Most graduate schools don't have explicit guidance for graduate students regarding their use of generative AI in their writing and research (according to the research Elena Kallestinova and I just presented at IWCA), which makes this guidance about using it in professional development all the more useful.

Last week, I had the opportunity to present at George Mason University's Faculty Staff Enrichment Day on “Beyond the Buzz: Practical AI Strategies for Higher Ed Administrators.” It was a great conversation with colleagues who are genuinely interested in how AI can support the work we do every day. A few key points from the session: ✅ Students are overwhelmed by messaging and often miss important information — visibility is the real challenge. ✅ AI can help us provide more relevant, timely, and personalized communication that leads to action. ✅ Clear goals and structured prompting matter far more than the latest trendy tools. ✅ Human review and use of open source information remain essential for accuracy, accessibility, and ethical use. What I appreciated most was how engaged the group was — thoughtful questions, practical ideas, and a shared commitment to improving the student experience. It’s encouraging to be part of a university community exploring what’s next while staying grounded in what students actually need. Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. Anthropic has launched **Claude for Education**, a new AI chatbot tier specifically designed for colleges and universities. This platform gives students, faculty, and staff access to a specialized AI assistant that supports learning with features like "Learning Mode," which encourages critical thinking through interactive questions instead of just giving answers. Major institutions such as Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champlain College have already adopted Claude campus-wide to enhance teaching, streamline administrative tasks, and prepare students for an AI-driven world. Anthropic aims to foster responsible AI use in academia while competing directly with OpenAI’s offerings and expanding AI fluency in higher education[4][9][1]. I was honored to speak at the SUNY ACT Annual Conference 2025, joining a thought-provoking panel on Education in the AI Era. My sincere thanks to Dr. Peggy Sniezek for the kind invitation and for moderating with insight and warmth, and to my fellow panelists, Dr. Jay Patel, and Dr. Christopher Scalzo, for their inspiring perspectives on AI’s growing role in higher education. In my talk, “Navigating the Post-Lecture Revolution,” I shared how AI isn’t replacing educators, instead, it is redefining the mission of education itself. I also highlighted our continuing education workshops at the Binghamton University Institute for AI and Society (IAS), where we trained 88 social workers and educators in AI literacy, resulting in measurable gains in understanding and confidence. Students trained real AI models using images, text & sounds — while exploring bias, accuracy, and ethics. 💬 “Kids absolutely loved it! They don’t see it as learning — they see it as fun. But underneath, they’re developing critical thinking and reflection skills for their future.” – Luke Holman, Curriculum Leader 💬 ✨ Outcomes: - Students trained real AI models (images, text, sound) - Teachers picked it up quickly: 20-minute sessions, no added workload. - Engagement was sky-high — learning felt like play St Augustine’s will now expand the program across their school cluster. Jay also shared examples of how university faculty are designing learning experiences with AI. This gave us the chance to see how higher education is engaging with these tools, reflect on the implications, and consider what that means for our own students as we prepare them for the next step in their educational journey. The latest Future Today Strategy Group Report and Amy Webb offer fascinating insights into the evolving impact of AI in education. More institutions are launching AI-focused programs: the number of PhD graduates in AI-related fields has tripled, while Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees have more than doubled. At the same time, as new programs emerge, many schools are wisely rethinking their curricula to emphasize soft skills and agility. What truly moves the needle isn’t the tech itself. It’s AI literacy.
