This is not a front-desk problem. This is not a physician problem. This is a governance failure. Many outpatient departments (OPDs) feel busy yet continue to lose value. The PDF explains why.

Appropriate billing for care in intensive outpatient programs (IOPs) is vital to payment integrity. As Cotiviti's SIU has observed, duplicate payments can occur when providers submit both per diem codes meant to cover multiple providers and treatment sessions while also billing for individual services. In some cases, claims were filed under providers who did not render the care. When those claims were denied, the same facilities resubmitted them. Sutter Health is doubling down on outpatient care in Placer County. The health system is opening a $4.75M urgent care in west Roseville this week, targeting a clear access gap and aiming to keep urgent care within a 20-minute drive for most patients. The new site is projected to handle 22,000–25,000 visits a year, pulling pressure off emergency departments while meeting demand from one of the region’s fastest-growing corridors. Find out about addressing #patientsafety risks in the outpatient setting from Michael Kozak, assistant #CMO at HealthLinc Community Health Center. The primary patient safety risks in the outpatient setting include data overload, #medication interactions, and communication breakdowns with patients, according to Kozak. There are two approaches to addressing data overload in the outpatient setting, Kozak explains. "There is a saying in medicine that dealing with data is like drinking from a fire hose. The whole notion of that saying is that drinking from a fire hose is impossible," Kozak says. "We must figure out what to ignore and focus on themes that we can learn from." The second approach to addressing data overload in the outpatient setting is managing data from patient testing. The data from tests is in the electronic medical record, Kozak explains, but the ability to bring that data together is more limited than it should be. "We can use technology to put this data together, summarize data, and use clinical decision support," Kozak says. "If you can use clinical decision support to provide you with updated answers, it can be immensely helpful." Read the full HealthLeaders story at https://lnkd.in/gVSVVWA3

How do I reduce the interruption tax so that I do not lose my flow state in my outpatient department? This helps me to concentrate on what the patient is saying and deliver better care. It's simple measures like putting a notice so that people do not knock on the door or unnecessarily interrupt. Taking the phone off the hook when a patient is in the room, silencing all phones during an outpatient consult, and minimizing interruptions during patient consultations are key to improving productivity.
