Today I’m remembering friends I had the honor of serving alongside: Sgt Gordon Gross (2001) Sgt Seth Garceau (March 4, 2005) SMSgt Drew Phillips (October 15, 1965–January 24, 2015) SSgt Thien Nguyen (October 22, 2019) MSgt Tim McCarthy (April 8, 1984–October 25, 2019) MSgt Chris Messer (November 24, 2020) SSgt Zach Pyle (1993–April 3, 2021) MSgt Kyle Dreke (November 23, 1985–November 5, 2021) TSgt Paul Sugarman (March 5, 2023) Col Michael Fugett (1977–May 11, 2023) MSgt Sam Callison (June 17, 2023) Some were lost in war. Some after they came home. All mattered. They were husbands, dads, sons, brothers, leaders, the kind of friends you laughed hard with, trusted completely, and assumed you’d get more time with. Ryan Padgett shared thisAnd just like that, this chapter is done. I graduated Magna Cum Laude, which I'll be honest, I worked hard for. BUT that said, there's one lesson I learned from my military retirement that applies here: It's not awards you earn that matter most...it's who's in your front row. Over the past couple years, its been my wife and kids that gave me the space and time to dedicate to my education. It's my best friend Jack Hullman driving 8 hours to come to the ceremony. Its also people that mentored me out of my military transition, supported me, taught me, and encouraged me to go after bigger dreams I didn't have the confidence to go after on my own. Sooo, in no particular order, big thanks to The COMMIT Foundation, Cadence International , Officers' Christian Fellowship ,Student Veterans of America , and the Veterans and Military Affairs Office at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs . Sooo, Jamie Efaw , Royce Bervig , Jon Macaskill , Jayme Hentig, PhD, MBA, MPH(c) , Abby Kinch, Ph.D., Andrea B. Baker, Ph.D. , Lindsay Fahey , Jeff Deickman, Crista Hill , David Hutchings , Brian Kleager , JC Glick and a bunch of other folks, I owe a big part of my walk across the stage to you(and some others I didn have room to list). And last but not least, to my dad up in Heaven, thanks for all you did to raise me. I hope you were smiling down today:-) Next step: Starting my masters in Clinical Mental Health Counseling this summer at Colorado Christian University !!! (Oh yeah..I was a little late into the game, but I made it into Psi Chi The International Honor Society in Psychology this term too..Thanks for the honor!)

Ryan Padgett shared thisBig thank you to Betsy Morris and California Fly Fisher Magazine featuring Bold Face Fly Fishing Foundation Inc.(501c3) ! But thankfully, not just us; her article on the therapeutic value of fly fishing highlighted the missions of our friends at Project Healing Waters , The Mayfly Project , Casting for Recovery and Cast Hope , who have all learned a similar lesson: that fly fishing brings people together, and gives folks something deep that we all need...It gives us all something we love to do, a place we feel at home, and a tribe to do it with. Whether you're a veteran(Project Healing Waters & Bold Face), current or former 1st responder and/or healthcare worker(Bold Face) a breast cancer survivor(Casting for Recovery), or have/know an at-risk youth/teen(Cast Hope), or one thats in the foster care system(Mayfly Project), these are all incredible organizations that would love to connect with you. And I know the article couldn't mention every great organization, but one in particular I want to throw out there as well is Reeling In Serenity , and helping lead them is my friend Andy Weiner. This is one thats particularly close to my heart; my dad suffered through addiction for most of his life before finding sustained recovery, and CfR's mission is to help men and women in exactly this situation, through something my dad and I have loved most of our lives. Ryan Padgett shared thisOver the past few months I’ve been praying a pretty simple prayer: “God, open and close whatever doors you want, and I’ll walk through whichever one you leave open.” Well… apparently sometimes He opens two. I’m grateful (and honestly still a little stunned) to share that I’ve been accepted into the Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling programs at both the University of Colorado Colorado Springs and Colorado Christian University. After a lot of prayer and a few unexpected twists—including a waitlist that gave my ego a small but healthy check—I’ll be moving forward with Colorado Christian University as I continue the path toward becoming a licensed counselor. Even more exciting, it looks like I’ll also be working with STATUS CODE 4 INC , a Colorado Springs nonprofit that provides mental health support for first responders and veterans—two communities that have been close to my heart for many years. There were a lot of moments in this process where doors closed, reopened, and sometimes opened in ways I definitely didn’t plan. Looking back, it’s one of those seasons where you can clearly see God working through timing, relationships, and just a little bit of mustard-seed-sized faith. Fair warning though: I’ve never been very good at telling short stories… so if you grab a cup of coffee first, that might help. Recently, I was selected to be one of the University of Colorado Colorado Springs' s "Stories of Possibility". I was able to share a little bit of my story since I transitioned out of the military with an incredible production team, who put in hours and days of work to share how I came to UCCS, and what it's meant to me to be a UCCS Mountain Lion. Just wanted to send a big thank you to Garrett Dahms and the whole production team for an amazing job. But there were a whole team of people doing what they do everyday, that made the reality of my story come to life. Crista Hill , Jeff Deickman , Selina Jacobs , and the rest of the Veterans and Military Affairs office got me from "lost student" to in class in under two weeks from when I first walked in. But there have also been some incredible professors and TA's who've both encouraged me and challenged me. Andrea B. Baker, Ph.D. , Bill Bannister , Lindsay Fahey , Ellie McLane, and a bunch of others....Thank you:-) Jennifer Sobanet thanks for leading such a great school! Oh, and one other big one....In the story it mentioned me talking to some mentors to decide to go back to school, and my work with the Bold Face Fly Fishing Foundation Inc.(501c3). There were months of some of the most important conversations I had in my life, and those came from Jamie Efaw , Reggie Mills , Scott Vedder , and even JC Glick from The COMMIT Foundation who taught me how to find my why..and to follow it(and big thanks to Jon Macaskill. for kicking my butt into joining COMMIT!LOL) And my Bold Face team Ryan Avezzie ,Mark Bieda (USAF ret) , Steve Davis , Glenn L. , James H. Many are first-generation Americans working for an extraordinarily profitable company that too often treats workers as disposable instead of essential. One conversation with Teamsters leadership stuck with me: “We won’t flinch if you don’t flinch.” They were asking me to stand firm when corporate interests apply pressure — and as a combat veteran, that’s exactly what I’ll do. I stand by my values, and I stand with workers.

It's hard enough to get police to trust us and this doesn't help. First responders, I hope you know that there are therapists who specialize in supporting you, many are former first responders. Coalesced 45 years of USAF NEO lessons learned with state-of-the-art aircrew expert experience to create a 26-page pre-planning and execution guide for mobility crews faced with NEO support and little to no prior experience. The guide was accepted and published to every C-5 Galaxy crew member's required electronic publications. Further designed aircrew mission planning…

The guide was accepted and published to every C-5 Galaxy crew member's required electronic publications. Further designed aircrew mission planning training curriculum to prepare crews for NEOs. Two years later, the guide proved instrumental in devising the rapid response plan for Operation: Allies Refuge, the largest aerial Non-Combantant Evacuation in history. The kits designed from the guides direction allowed mobility crews to reduce aircraft turnaround times and both passenger/crew safety, reducing both the number of casualties and safety incidents. The operation successfully evacuated 123,000 personnel in two weeks. I was awarded the Air Force Commendation medal.
