Apple Retail Staff Told to Warn Against iPhone Duo Walk-In Purchases

Some Apple retail employees have been told to warn customers against visiting to purchase an iPhone Duo without a pre-order on Friday, October 23.

Apple Store employees told MacRumors that they have been advised that there will likely be no ‌iPhone Duo‌ stock available for walk-in purchases on launch day. Staff have been instructed to discourage customers without pre-orders from coming in expecting to buy the device, warning that they will be disappointed.

Apple's online store tells customers to check back on Saturday, October 24 for pickup availability. Pickup reservations were briefly available when pre-orders opened before the option was disabled.

The October 24 message does not guarantee stock will be available that day, and it remains unclear how firm the warning shared with employees is and whether it applies worldwide. If the guidance is firm and widely perpetuated, it closes off a potential route for customers hoping to bypass the device's lengthy online wait times, at least at the stores concerned.

Warnings about a constrained launch began well before Apple announced the ‌iPhone Duo‌. In early September, Nikkei Asia reported that production had reached only a few hundred devices per day in late August. Further production problems emerged in late September.

Earlier this month, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said Apple had at one point believed production constraints could push the start of sales into November. The company subsequently assembled enough inventory to proceed with the October 23 launch, although supply remained very limited.

The extent of the shortage became apparent when pre-orders opened earlier this week. Delivery estimates moved beyond launch day within minutes, and within 30 minutes, all configurations in Apple's U.S. online store showed January 25 shipping estimates. The device is now effectively sold out for Christmas through Apple's online store.

Apple subsequently described demand as "nothing short of extraordinary" in a statement to the Financial Times, adding that it was working to get devices to customers as quickly as possible. Apple has not publicly specified whether any stores will have stock for launch-day walk-in purchases.

The ‌iPhone Duo‌ starts at $1,999 in the United States, with the first pre-order deliveries scheduled for October 23.

Some iPhone Duos are already experiencing hinge issues that cause display cracks, based on photos shared on Reddit and the MacRumors forums. Almost all of the display faults are right along the hinge, and most result in a line of bright pixels across one side of the screen. An iPhone Duo owner in Australia said his device cracked after being opened fewer than 20 times, and there was no...

Should’ve started manufacturing them back in April or May. This was done on purpose to create a scarcity.
No it wasn't. Its a first generation device for apple. Im sure they had all sorts of manufacturing issues. People want to believe this conspiracy nonsense where "Oh we purposely made them in short supplies so when they sell out we look amazing" which is total conspiracy theory level thinking nonsense. That actually hurts them in the long run in terms of sales. Think about it, "Sorry we're out of stock" is a HUGE opportunity for another company like say..oh idk SAMSUNG to sweep in and go "You know, we have a simular foldable for 100 dollars cheeper, how badly do you want a foldable phone?"

This also hurts them come the holiday season. What do you realistically think the suits at apple really want? a bunch of annoyed costumers who cant get their hands on their brand new 2000 dollar Foldable iPhone and go spend their money somewhere else? Or plenty of people coming in, walking out satsifed with their new product, AND KEEPING IT?

Makes more sense to me business wise if i can meet all the demands of my costumers and they are satsified with my product. Means, they had a good experence with buying stuff from me, they are going to remember that, and come see me next time they need to purchase another phone or something else.

I just hate this simple minded thinking that everything is a conspiracy and ohh...we purposly want to limit the amount of money we can make by making less then we need, just to look good for a moment, but then shoot ourselves in the foot profit wise when another company swoops in a goes "you know, our product is simular" or "You could spend your money elsewhere on other things!

Seems like a really lousy way to make money logic wise. Make an item intentionally scarce so its more desirable, but gives time for people to reconsiter the purchase in the first place. That to me is a dumb stupid plan.

There's a contingent of people whose goal is "complain about Apple". For them, if a device is in short supply and hard to get, they complain "Apple did this on purpose!", but if the device is widely available because Apple was able to make enough to meet demand, they complain "see, nobody wants the new XYZ!".

This was done on purpose to create a scarcity.
I don't buy the idea that Apple was limiting supplies to create scarcity.

1. On October 12, four days before preorders opened, 9to5Mac reported that Apple had increased its iPhone Duo supply-chain orders by approximately 30%, according to China's Securities Times. The revised target was reportedly approaching 10 million units for the remainder of 2026. Increasing orders by 30% (assuming the report is accurate) is hardly what we'd expect from a company whose principal objective was to create an artificial shortage.

2. Long ship times have a cost. Customers may postpone purchases, buy competing products, or decide they don't want the Duo after all. If the backlog extends beyond the holiday season, Apple also risks losing sales it could otherwise have captured immediately. In sum, a lack of availability turns excitement about the Duo into disappointment. Apple is much better served by having a lot of these Duos in the hands of customers.

3. The purpose of creating deliberate scarcity is to generate hype and desirability. Apple already had plenty of it associated with this launch. It had no need to damage sales and anger its customers just to create more.

In most markets it will become available about half a year before the announcement of the new generation. For a €2,000+, I think this is unacceptable, as you will be getting an already outdated device…
