We were delighted to welcome Jay Rozgonyi, Associate Vice Provost for Pedagogical Innovation & Effectiveness at Fairfield University, as our guest speaker for faculty professional development. Jay’s session, AI and the Learner: Challenges and Opportunities in the Classroom, raised powerful questions: What does it mean to be a learner in the age of AI? How is AI changing the way students engage with their work? And how do we help students continue to think, write, and learn deeply — even as they engage with AI and other emerging technologies? Jay also shared examples of how university faculty are designing learning experiences with AI. This gave us the chance to see how higher education is engaging with these tools, reflect on the implications, and consider what that means for our own students as we prepare them for the next step in their educational journey. We’re so grateful to Jay for his insight, warmth, and thought-provoking approach to this important conversation. #AIinEducation #JesuitEducation #TeachingAndLearning #FacultyDevelopment #InnovationInEducation #collegeprep Fairfield College Preparatory School

As AI tools become part of everyday study, academic libraries play an increasingly important role in helping students use these technologies ethically, responsibly, and with confidence. Across higher education, students are exploring AI for drafting ideas, summarising readings, and planning assignments; but often feel uncertain about where the boundaries lie. That’s where libraries step in. Through workshops, resource guides, and one on one consultations, we support students in developing critical information literacy skills: understanding when and how AI can assist learning, how to acknowledge its use transparently, and how to maintain their own academic voice. By combining ethical guidance with practical support, libraries help ensure AI becomes a tool for learning enhancement, not a source of confusion or risk. Our mission remains the same; empowering learners with the skills and judgement needed to thrive in an evolving digital landscape. #InformationLiteracy #ArtificialIntelligence #HigherEd #AcademicIntegrity #LifelongLearning

A new semester means new discoveries! 🌟 @wilfrid-laurier-university noticed a gap in AI literacy and wanted to integrate fragments of technology tools and ethical discussions to promote a sustainable path forward for teachers. They presented the following question: “How can AI literacy be effectively and ethically embedded into post-secondary teacher education to prepare future educators for critical, learner-centered AI integration in diverse classrooms?” Using a multi-pronged strategy, the team developed new structures, classroom approaches and resources to help shape learning outcomes. One of the largest takeaways being the AIME model. All efforts were rooted with the purpose of promoting pedagogical expertise, ethical reasoning, and cultural humility. The case study shares that one of the largest outcomes was a shift from compliance-focused lens on AI tools. Professors began to see it as an ethical learner-centered innovation means to help support critical thinking and culturally responsive practices. After months of research, analysis and benchmarking, Iam sharing the findings of my MSc dissertation -a project that brought together my interests in AI, systems thinking, and higher education management. “Using AI in HE to Improve Operational Efficiency: Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (LTA) and Student Support” AI is transforming how universities teach, learn and operate- influencing everything from classroom engagement to institutional strategy. As part of this project, I conducted benchmarking study to explore how higher education can adopt AI more effectively and responsibly. The research focused on universities in the UK and those affiliated with the AMICAL Consortium analysing how students, faculty and educational technology leaders are engaging with AI and where the main gaps exist. Key Findings: • 98% of students already use AI tools, often without formal training or clear guidance. • Faculty adoption is growing but remains limited by a lack of structured frameworks and professional support. • Institutions are still at early stages, with fragmented initiatives and minimal coordination. Through benchmarking, I developed a three-tier AI readiness model (Basic – Intermediate – Advanced) and proposed practical steps to strengthen AI literacy, governance, and cross-departmental collaboration across higher education. This research reaffirmed a key principle: AI shouldn’t replace human teaching; it should enhance it and act as a partner in student learning. This work is dedicated to all who value education and innovation as means of meaningful change. #ArtificialIntelligence #HigherEducation #Benchmarking #DigitalTransformation #AIinEducation #Innovation #AIReadiness #MScResearch

Heading off to the Global Impact Forum conference in Pittsburgh next week on behalf of Penn State to present: Does AI Kill Creativity? With AI adoption skyrocketing in young learners, I will address how AI affects cognitive processing and critical thinking when students skip the 'productive struggle.' Crowd sourcing your opinion: How do you see AI and Experiential Learning converging in Higher Education? Are we reducing opportunities to produce deep, critical, and creative thought leaders? How does Higher Ed align and sustain trust?

🌐 Reflections from the Cambridge Generative AI in Education Conference 2025 - coming to the end of Day 2! I’m feeling deeply inspired — and reflective. Over two days, I’ve been immersed in conversations that challenge, energise, and expand the way we think about teaching, learning, and humanity itself in an age of generative AI. A few key reflections from my learning journey so far: 💡 Education reform is an autopoietic process — self-renewing, built on reflexive participation and collective purpose - Steve Watson 💡 Gen AI is a silent disruptor — demanding fairer, more inclusive approaches to assessment and learning design - Wendy Yanez Pazmino 💡 Educators must become learning architects, shaping experiences that engage Gen Z and Gen Alpha through creativity and care - Joanne McGovern 💡 Data must drive equity, helping us understand our students holistically to build inclusive AI literacy - Marloes Spreeuw 💡 AI engagement doesn’t replace attainment — it’s how prior knowledge and reflective use of AI interact that truly enhances outcomes - Barbara Piotrowska 💡 And above all: AI should be an expansion of humanity, not its sequel. This experience has reaffirmed that the future of higher education requires a shift in curricula, assessment, university models, and our social contract with society itself. Feeling energised to keep building spaces where dialogue, compassion, and innovation meet. Thank you for your company and conversations so far David Sorrentino #AIinEducation #HigherEducation #GenerativeAI #EdTech #LearningDesign #AIliteracy

Craig Mundie's warning to stop thinking of AI as tool but rather as a new intelligent species with whom we will either co-exist or hybridize (or be eliminated by) has me radically reconsidering the benefits of an incremental growth strategy. What would a "back from the future" mindset with this premise at the center look like for humanity, or, at least, our little slice of it in higher ed?

🚨 AI in the Classroom: Opportunity or Challenge? 🚨 AI is rapidly transforming education, from ed-tech products to federal priorities, but are we prepared? CERL’s recent research highlights a striking gap: while 68% of middle school students say they’re confident understanding AI, only 9% of K-12 social studies teachers feel ready to teach it. Our new Substack post, “Civic Education in the Age of AI,” explores how the Center for Civic Education's programs We the People and Project Citizen offer solutions: ✅ Performance-based assessments that encourage collaboration & real-time thinking ✅ Project-based learning that grounds students in authentic, community-focused work ✅ Media literacy instruction that teaches students to critically evaluate AI content ✅ Civic skill-building that fosters civil discourse & engagement, which AI cannot replicate AI is a powerful tool, but our substack piece reminds readers that human connection, mentorship, and authentic engagement remain irreplaceable.
