John Langford posted thisLast Friday, January 30, was my final day as CEO of Project Healing Waters, which I was privileged to lead for just over three years. I'm very proud of the important work we did together, and am grateful for my amazing and dedicated staff; the volunteers who remain the point of impact for the mission; the donors, partners and investors for whom "ROI" means life-changing and even lifesaving programmatic impact on the lives of Veterans across the country; and mostly to the Veteran participants who continue to trust in the PHW tribe, which comes alongside each of them on their own unique healing journey - THANK YOU. I'm stepping forward in faith for what's next, so if you have any "leads or needs" please message me. Tight Lines

John Langford shared thisCameron Cushman is a truly gifted storyteller and Project Healing Waters is blessed to be able to partner with him. Thank you Cam, I’m looking forward to seeing the powerful stories you’ll be bringing to life in 2026!John Langford shared thisAs the year came to a close yesterday, I look back on one heck of a year behind the camera. From chasing the Old Glory Ultra across the entire country with Veteran Made, to multiple projects with Project Healing Waters, last year was built on movement, trust, and stories rooted in purpose. It took me from long stretches of highway to quiet moments behind the camera that don’t always make the highlight reel. I had the chance to collaborate with brands and organizations like BURLEBO, The Athena Foundation Inc., onXmaps, Inc., and many many more while also diving into projects closer to home, working on a show covering the Darby Rodeo, and continuing to create with community staples like Bitterroot Brewing. And beyond the client list, countless passion projects filled the spaces in between, keeping the work honest and the creativity sharp. Last year reinforced why I do this work. Not for polished perfection, but for real moments, real people, and stories that carry weight. The kind that requires time, patience, and showing up. To every client who trusted me, every collaborator who put in the miles, and every person who let me tell a piece of their story, thank you. Heading into the next year grateful, grounded, and ready to keep building. Let's get to work. #filmmaking #marketing

After 26 years of service — including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan — he found a new challenge waiting for him high in the mountains of Leadville, Colorado. Now entering his fifth year with Team Leadville, Jason is once again training to take on one of the toughest races in the country, all while helping raise funds and awareness in support of veterans and first responders through Boulder Crest Foundation. But this race isn’t just about endurance. At nearly 14,000 feet above sea level, Leadville pushes runners to their absolute limits — physically, mentally, and emotionally. For Jason and the rest of Team Leadville, every mile is tied to a deeper purpose: showing up for those still fighting battles long after the uniform comes off. It’s preparation, persistence, networking, timing, support systems, and sometimes a conversation at a kid’s birthday party that changes everything. We’re incredibly proud that Hope For The Warriors® and Jobscan could play a role in helping create traction during the process, but the hard work, resilience, and determination were all Justin. Also, major shoutout to Kristy Warren, CPCC for the outstanding coaching and support she continues to provide our veteran community every single day. Wishing you nothing but success in this next chapter, Justin R. Go crush it. 🇺🇸John Langford liked thisI finally got a job! Here are the major takeaways from the journey. I started actively applying as I began my transition from a 365-day Active-Duty mission in October. The mission (and my income) ended mid-February. I got my first interview in March which didn't land. I paid for resume and LinkedIn writing help. I leveraged AI to identify ATS Keywords in Job Descriptions to help tailor my resume. I don't recommend these approaches. The best approach I found was to work with Hope For The Warriors® https://lnkd.in/ePGVk2x7. They offered a free license to use an amazing tool called Jobscan. I started getting a ton more traction on the applications I submitted. I'm still seeing the results. I have nothing but resounding accolades for both Hope for the Warriors and Jobscan. Consider donating to Hope for the Warriors or leveraging the Jobscan tool for yourself. Special thanks to Kristy Warren, CPCC for working so diligently to help me with this transition. The thing that ultimately got me a job was a random conversation with Jacob Brumble (one of the dad's at my son's birthday party). He introduced me to an old college roommate that works for Blue Team Alpha. A month later, I signed an offer and am SUPER excited to start my next journey as BTA's Lead Infrastructure Engineer! "Why" they fought and all they sacrificed toward that end 🇺🇸 Inspirational leadership lessons galore: - TEAMWORK: Coordination and communication proved victorious for the North with a new Commander (MG Meade) who took charge of a 100,000+ Army just days prior - TONE: “Take those [enemy] colors!” - Union MG Hancock directing a successful charge of The 1st Minnesota Regiment at Cemetery Ridge on July 2nd. Hancock said of the action, “No soldiers on any field, in this or any other country, ever displayed grander heroism.” - TENACITY: Out of ammunition on July 2nd, the 20th Maine Regiment, led by Medal of Honor recipient COL Joshua Chamberlain, launched a sudden, ferocious bayonet charge at Little Round Top which preserved the extreme flank of the Union’s defensive line at a critical moment of the battle; to have lost that flank would have likely meant a different outcome of the battle. John Langford liked thisJohn Langford liked thisBreak in Case of War. It's been a week since Mark Kershaw and I sat down with US Army veteran David Trentin, a 82nd Airborne Division, U.S. Army and USAREC career guy. He’s the first individual that we’ve interviewed for the upcoming feature length documentary ‘Break in Case of War’ that I’m directing. We talked about what it means to be Airborne, life in the 82nd, going to USAREC after multiple deployments with the 82nd, and then where he is in life now. This documentary while covering multiple topics, really focuses on 2-505 INF’s deployment to Samarra Iraq in 2006. We talked about his fifteen month deployment to Samarra. About operating in one of the most volatile places in the world at the height of the war. About the reality of belonging to a unit whose entire purpose is to be ready when the call comes. And about how those experiences stay with you long after the deployment ends. As an Infantryman turned filmmaker, these are the stories I feel called to tell. The journey for this doc is only beginning. In the coming weeks we head to the Los Angeles area to film our next character, Nick Cottrill MPA. #veteranshelpingveterans #82ndAirborne #filmmaking #documentary

Most people misunderstand the role of a field-grade officer. At the tactical level, leaders focus on execution. At the strategic level, leaders focus on vision. But field-grade officers live in the uncomfortable space between the two. We are expected to move fast. But also think deeply. Translate broad guidance into concrete action. While managing the friction that naturally exists inside large institutions. Done poorly, two things happen: Velocity without vision creates chaos. Vision without velocity creates irrelevance. The job of a field-grade officer is to ensure neither happens. It means absorbing uncertainty so junior leaders can focus on execution. It means translating intent into plans that units can actually execute. And it means protecting momentum while still asking the hard questions that prevent organizations from drifting. Over time, I’ve come to believe that this space, where vision meets velocity, is where field-grade officers provide the most value to the profession of arms. Grateful to have these thoughts published in the Field Artillery Professional Bulletin. “Where Vision Meets Velocity: Rules for Field-Grade Officers.” 🔗 Article: https://lnkd.in/ec7cwST2 For those currently serving as field-grade officers What lessons have shaped how you operate in this space between vision and execution? #Leadership #MissionCommand #FieldArtillery #USArmy #ProfessionOfArms

More research…more homework, and more prep work for my transition from the Army, I am learning how to translate my skills to potential future jobs and roles. Some of those roles are Senior Operations Manager, Senior Project/Program Manager, and Director of Operations 💡 What if I told you that some of the best Directors of Operations in America aren’t in corporate boardrooms yet, they’re wearing uniforms? Senior Enlisted Leaders (CSMs/SGMs) have been doing the work of a Director of Operations their entire careers: 🔹 Turning strategy into execution, taking a commander’s vision and making it actionable. 🔹 Running complex operations, synchronizing logistics, people, and resources under pressure. 🔹 Leading leaders, mentoring senior NCOs, and building high-performance teams. 🔹 Managing risk & resources, achieving results with limited time, people, and equipment. Sound familiar? That’s precisely what companies need in a Director of Operations. The titles are different, but the skills are the same: ➡️ Strategic planning ➡️ Operational oversight ➡️ Performance management ➡️ Leadership & culture building Corporate America has a considerable opportunity: CSMs/SGMs bring decades of proven operational leadership in the most challenging environments imaginable. 👉 If you’re hiring for operations leadership, don’t overlook them. They’ve already been preparing for this role their entire careers. #Leadership #Operations #Veterans #MilitaryTransition #DirectorOfOperations #Talent

Program management must be a verb. I am optimistic about the current round of military acquisitions reform. Giving portfolio executives the authorities to influence cost, schedule, and performance is the key step. Practical influence, personal accountability to match, and a bias for speed should bound complexity and clarify choices to deliver combat capability when needed.

V Federal Group is actively positioning for subcontract participation inside post-award federal programs. Our experience has been centered on execution support within prime-led environments — maintaining coordination, documentation, and reporting alignment once work is underway. We are interested in aligning with primes operating in VA, DoD, or GSA environments where sustained execution discipline matters more than acceleration.

#PersonalIdea One of biggest issues I see is the clog in getting contracts awarded and funded. I propose DoD moves to competitive grants that don’t require a contracting officer to award. A contracting officer certifies the call for proposals and the proposals to ensure no laws are broken. A 3 person review panel with no OCI issues selects the winners. Funds are then transferred to the selected teams via a Govt version of Venmo that just has contains approved companies. Why Grants? Grants have less requirements and you just expect a product. By using competitive grants to multiple companies then the government uses competition to get expected product. At the end of the grant, the government inputs a Amazon-like review of the company and the product. Any companies that have 3 or less stars becomes ineligible for future grants. Feel free to comment and tell me what you think. #DoD #MDA #federalfunding

Editorial: It Takes More Than a Hat — It Takes the Tools to Lead This morning, I had the chance to speak with a few past department commanders and senior vice commanders from across the American Legion community. The topic of discussion? Leadership — specifically, the kind we’ve been seeing (or not seeing) lately. There’s a growing trend that’s hard to ignore: individuals stepping up to run for high-level positions within the Legion — sometimes among the top four or five offices — without having first served as a district vice commander or district commander. Now, don’t get me wrong. Ambition isn’t the problem. In fact, ambition is a good thing. We need people who are passionate about the mission, eager to serve, and willing to lead. But passion without preparation leads to problems. Over the past year, we’ve seen what happens when individuals with few — or no — tools in their toolbox take on roles they aren’t equipped to handle. It’s not just a matter of missed opportunities. It’s a matter of real consequences: tens of thousands of dollars lost in membership, broken communication chains, and the sound of crickets where strong leadership and direction should be. Things stall. Morale drops. And the organization suffers. The American Legion is built on service, commitment, and community. That doesn’t just apply to veterans helping veterans — it applies to our leadership as well. Serving in progressively responsible roles like district vice commander or district commander isn’t just a checkbox — it’s how leaders learn the ropes, earn trust, and gain the experience they need to truly serve the organization. So the takeaway from this morning’s conversation was simple: We encourage everyone to get involved. Run for office. Step up. But take time to fill your toolbox along the way. Get the training. Do the work. Build the experience. Leadership in the American Legion isn’t about putting on a hat and saying, “Look at me.” It’s about putting in the work so that when you wear the hat, you’ve earned it — and you’re ready to lead with confidence, competence, and commitment. For God and Country and Service — let’s make sure we have the right tools for the job.

Amos Fox, Ph.D. wrote a great critique of the Army’s transition to Mobile Brigade Combat Teams (MBCT). I enjoy how he identifies how “FOMO” (Fear of Missing Out) propelling transformation rather than a clear operating concept or vision how we will fight. The Army seems to feeling FOMO in jealousy of the Marines’ littoral combat regiments. My best understanding is that the Army wants to mimic the Marines by pursuing light forces to conduct some sort of island-hopping campaign in the Pacific. Let the Marines worry about that unlikely scenario. The Army should focus on contributing to deterrence by denial (in accordance with the NSS and NDS) by demonstrating that it can fight and win the decisive battle in Taiwan. The MBCT does not do that. Worryingly, while the Army has stripped recon, security, fires, and engineering assets from brigades, the People’s Liberation Army has expanded those capabilities in their brigades. We risk a “missing middle” in our Army, in which divisions hoard assets and companies receive new capabilities, but brigades and battalions are unable to shape the fight for those companies or develop the situation for them. I am unclear of the operational framework how how we would employ these units in a future fight.

This is an extremely informed and granular analysis of what postsecondary institutions need to do to properly support veteran and active-duty learners in translating their military experience to the postsecondary setting. It would be interesting to review institution websites around the country to see what information they already provide, and how useful that information is to the intended audience.

Rob Long— The U.S. Army just issued an RFI under its new Strategic Capital Initiative that colleagues in the space, infrastructure, and industrial base communities should be aware of. The Army's premise is straightforward: annual appropriations alone cannot solve decades of deferred infrastructure modernization. The Army is inviting private capital to the table through Enhanced Use Leases, dual-use facility partnerships, anchor customer arrangements, and co-investment models designed to be commercially viable and self-sustaining without relying on appropriated funds as the sole return on investment. This should resonate with anyone who has worked the infrastructure problem at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. Critical range infrastructure is aging and capacity-constrained, caught between a historically deliberate government investment cycle and the pace of the commercial space industry that now depends on it. Space Florida and SLD 45 have made meaningful progress through existing partnership tools, but the scale of what is coming in launch tempo, on-orbit logistics, and space domain awareness may outpace what traditional models can address. The Army's SCI framework raises a question worth exploring: could CCSFS serve as an anchor partner in a structured public-private capital arrangement that modernizes shared range infrastructure, attracts private investment, and creates a self-sustaining dual-use ecosystem? The legal authorities already exist. Enhanced Use Leases, OTAs, and other flexible mechanisms are available to the Space Force. What may be missing is a deliberate enterprise-level framework that brings capital markets into the conversation the way the Army is now attempting. The RFI response deadline is April 2. Happy to discuss with colleagues who are working this space. Link to the Army RFI: https://lnkd.in/ekBTxJG5 #SpaceForce #SLD45 #SpaceFlorida #CCSFS #PublicPrivatePartnership #DefenseAcquisition #CommercialSpace

The Oregon Military Department continues to modernize armories across the state to improve readiness and better serve Oregon’s soldiers - and design-build has been key to that effort. OMD favors design-build for its streamlined delivery, clear accountability, and ability to select teams based on best value, not just lowest bid. This results in early cost certainty, faster timelines, and stronger outcomes. That trust-based approach aligns with Ausland, where architecture, engineering, and construction work as one team to deliver innovative solutions and superior results. To date, we’ve delivered more than $35 million in armory renovations across 350,000+ square feet, including projects in Grants Pass, Ashland, and Salem and we’re back in Salem now completing targeted upgrades, including a new PV solar array. At Ausland Group, we're setting the benchmark for design-build excellence, one project at a time.
