Post-Interview Insights: What Matters in a Data Science Interview Had an interesting interview today, and it reinforced a recurring theme I've noticed across many interviews: employers are keenly interested in how you think about the data science process—not just the models you know. Here’s what they focus on: Validation Techniques: It’s not enough to list out k-fold or leave-one-out cross-validation; they want to hear about how each approach helps identify overfitting and why you’d choose one over the other in different scenarios. Sampling and Evaluation: Knowing your sampling techniques and evaluation metrics demonstrates your understanding of working with imbalanced datasets, noisy data, and measuring true model performance. Data Preprocessing & Feature Engineering: Before even thinking about model selection, they want to see that you prioritize transforming, cleaning, and enriching the data to ensure the model has quality inputs. Hyperparameter Tuning: Simply running grid search is common, but knowing why you chose certain ranges or methods (e.g., Bayesian optimization) shows a deeper understanding of model refinement. It's clear they’re not looking for someone who can just call .fit() on a library function—they want someone who can truly evaluate and enhance a model’s performance with careful, strategic decisions throughout the pipeline. A big takeaway for aspiring data scientists: it’s less about memorizing complex models and more about developing a strong foundation in validation, evaluation, data handling, and model tuning. 𝐇𝐞𝐫𝐞’𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐈 𝐰𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝𝐧’𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐨𝐧: ❌ Manual reporting ❌ Endless SQL tutorials ❌ Old-school ETL pipelines 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐛𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟓, 𝐀𝐈 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝟖𝟎% 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐣𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐝𝐨 ���𝐨𝐝𝐚𝐲. 𝗗𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗮 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆? 𝗚𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁! 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗽𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻’𝘁 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴? It is amazing to see how many options to learn about data science, machine learning, and AI have become available in recent years. I am often impressed by the depth of knowledge that many young data scientists have, for example when it comes to theoretical foundations, modern frameworks, or coding skills. When it comes to the “𝗱𝗲𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗼𝗻𝗲” 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗮 𝘀𝗰𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, however, I often have interesting conversations with colleagues joining from academia. The extensive coverage of e.g., model building and validation in textbooks lets them believe that a project is completed once those steps are done. In an industrial environment, however, it typically comes down to making an impact in the real world: 1️⃣ It is not enough to convince ourselves that a new AI/ML model works. Various 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗵𝗼𝗹𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 (𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁) 𝘁𝗼 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁. They often don’t have a deep understanding of classical model performance metrics. Being able to communicate with non-experts and data-oriented storytelling techniques are thus necessary for data scientists. 2️⃣ A model needs to be deployed for use. Depending on the scale and complexity of the use case, this may require collaboration with software engineers and experience in large-scale software development. Making sure that the 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗻 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗷𝗼𝗯. 3️⃣ 𝗨𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗱𝗲𝗹 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗽𝘂𝘁. Training them to make best use of predictions in their daily work requires domain knowledge, communication skills and an understanding of digital change management. Taking these other hurdles can sometimes feel slow and tedious. It does, however, offer the opportunity to learn a lot, to work closely with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and to see how your results positively affect their work.
