RIA IN INDIA | Reflections: Contextualising and Conceptualising AI Safety 🦺 💭 What does it take to build safe and trusted AI? Yesterday's session, co-hosted by Pria Chetty and the Centre for Communication Governance, sought to answer this question, acknowledging that different contexts pose distinct risks. Chetty noted that there remains a strong need for locally contextualised AI safety mechanisms and national-level risk mitigation strategies. Referring to insights from our Africa Just AI Lab, which compares National AI strategies in Mauritius, Egypt, Kenya, and Zambia, each country requires a unique regulatory approach to ensure its citizens remain safe from cybersecurity threats, surveillance, bias, and discrimination. The Global Network Initiative reaffirms these ideas, reminding us that safety and accountability must happen through shared, participatory practices and multistakeholder input. As noted in their #MAPAI insights document, "Governments need to play an enabling role by establishing mechanisms such as incident response databases and governance guidelines to enable transparency and help ensure that appropriate actors are held accountable across the AI value chain." INDIA AI IMPACT SUMMIT | Contextualising and Conceptualising AI Safety 🦺 As a core theme of the India AI Impact Summit 2026, AI Safety will be a central focus of this discussion, co-chaired by Pria Chetty and the Executive Director of the Centre for Communication Governance, Jhalak Kakkar. Bringing together academics, think tanks, civil society, and the technical community, the session will address the need for Global South perspectives in international AI safety debates. Ensuring that AI systems are safe, trustworthy, and used responsibly is becoming increasingly complex as AI is deployed across diverse contexts. Risks range from deepfakes and child safety concerns to biased datasets, privacy violations, and systemic impacts on labour, democratic institutions, and the environment. Yet AI safety debates remain fragmented, confronting various risk frameworks without a shared understanding of how these concerns translate into real-world harms, particularly in the Global South. As part of the #MAPAI Side Event, 'Reinforcements & Learning: Multistakeholder Convening on AI Governance', this session examines AI risks, moving away from abstract notions of "risk" towards clearer taxonomies of harm at individual, community, and societal levels. Drawing on input from regional stakeholders, this session will explore how countries prioritise AI risks and how shared risk management frameworks can be adapted to account for contextual realities. Chetty, an AI and data governance expert and African advisor to MAP AI's Multistakeholder Dialogue, will bring a uniquely African perspective to the discussion, analysing how AI safety risks threaten African states, where weak institutional infrastructure and a lack of centralised AI safety regulation disproportionately exacerbate harms. Chetty will emphasise the conditions needed to make AI safety mechanisms truly impactful in Africa and throughout the Global South, including self-determination, local context, and participatory governance. The difference between an AI product people trust and one they use with a sense of suspicion? Good design. That was one of the key takeaways from a session in the ownpath archives titled Design for Emerging Tech, by Akshay Kore (Senior Design Manager, Suki; visiting faculty at IIT Bombay). We often think of AI as a technology problem. But in practice, it’s a human problem first: how do people trust it, understand it, and feel in control while using it? As Akshay notes, the real opportunity for designers in AI is in shaping how humans relate with intelligent systems in a trusting manner. That starts with a few practical design practices. • Surface uncertainty. Don’t let AI outputs appear absolute. Show confidence levels, alternate options, or ways to refine results. • Design for handoff. Make it easy for people to take over when AI falls short. A graceful exit is better than a false sense of control. • Build explainability in. Even small cues (“why this result?”) can help users build trust and mental models. • Mind the emotional layer. Tone, timing, and microcopy often matter more than features in shaping how people feel about AI. This is what makes today an incredible time to be a designer. The patterns are still being written and you’re at the forefront of this emerging space.
