Here’s a strategic way to approach it: 1️⃣ Know your limits – Be clear about how much you can contribute without affecting your own savings or investments. 2️⃣ Communicate openly – Share your plan with family; expectations often adjust when everyone understands what’s sustainable. 3️⃣ Set boundaries – Decide whether support is monthly, one-time, or non-monetary. Boundaries protect your financial health. 4️⃣ Prioritize your growth – Continue saving, investing, and building emergency buffers. Supporting sustainably means protecting your future too. 5️⃣ Review regularly – Life changes, income changes, and family needs evolve. Adjust your contributions thoughtfully over time. 🔥 Earlier this week, capital markets experts convened a panel at Sibos, a global financial services event in Frankfurt, to discuss the evolution of corporate DEI (diversity, equity and inclusion). The Banker / Financial Times reported: "US banks keep DEI efforts alive despite Trump’s crackdown: Lenders have adapted language to preserve such initiatives under political pressure." At Sibos Frankfurt over 12,000 members of the global financial community have come together to exchange ideas. But no one with capital markets experience is slated appear in conversation at the SHRM 'Blueprint' event later this month featuring Robby Starbuck, Head of Capital Markets for the Heritage Foundation -- the organization that authored Project 2025, called "The Blueprint for Christian Nationalist Regime Change" by Kettering Foundation. Starbuck has no employment experience nor education in capital markets, but said, as Head of Capital Markets for the Heritage Foundation, he is "committed to advancing policies that prioritize merit." Starbuck is best known as a social media influencer who has pressured large corporations to rebrand and reconfigure their DEI initiatives. He has solicited story tips from those who "want to expose your woke workplace." Starbuck posted this disparagement about the intelligence of Black women Joy Reid and Kamala Harris in a post on X (Twitter) today. SHRM said in a statement about Starbuck's upcoming appearance in conversation with Van Jones: "We firmly believe engaging with a broad spectrum of perspectives is essential for meaningful dialogue and innovation." 🏦 The Circulation of the Black Dollar The Challenge & The Solution ⸻ 🚨 The Problem: Economic Leakage • It is often claimed that money leaves the Black community in less than 6 hours, compared to ~20 days in Jewish communities and ~30 days in Asian communities (per popular media sources). • Caveat / fact check: Several scholarly sources and fact-checking initiatives note that the “6 hours” statistic cannot be substantiated by publicly available economic data, and that comparable metrics (days in other communities) are likewise not grounded in robust empirical studies. • Even if exact numbers are disputed, the idea of leakage remains a widely accepted framework: the concept that dollars earned in the community quickly “exit” before being reinvested. #ThrowbackThursday to a couple of weeks ago when I flew from California to Washington DC to speak at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation's 54th Annual Legislative Conference. Block Advisors by H&R Block and Boss Women Media (shoutout to Marty McDonald for the production magic) invited me to join the Wealth Talk: Limitless Possibilities panel. And let me tell you what happened in that room at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center: We didn't talk AT people. We talked WITH them. The conversation went beyond financial literacy tips and budget spreadsheets. We got uncomfortably honest about: → Why so many of us are trapped in survival mode when we should be building wealth → The money moves our parents couldn't teach us because they never learned them → How to break generational patterns that keep Black families stuck → The mindset shifts required to go from hustling to sustaining Here's what surprised me: The room was PACKED. Business owners, policy makers, community leaders, founders - all furiously taking notes. Some had tears in their eyes. Others were nodding so hard I thought their necks would hurt. Because this wasn't another "just save more and invest" talk. This was about dismantling the psychological barriers that make wealth feel impossible. This was about economic mobility as a community imperative, not just an individual goal. One woman approached me after and said: "I've been in business for 15 years and I'm just now realizing I've been operating from survival, not strategy. This changes everything." THAT'S why I got on that plane. THAT'S why this work matters. THAT'S why we need more of these conversations in more rooms. The wealth gap won't close with workshops alone. But when we combine financial education with mindset transformation, policy awareness with practical action, and individual success with community impact? The possibilities really are limitless. Black Tax and Your Savings: What do you think? As month end approached, Funsho thought about his salary. He smiled and thought, I will finally put aside more money for my business launch. But before the money even landed, three calls came in. His sister’s school fees had to be paid. His mum’s retirement party was coming up. His grandma needed a travel ticket. By the end of the month, Funsho had only money for his needs. This is what many Africans call Black Tax. It is the pressure to take care of family, sometimes at the expense of your own financial future. Responsibility pulls you left and right until your savings stay empty. You look responsible today but tomorrow you may question your decisions. Here is the truth. You can love your family and still build your future. Here are practical ways to handle Black Tax without killing your savings. 1. Fix a Family Percentage Decide on a set portion of your income, for example 5 to 10 percent, that goes to your loved ones even without being asked. Do it monthly as a thank you. When you give with structure, your love is intentional and more appreciated. 2. Have Honest Conversations Be open with your family. Let them know you are building. Share what you can do now while working toward long term stability. Speak with wisdom and respect so your message lands well. 3. Plan Ahead for Family Events Not every request should be treated as an emergency. Prepare for anniversaries and celebrations early. And keep these funds separate from your personal savings. 4. Build Yourself Intentionally The stronger you grow financially, the more you can truly help in the future. This is not selfishness. It is wisdom.
