufacturers connecting their equipment usually face the same question: build it yourself, use an OEM platform, or build on top of an IoT platform that hands you the infrastructure. The deciding factor isn't cost or speed. It's whose brand the equipment owner sees on their phone. Raypak chose to build on a platform back in 2019. That decision let them keep the Raymote brand as their own, put real operating data in front of their service team, and scale to tens of thousands of connected units without building a mobile team from scratch. That's the case for owning the stack instead of renting someone else's monitoring product: you keep the relationship with the customer, and the platform underneath just does its job.   • Most "predictive maintenance" is actually just an alert when a threshold gets crossed. That's condition-based monitoring, and it's genuinely useful. Real prediction answers a different question: not "is something wrong now" but "when will it fail." The catch: prediction needs a baseline of normal operation plus real failure history. Detection doesn't. That's why so many programs jump straight to prediction and stall, they're missing data they haven't collected yet. The payoff for getting there is real too. One furnace OEM avoided a $100,000 recall and cut support costs by tens of thousands a year, just from connected equipment data.   • Adding a new device to your IoT fleet shouldn't mean writing new code. Most integrations force a tradeoff: manage a unique credential for every device, or rebuild your data pipeline every time you add a new sensor. That works fine for one device.     Your maintenance contract says quarterly. Your compressor doesn't know that. Preventive maintenance runs on a schedule. Predictive maintenance runs on data. For commercial HVAC and refrigeration, it's not either/or; they cover each other's blind spots. Scheduled visits catch wear items like dirty filters and worn belts. But they miss anything that develops between visits, and the most expensive failures don't wait for your quarterly appointment. Monitoring catches those failures early, things like a slow refrigerant leak or a compressor drawing more current every week. But filters don't show up as "dirty" in a temperature graph until airflow has already suffered, and every alert still needs a tech to act on it. So which one actually saves you money? It depends entirely on what a breakdown costs you. NASA lost the Mars Climate Orbiter because one system calculated in pound force seconds while another expected newton seconds. Every connected product runs this same risk.
