📢 Spotlight soil biodiversity Living Lab! ☀️ Desertification and land degradation have many causes. That's why in Nemesis, each Living Lab tackles its own soil health challenges that are common in their region, for instance soil biodiversity loss. 🌳 This International Day of Biodiversity, we introduce AgroForSoLL, the French Living Lab based around the southern regions of France and led by Philippe Hinsinger at INRAE. The AgroForSoLL Living Lab focuses on soil biodiversity in Agroforestry systems. 🌱 Do you have an experimental site in Occitanie, Provence, or Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes? 💡 Did you know? Mediterranean soils are in a delicate equilibrium, shallowness, steep slopes, and low rainfall make them naturally fragile. This is why the consequences of land degradation continue long after the initial disturbances. ✨ In the Nemesis project i-BEC the interBalkan Environment Centre develops long term plans that make sure that the strategies and technologies develoved in Nemesis go on to serve the region long after the project has ended. 🔎 Did you know? The Mediterranean is the European region that is most susceptible to desertification and soil degradation. 🌱 According to studies, the loss of topsoil is exceeding 10 tonnes per hectare per year, which is critically endangering Mediterranean soils ability to provide vital ecosystem services like growing food and filtering water. While multiple forms of soil degradation affect Mediterrean soils the resulting loss in fertility and water retention affects everyone - farmers, land managers, and communities. 📢 This is why in the Nemesis project EURICE – European Research and Project Office GmbH leads the communication and outreach activities and manages the Open Calls to expand the network of experimental sites and support the integration of soil health monitoring technologies. 💡 Why the human component of desertification matters ☀️ Desertification is not just an environmental issue, it's also a social issue. In some areas, for instance in the Spanish mountains, land abandonement can increase soil degradation. Usually plant succession begins after abandonment, reducing runoff and increasing soil fertility. But when the soil is already depleted, there are steep slopes, or repeated fires, land degradation can worsen after abandonement and desertification can take place. 🌱 This is why in the Nemesis project, School of Humanities and Social Sciences (SHSS-HSG) - Universität St.Gallen is leading the consortium in raising stakeholder awareness about desertification through social innovation. #NemesisFacts #Desertification #NemesisSoil Sabine Hoidn Universität St.Gallen (HSG) Lisa Siegrist

Countries across the Mediterranean are part of the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD), and other initiatives like LIFE, and the EU Soil Strategy for 2030 aim to restore degraded land and promote sustainable land management. 📃 In Nemesis, CIFOR-ICRAF ensures that we not only co-design soil management practices to combat desertification and land degradation in the Mediterranean, but also to translate these findings into policies. #NemesisFacts #Policy #NemesisSoil Zambella Pittaki
