John Lynch liked thisJohn Lynch liked thisOver a decade ago, I spent months in the Persian Gulf running war games around scenarios that are now back in the headlines.. Early in my US Navy career I deployed to those waters multiple times. The Gulf is not a big ocean. It’s tight. Busy. Strategic. Tankers moving through narrow shipping lanes. Warships watching radar scopes. Everyone aware that a small miscalculation in a very small place could ripple across the world. We spent countless hours rehearsing what might happen there. Harassment of commercial shipping. Missile threats from shore. Fast boats probing defenses. Escalation cycles that could unfold in minutes. We studied the geography. We rehearsed the responses. We ran the scenarios again and again. Some of the technology has evolved. Drones are more prevalent now. Directed energy systems and lasers are entering the defensive toolkit. But in many ways, the scenarios unfolding today look remarkably similar to the ones we rehearsed years ago. Preparation matters. But what strikes me most watching the news today isn’t the tactics. It’s the passage of time. The officers commanding U.S. ships in the Gulf today are largely my peers. Years ago we were lieutenants standing watch together, running those drills and learning the trade. Today many of them are the captains responsible for those ships, those crews, and those decisions. That’s how service works. One generation trains. One generation prepares. Eventually, one generation inherits the watch. Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about that idea of generational responsibility—how wisdom and perspective get passed from one generation to the next. It’s one of the reasons I wrote Thoughts of the Father, a small book reflecting on the lessons my father—a World War II veteran—tried to pass down to me. My father has since passed away, but the conversations we had—and the lessons he shared—continue to shape how I think about leadership, service, faith and family. Because long before someone stands watch on a ship… or leads an organization… or raises a family… Someone usually took the time to pass something along. And every generation eventually inherits the watch. #Leadership #Legacy #Service

John Lynch liked thisJohn Lynch liked thisThis past Monday, Freeman K. Johnson '39 was celebrated as Cape Cod's most beloved United States Navy veteran. Freeman was 19 years old when he enlisted in the US Navy. He attended boot camp in Newport, Rhode Island before receiving his first assignment on the USS Augusta, followed by assignment on the USS St. Louis. On December 7th, while Freeman was a fireman in the #1 Boiler Room on the St. Louis, he heard the attack on Pearl Harbor–his immediate goal was to ensure the ship got underway and out of the harbor. In the Fall of 1942, Freeman was transferred off the St. Louis and to a holding area in San Francisco. From there, he was assigned to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and the USS Iowa, which was put into commission in March 1943. Later that year, the USS Iowa transported President Franklin Delano Roosevelt to Tehran, Iran to attend The Tehran Conference. After transporting FDR back to Norfolk, the Iowa traveled through the canal and became part of the Pacific Fleet. On September 2nd, 1945, Freeman was on the mast of the Iowa, witnessing the surrender being signed in Tokyo Bay, bringing an end to WWII. Thank you Freeman for your service. 🇺🇸

She was walking towards me down a hallway, and I stopped to introduce myself. She stopped and spent a few moments with me: she paid attention and listened as though I was the center of her universe. I said "Judy, there's so much construction going on on the campus". Her reply: "well, I'm a programmer and I know programmers do their best work when they can close the door and have no interruptions, that's why every employee has their own office". A programmer. Not a CEO, not Forbes 50, not even leader of this incredible organization. That short interaction that told me all I needed to know about Judy Faulkner. No flash, no sizzle, and no accountability to shareholders....just pure grounded passion, a laser sharp focus, and a deep understanding of human and organizational psychology.
