Deborah Deras was engaged as a consultant by Santa Barbara City College (SBCC) to design and develop an AI for Efficiency Certificate Program that prepares students to use artificial intelligence tools to increase productivity and remain competitive in today’s workforce.

As part of this engagement, Deras created 24 hours of applied curriculum focused on AI literacy, ethical awareness, and practical workplace applications. The certificate program was structured into three courses that progressively build students’ understanding and use of AI technologies.

The first course, Foundations of Artificial Intelligence, introduces students to core AI concepts, including vocabulary, ethical considerations, bias in AI systems, and the distinction between what AI is and what it is not. Students learn how AI systems work and how to critically evaluate AI-generated content.

The second course, Generative AI, focuses on the practical use of large language models for productivity and content creation. Students gain hands-on experience using platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, and Microsoft Copilot to support writing, research, brainstorming, and business communication.

The third course, AI for Graphics and Multimedia, introduces AI-powered creative tools including Canva AI, VEED, Sora, Flow, Nano, Banana, and Pompelli. Students learn how to use these tools to create graphics, video, and digital content more efficiently.

This certificate program equips learners with practical AI skills, enabling them to integrate emerging technologies into professional workflows and adapt to the rapidly evolving digital economy.

Participants learn how AI tools can support the creation of podcasts, ebooks, and books, as well as streamline content development, marketing, and digital product creation.
