The conversation centered on a clear shift: customers are prioritizing manufacturing scale and speed of innovation simultaneously and that’s reshaping the competitive landscape. Jonathan brings more than four decades of aviation leadership experience, including 25 years as Chairman and CEO of Mesa Air Group. His background in scaling aviation platforms, navigating regulated markets, executing complex transactions, and allocating capital strategically strengthens XTI’s next phase of growth. This appointment reflects XTI Aerospace’s strategic focus on leadership in the drone and unmanned aircraft systems market, supported by a disciplined, opportunistic M&A strategy and a long-term approach to platform building. Jonathan previously led Mesa Air Group’s exploration of next-generation aviation technologies, including VTOL platforms, and oversaw a strategic investment in XTI announced in 2024. His addition to the Board further reinforces XTI’s capital strategy, deal-making capability, and access to private markets as the Company scales its UAS platform through Drone Nerds. Jonathan will serve as an independent director and chair the Board’s Nominating and Corporate Governance Committee, and will also serve on the Audit and Compensation Committees. Recent global security developments continue to highlight the growing importance of resilient drone supply chains, rapid technological advancement, and reliable access to unmanned capabilities across defense, logistics, intelligence, and humanitarian missions. Consistent with these trends, XTI Aerospace is pursuing opportunities to support U.S. national security initiatives and has submitted solutions for consideration to programs advancing unmanned and expeditionary capabilities. This includes the submission of XTI’s SkyRunner VTOL Strike UAS for consideration under the Defense Innovation Unit’s Runway Independent Maritime & Expeditionary Strike (RIMES) program, designed to enable runway-independent deployment and rapid-response strike capabilities in maritime and expeditionary environments. In addition, XTI has submitted an innovative Power and Propulsion Architecture solution for consideration to the Naval Air Warfare Center Aircraft Division (NAWCAD) to support high-speed, long-range, and persistent unmanned operations aligned with evolving naval mission priorities. Three signals, one system-level shift: • The UK is exploring fiber-optic drone control, effectively bypassing electronic warfare assumptions that have defined UAS strategy for years. • China is operationalizing expendable fighters, reframing aircraft not as assets to preserve, but as consumables to deploy. • Japan just put a 2028 stake in the ground for flying cars, introducing a real forcing function for regulators globally. Individually, these look like regional or tactical developments. Together, they expose a deeper tension: Military timelines are compressing innovation cycles, while commercial ecosystems are still optimizing for stability. That gap raises uncomfortable questions: What happens when defense-driven cost curves undercut commercial drone economics? How do regulators respond when deployment timelines are no longer hypothetical? Can infrastructure and certification frameworks evolve fast enough to stay relevant? We’re entering a phase where vertical mobility is no longer being defined by market readiness - but by operational necessity. The winners won’t be the most advanced technically.
