Employers across industries value communication and critical thinking. How will AI shape the way graduate students (and all students) develop these key skills? How can professional development staff and faculty provide students with structured guidance for using AI thoughtfully and impactfully? In this week’s Carpe Careers post (published by Inside Higher Ed), GCC members Ioannis Vasileios Chremos, Ph.D. and William Repetto, PhD share a four-stage framework for how graduate students and postdocs can engage with AI in a way that fosters learning and professional growth. https://lnkd.in/emRhuMYi #GraduateCareerConsortium #GCC #ProfessionalDevelopment #GradStudents #Postdocs #HigherEd #InsideHigherEd #AI #GenAI

Most graduate schools don't have explicit guidance for graduate students regarding their use of generative AI in their writing and research (according to the research Elena Kallestinova and I just presented at IWCA), which makes this guidance about using it in professional development all the more useful.

The question of what role generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) should play in education is a big and complicated one. Stanford University is among the institutions taking a hard look at what to do with GenAi. To get an evidence-based grip on the technology the university launched the program, AI Meets Education at Stanford (AIMES). A key leader in the initiative is Michele Elam, one of two new senior associate vice provosts for undergraduate education. Her university positions connected to GenAI include Senior Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education, the William Robertson Coe Professor of Humanities, a Senior Fellow at the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), and a Race & Technology Affiliate at the Stanford Center for Comparative Studies in Race & Ethnicity. Two of her favorite terms are “evidenced-based” and “evidence-driven.” Her explanation of what AIMES is all about: “As our teaching and learning community considers whether, how, and when to use AI in courses, it is essential to do so within the broader context of Stanford’s enduring mission prioritizing open inquiry and ethical citizenship. We also recognize that AIMES’s work occurs within the context of often wildly conflicting information about the possibilities, limitations, and harms of artificial intelligence. Therefore, one of our new initiatives includes helping the campus community navigate and evaluate all this incoming by becoming a resource for the latest, most thoroughly vetted research and scholarship on AI and education – leveraging especially the expertise on campus – to help educators and students make the most critically informed, evidence-driven decisions and choices about AI.” How this is playing out in different disciplines and different courses across Stanford is a mixed bag. In some instances GenAI is encouraged, for a few applications it is flatly prohibited, in a few other circumstances GenAI is allowed within clearly-defined limits and with a high level of disclosure and transparency. This is a work in progress. “AIMES makes it easier for faculty to share ideas and approaches to encouraging or restricting AI use in their courses,” said Jay Hamilton, the Freeman-Thornton Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. “As AI evolves, faculty are changing class policies and assignments.” #AI #generativeAI #artificialintelligence #generativeartificialintelligence #GenAI #StanfordUniversity #leadership #innovation #jamesthamilton https://lnkd.in/eVV7EJHJ

Will Artificial Intelligence Replace Human Knowledge? What college undergraduates think about knowledge in the age of AI. I recently had a fascinating conversation with my undergraduate students while developing an MOU for AI employment in their research papers. A central question was: What skills will actually matter in an AI-powered future? We discussed two concepts: domain-specific skills, expertise in one field versus general skills such as adaptability, communication, or critical thinking. Their response? Remarkably unanimous and eye-opening: to stay relevant and successful in tomorrow's workforce, the undergraduates (representing diverse disciplines) opted unanimously for proficiency in a specific domain PLUS strong general skills to apply and share their specialized knowledge. What does this tell us about the role and applications of AI in preparing students for the future workforce? Let's discuss! #HigherEducation #ArtificialIntelligence #Workforce #HumanSkills

Last week, I had the opportunity to present at George Mason University's Faculty Staff Enrichment Day on “Beyond the Buzz: Practical AI Strategies for Higher Ed Administrators.” It was a great conversation with colleagues who are genuinely interested in how AI can support the work we do every day. A few key points from the session: ✅ Students are overwhelmed by messaging and often miss important information — visibility is the real challenge. ✅ AI can help us provide more relevant, timely, and personalized communication that leads to action. ✅ Clear goals and structured prompting matter far more than the latest trendy tools. ✅ Human review and use of open source information remain essential for accuracy, accessibility, and ethical use. What I appreciated most was how engaged the group was — thoughtful questions, practical ideas, and a shared commitment to improving the student experience. It’s encouraging to be part of a university community exploring what’s next while staying grounded in what students actually need. Thanks to everyone who attended and contributed to the discussion. Looking forward to continuing this work together. #HigherEd #AIinHigherEd #StudentSuccess #GMU #FacultyStaffEnrichmentDay #PracticalAI

🧠 𝗔𝗜 𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 #𝟳 After spending over two decades diving into dissertations and theses worldwide, I've seen firsthand how students long for feedback during those critical summer months. That's when I had my 'Aha!' moment with generative AI. Picture this: you're knee-deep in grading endless papers. You wish you had an extra set of eyes—but not just any eyes. We're talking about a tool that doesn't replace us but complements our skills! Discussing with fellow educators and academic leaders, initial skepticism around this AI-powered tool began to shift into curiosity and excitement. Ethically, we all agreed—no machine can replicate human insight entirely. But think about the potential as an assistant! Schools face staff shortages; why not fill the gap? The inconsistencies in grading despite clear rubrics can be frustrating for both students and faculty. Here’s where an impartial second opinion could save the day—or even mediate disputes! Lost on where to begin? The AI's report might just spark that first idea or guide your evaluation process. I've personally put this tool through its paces every time a dissertation hits my desk. I make sure to provide my feedback first, then run it through the AI—just to see if there’s something I overlooked. Spoiler alert: we tend to agree! So let me ask you—how would you harness this technology? Imagine transforming your evaluative process while maintaining integrity and authority. Dive deeper with us soon; more revelations await! #highereducation #academiccommunity #edtech #generativeai #academiclife

Anthropic has launched **Claude for Education**, a new AI chatbot tier specifically designed for colleges and universities. This platform gives students, faculty, and staff access to a specialized AI assistant that supports learning with features like "Learning Mode," which encourages critical thinking through interactive questions instead of just giving answers. Major institutions such as Northeastern University, the London School of Economics, and Champlain College have already adopted Claude campus-wide to enhance teaching, streamline administrative tasks, and prepare students for an AI-driven world. Anthropic aims to foster responsible AI use in academia while competing directly with OpenAI’s offerings and expanding AI fluency in higher education[4][9][1].
