I had three sessions this week where the client walked in talking about one thing and we spent the hour on something else entirely. Not because they were avoiding the original topic. Because the original topic was never the real one. This is the part of coaching nobody tells you about. The  presenting issue — the strategy question, the team conflict,  the career decision — is almost always a door. What matters  is what's behind it. The leaders I work with are exceptionally good at framing  problems. It's often what got them to where they are. The  ability to name something clearly, package it neatly, bring it  to the table with authority. What takes longer — and what the work is really about — is  learning to sit with the messier question underneath. That's where things actually shift.

What Really Drives Your Behaviour? During the launch of my book From Behaviour To Wellbeing in Bangalore, someone in the audience asked me a question that stayed with me. “Your book describes human behaviour as one of the most important elements in the world. But is there something deeper than behaviour? Something more fundamental?” The short answer is yes. There are forces beneath your behaviour that shape how you act, react and show up. Here are a few powerful ones.   Genetics We certainly carry behavioural tendencies from previous generations. Not as destiny, but as possibility. An arrogant father doesn’t guarantee an arrogant child and nurturing can absolutely shift patterns. But genetics still plays a role in predisposing us to certain behaviours, temperaments or reactions.   Logic Human behaviour isn’t always rational and that’s precisely the point. For example, addictions, procrastination and avoidance don’t follow much logic. If you’ve ever hit the snooze button knowing fully well that you need to wake up, you understand how “logic” quietly influences behaviour in unexpected ways. Love Love makes people do things they might never have imagined. I’ve seen strong, disciplined, rational individuals become vulnerable, expressive and surprisingly soft when they’re in love. I’ve also seen it push people to stretch themselves, take responsibility and commit more deeply than they ever thought possible. Love changes behaviour in ways that few other things can. Attachment A behaviour becomes a habit when repeated, but it becomes hard to change when attachment forms. This doesn’t apply only to major addictions. Even something simple like being “attached” to your morning coffee can make it difficult to break the pattern. Attachment reinforces behaviour more strongly than most people realise. These deeper drivers don’t exist in isolation. They influence how you behave, the decisions you make, your wellbeing, your emotional world and the trajectory of your growth. So while behaviour is one of the most important dimensions of your life, it’s often shaped by deeper forces working quietly beneath the surface. Understanding these fundamentals and working on them can help you change old patterns, build new behaviours and move towards a state of greater wellbeing. Acknowledging presence of Natural World in a coaching conversation - to what extend it relates to "knowledge sharing”? As we discussed various perspectives on the ICF 7.11 addition to ICF Competency 7 description, some coaches referred to pragmatism of stating 'the facts'. Not all support needs to be reactive. The strongest organisations don’t wait for burnout, resignation, or crisis before responding. FRAMING. In photography and in coaching, it begins with the same gesture: choosing what to include — and what to leave out…not a rational choice. The photographer lifts the viewfinder and makes a decision - the light, the angle, the contrast, the colours, the mood, the instant... like a slice of the present, captured before it shifts. The image becomes still, and yet what it holds - the barely visible - keeps moving in the mind of whoever looks at it. And then there is what lies beyond the frame, the unseen that gives the seen its meaning, the shadow just outside the edge, the conversation that is about to emerge. 📸In photography, the frame does not eliminate the beyond — it conjures it: what is excluded becomes present by its very absence. And doesn’t it happen the same way in a coaching session ? 📷We frame together - what belongs inside this conversation, what stays at the edge, just out of focus, waiting to be named, and what remains — deliberately or not — outside? The coach and the coachee negotiate the boundaries of the frame, consciously or not. And then something unfolds, not captured so much as held: the session stretches the instant, expands it, turns it slowly in the light… what seemed fixed begins to move, what seemed clear begins to shade. What surfaces when attention is sustained long enough for the unseen to become visible is the core of the work, isn’t it ? 📷The frame does not contain the conversation - but rather it creates the conditions for something deeper to emerge. And exploring what lies just beyond the edge of the current frame, staying present to that silent « beyond within » seems essential for our reflective practice, doesn’t it ?

🌿What is Visualisation? Visualisation is the mind’s ability to experience a future moment before it becomes reality. It is not imagination. It is not daydreaming. It is deliberate mental rehearsal — where your brain practises an event internally so your body can perform it externally. - Neuroscience says: When you visualise something vividly, the brain activates the same neural circuits that it activates when you actually perform the action. Your body cannot differentiate between a real experience and a deeply imagined one. This is why athletes, surgeons, musicians, and leaders use visualisation as a performance tool. 💡 How I Personally Understand Visualisation For me, visualisation is the meeting point of three worlds: 1. Mind - creates the picture 2. Emotion - gives that picture energy 3. Action - makes that picture real When these three align, the gap between “thought” and “reality” becomes smaller. 🧠My Own Work During my trainings, especially when I teach people about goal clarity or leadership mindset, I ask them to close their eyes for 30 seconds. I guide them to see: -how they want to speak -how they want to lead -how they want to perform -how they want their team to respond Every time I do this activity, I see the same reaction - their posture changes, their breathing settles, and their face becomes more focused. Why? Because the brain is practicing success before success happens. That is the power of visualisation. Research from Harvard and Stanford shows: -When we repeatedly visualise a behaviour, -Neurons that fire together start wiring together, -Creating stronger neural pathways for confidence, performance, and emotional regulation. Means: Your brain becomes ready before your body even starts. My Experience (There was a day when I had to conduct a major training for a large group of managers. I felt prepared, but you always feel a little nervous before walking into a big room. So, I took two minutes outside the training hall. I gently closed my eyes and visualised: - The participants smiling - Myself speaking with clarity - The flow of the session going smoothly - The energy in the room rising - The closing applause I opened my eyes - and something shifted. I wasn’t “hoping” for it to go well. I had already seen it go well inside my mind. And the session unfolded almost exactly like my mental rehearsal. That day, I realised: Visualisation is not a tool. Most coaching sessions feel powerful. Very few create real change. Early in my journey, clients would say: “That really helped.” “That gave me a lot to think about.” They left energised. But nothing changed after the session. That’s when I realised: Great conversations are easy. Great coaching is structural. Without structure, the coach becomes the structure -  holding the flow, connecting ideas, driving momentum. That’s how coaches burn out. The shift happened when I changed 3 things: → Every session started with a clear outcome → Every insight ended with a behavioural commitment → Every engagement had a system beyond the session Because: Presence builds trust. I was doing a 121 session today with a wonderful leader developing our young children for the future. We spoke about her learning journey and the topic on NLP came up. I remember when I first started Successfactory 32 years ago it was a very popular approach used to develop leaders. It is based on modelling excellence and decoding what great leaders actually do. Like many ideas it was taken and adapted in many ways and started to get bad press for being manipulative... even though it was never designed to be. It just shows how important intent is in leadership. Take this forward to today and many leaders are still suspicious of positive thinking. And honestly, I understand why. Because a lot of what gets called "positive thinking" sounds like this: Stay positive. Everything will be fine. Just believe. We've got this. Leaders know reality is tougher than that. Markets shift. Strategies stall. Confidence dips. Teams struggle. Interesting pretending everything is fine, when it isn't, can destroy trust. And when leaders reject fake positivity, they often default to habitual negative thinking instead. Conversations become dominated by: What might fail. Why it won't work. What's missing. Who's responsible. The blame game kicks in. It feels good to moan, but it rarely moves anything forward. I'm sure we've all seen it before. I've even heard some leaders called Neg Ferrets or Mood Hoovers!! Real positive thinking isn't about ignoring problems. It's about thinking in a way that helps you deal with reality effectively. We often picture leaders as the ones center stage: charismatic, loud, visionary. But what about those who lead from behind the scenes? Think of a stage performance. The spotlight is on the star, but it’s the director offstage who sees the whole picture. They anticipate what could go wrong, prepare the team, and make space for others to shine. And this behind-the-scene leadership is in every sector, at every level of an organization. In a recent leadership workshop, when we explored this topic, it resonated deeply. People began naming those who don’t always speak, but whose steady presence makes others feel safe. They are called "Trusted anchors", "those who got you back". What surprised people most was that many of the role models didn’t see themselves as leaders. They were surprised to learn how much others look to them. 🌟 So if you’re one of those behind-the-scenes leaders, this is your reminder: your leadership matters. REDESIGNING LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AROUND BIOLOGY — THE NEUROFIRE™ WAY. Because when the hit comes — and it will — the leader who stays regulated is the one everyone trusts to hold the ground. This is the architecture of the NEUROFIRE™ System — experiential/cognitive pathway to redesigning leadership from the inside out: Stabilise the biology so the mind stays online. Build the emotional bandwidth to face heat without folding. Then layer in the frameworks. State first. Skills second. The dilemma is that we built an entire industry on the polite fiction that leadership is a thinking problem. So, we stuffed heads with models. Decision trees. Communication scripts. PowerPoint courage. Then pressure walked into the room…and the nervous system told the truth. As Mike Tyson said, “Everyone has a plan until they get hit in the face.” Leadership is no different. The email detonates. The deal wobbles. The board leans in. Silence stretches across the table. And suddenly the body is running the meeting. Heart hammering. Breath shortening. Vision narrowing. Ancient circuitry grabbing the wheel while the expensive training sits quietly in the glove box. Here is the hard pivot most leadership programs are still too timid to make: Stabilise the human before you strategise the leader. Train the biology so the mind remains reachable. Teach leaders how to interrupt fight, flight, and freeze before those forces start signing documents on their behalf. Make sleep and recovery non-negotiable — not as self-care theatre, but as cognitive reload for serious operators. Then expand their interior. Grow the capacity to stay present when conversations get sharp. Help them recognise triggers before those triggers start running the culture. Install hope — not as sentiment, but as a disciplined neurobehavioral ability to see pathways when lesser systems see walls. Only after that do frameworks earn the right to matter. Because tools work only in the hands of a regulated nervous system. Everything else is performance art. So, the redesign is blunt: State first. Skills second. Pressure reveals the rest. And when a leader is biologically steady? You don’t have to remind them who they are when the hit comes. They don’t flinch. They don’t shrink. They don't amplify their stress across the room. They become the calm that impact cannot break. That’s the moment leadership stops being a concept and starts becoming a force other people can stand behind. The #CoachMEModel has 'transition planning' as one of its parts to enable a client or team to 'as is' and 'to be' as well as all that lies in between them. We also love it as a focus on integrating learning about 'self' and the topic explored in the coaching session. 'What are you taking from this conversation into your real context? What ways will you integrate your learning?' Transition planning also encompasses exploring setbacks, dependencies and resilience. 'What might interrupt, delay or challenge this transition? Who or what needs to be involved, informed or considered? What will help you recover, re-centre or continue if things do not go as planned? What relational shift is important?' Transition planning within the CoachME coaching model invites the client to move from insight into embodied and sustainable practice. Does change always unfold smoothly? No. A coach supports the client to anticipate setbacks, dependencies, relational dynamics and contextual pressures. This strengthens resilience by helping the client identify how they will pause, recover, adapt and continue when challenges arise. Reflection is held both after the experience and in the moment, supporting the client to notice their assumptions, emotions, body signals, choices and impact as they act. Transition planning is a reflective, relational and psychologically grounded process that supports meaningful change beyond the session. Change is not a straight line. It is a living process. - Lewin’s change theory talks about change as a movement from one state to another: unfreezing, changing and refreezing. Change can be resisted, people revert to old habits, or need support during the “change” phase. - Kotter’s change model highlights the importance of vision, buy-in, communication and short-term wins. Contingency planning fits here if urgency drops, stakeholders disengage, or communication fails - projects needs alternative ways to maintain momentum. - Systems thinking is especially relevant. It suggests that when you change one part of a system, other parts respond. Some responses are predictable; others are not. If this shifts, what else might be affected? Who else needs to be involved? - Complexity theory recognises that in complex human systems, not everything can be fully predicted. Instead of assuming one fixed route, we often have to work with emergence noticing what is happening, learning as we go, being iterative adapting responses in real-time feedback. - Resilience theory includes preparing people and systems to recover, adjust and continue when things do not go as expected. The model is translated into over 60 languages including Klingon! It's a mission we have been working on to support inclusivity. Transparent #communication reduces political noise and improves #collaboration. AUTHENTIC expression builds #trust — provided it’s tempered by #respect. Where are you holding back what needs to be said - and why? Emotional expression is an emotional intelligence skill involving openly expressing feelings BOTH verbally and non-verbally. Often, we don't consider how we come across to others. On a scale of 1 (not so much) to 10 (very) - how self-aware are you? Ask 3 of your peers that question as it relates to you. Compare that with how you answered.... aligned or off? The work is in the answers.
