Brandon Smith shared thisI have to admit. I take "coaching" for granted. As someone with a deep passion for being present with others as they navigate life, I just assume that if I tell a client to "spend 10% of your time coaching and developing your direct reports," they know what I mean. They don't and that's on me. If you want to be a better coach (at work and at home), consider the following practices: 1) Coaching is more about asking the right questions than giving the perfect advice. Open by asking a question. For example, consider any of the following: "What are you working on right now? If you could wave a magic wand, what would you change? What do you think you need to do going forward?" 2) Resist jumping in too early with solutions. If you are like most of my clients, you want to cut to the chase and give them the answer. Don't do that. Let them work through the solution on their own. This is where confidence and competence are developed. 3) Ask for permission before you offer advice. As my good friend and business partner, Randy Hain, would say, "Ask for permission" before you deliver advice. Consider the following: "I have a few thoughts. Would it be helpful if I shared them?" Practice these three coaching best practices, and you'll be on your way in no time. ________________ I’m Brandon Smith, executive coach, curer of workplace dysfunction, and co-founder of My Leadership Foundry. Brandon Smith shared thisIf everything is a priority, nothing is. Too much hot sauce creates chaos and confusion. But the right amount drives clarity and focus.
-
Brandon Smith shared thisI often ask my coaching clients, "Are you trying to win an MVP or are you trying to win a world championship?" Sometimes we get caught up doing the work ("Authoring") when we should be directing and leading the work ("Editing"). Head coaches set the strategy and set the culture. That’s your job as a leader: not to score the most points, but to lead your team to a championship.
-
Brandon Smith shared thisIf you’ve been mismanaging urgency, the fix isn’t complicated. If you want to handle urgency the right way... and make sure you’re not dumping unnecessary "hot sauce" from your leadership kitchen, start here: 1 — Own what you’re feeling. Down push anxiety down to your team. 2 — Get clear on priorities. Not everything is urgent. Decide what actually matters, then put real dates and deadlines behind it. 3 — Be intentional with the heat. Urgency should create focus, not chaos. Make sure your team is aligned on the "why," the "what," and the "when"—every time.

Brandon Smith shared thisWe live in a world where everything is urgent all of the time. And yet, rarely do leaders actually utilize urgency the right way. We’re kicking off a new series on managing urgency, starting with how to differentiate between what’s urgent from what’s important.

Brandon Smith shared thisI love the word “agency.” Agency, that sense that we are enough in the world, is the source of competence and confidence. When we have agency, we embrace change and possess resilience. So how do we develop agency? The starting place is sitting in the "Author" seat. As a leader, if you want to foster agency throughout your organization, you need to sit in the "Editor" seat and encourage others to sit in the "Author" seat. Play the role of coach. The starting place to foster agency in others is to require direct reports to always bring an "authored" point of view to every 1:1 with you. It will be uncomfortable for some, but make no mistake, it is the path to helping those around you grow as professionals and as people.

Sometimes, feedback says more about our profession than about one video. I received these two messages from Deanna Hayko while she was renewing her ICF ACC credentials: “Just a quick thank you! I’m in the process of renewing my ICF ACC credentials, and part of the renewal involves reviewing ICF’s core competencies videos. Generally, the videos don’t leave me with much of a takeaway, but your video on #4 Cultivates Trust and Safety was fantastic! Here’s to learning AND relearning how to be a non-judgmental human!” And later she added: “The checklist-like structure of many of the other videos is what falls flat for me.” That sentence stayed with me. The Core Competencies are more of a guiding way to be a coach rather than a simple checklist. Cultivating Trust and Safety is not something we perform; it is something we embody. It’s so natural to get wrapped up in doing rather than just being. When I focus on asking the next question, I often become a bit self-absorbed, and I might notice my awareness of the present moment slipping away. If I’m too focused on reaching the coaching goal, I also stay in my head, and I can lose my sense of presence That’s why revisiting the Core Competencies is so important. It's not about ticking boxes or just collecting hours. It's about truly deepening our shared humanity in the space we create together. And being a non-judgmental human is a lifelong work. Here is the video Deanna referred to, for those who are in renewal season or simply want to look again at Competency #4 with fresh eyes: https://lnkd.in/ejdTnw5g

Jonathan H. Westover, PhD, MPA, AF-CIPD, SFHEA a member of our MBA Standards Board published this exceptional article. As economies advance through each developmental stage, work doesn’t just “evolve” — it restructures itself around new coordination logics. Complexity theory helps clarify why old organizational architectures often collapse under the weight of new economic realities. We’re not just witnessing technological disruption; we’re watching the emergence of entirely different modes of value creation, governance, and capability building. What stands out in this article is its structured, systems-level view. Too often, leaders focus on isolated workforce initiatives without recognizing they’re operating inside an economic complexity shift. Adaptive governance, talent ecosystems, and capability strategies aren’t optional—they’re the hard infrastructure of sustainable growth. This perspective is crucial for policymakers and C-suites navigating AI-driven transitions.

Are you (or someone you know) facing an ICF PCC credential performance evaluation? My team and I have been assessing ICF performance evaluations since 2012, guiding leaders and coaches toward ACC, PCC, and MCC certification. So we've seen all the biggest mistakes, and worked to find simple ways to help. One of the biggest hurdles is the big leap from ACC to PCC. After more than a decade of listening to recorded coaching sessions, I’ve seen 4 simple shifts that make a real difference in passing PCC and set you up for MCC. If you or someone you know is preparing for PCC evaluations, these quick tips can help deepen your coaching sessions, which is exactly what ICF markers look for. When I worked toward my MCC, I remember how tough it was. Many coaches today feel the same overwhelm. It’s not you, the path really is challenging but also a worthy pursuit. That’s why I’m here: to make the process clearer and more supportive, so you can grow into the kind of coach you want to be. 👏

Strong organizations don’t just delegate projects. They engage their clinical and functional leaders to build systems. Core functions - like operations, quality, legal, and customer experience - need to support strategy. That alignment is where real value is created, and too often where it’s lost. I help organizations assess those systems and find practical ways to improve them. If that’s on your radar, I’d be happy to talk.

Sharing some of my favorite quotes on listening. Join me for a training on Resonant Listening on April 16th, from 6-8pm in Eliot, ME. Link to register is in first comment. “Listening is at the source of all great leadership. A key source of leadership failure is lack of listening.” - Otto Scharmer "Asking questions and listening for the strategies and ideas embedded in people’s own answers can be the greatest service a social change worker can give to a particular issue." – Fran Peavey "From a relational perspective, communication is not the simple "delivery of a message". Instead, a supportive and interested listening context can be crucial for helping the speaker 'unfold' and fine-tune their meaning in a process of creative discovery." - Rosa Zubizarreta-Ada, Ph.D. "We should all know this: that listening, not talking, is the gifted and great role, and the imaginative role. And the true listener is much more beloved, magnetic than the talker, and he is more effective and learns more and does more good." - Brenda Ueland #listening

I’m genuinely excited for the opportunity to demo coaching in this upcoming session. I see these moments as a shared commitment to growth. When each of us shows up intending to elevate our craft, something shifts. The energy builds. The room sharpens. The field strengthens. I continue to demo coaching — not because I’ve arrived (and certainly not because I enjoy having an audience… it actually makes me sweat a little) — but because staying in the arena keeps me honest. Modeling the work in real time stretches me. It exposes edges. It keeps me accountable to the standards that protect our clients and our profession. Will every moment be perfect? Unlikely. And that’s part of the discipline. I’m not above the work. I’m in it with you. I’m committed to our clients. I’m committed to this field. And I’m committed to upholding the level of coaching we say we stand for. I’m looking forward to learning alongside you. Questions to Consider: -What part of your coaching is strongest right now — and how consciously are you choosing to leverage it? -Where in your coaching do you sense comfort — and where do you sense the next stretch that would alter your impact? -If this session were to fundamentally shift one aspect of how you partner with clients, what would you want that shift to be?

Day 44 #Trivia from SMAGIK Advisory Inc. Many transformation initiatives stumble—not because of poor strategy, but because the people meant to drive the change don’t feel connected to it. Too often, leaders rely heavily on data, frameworks, and action plans. But facts alone rarely move hearts. Without a narrative that ties the change to a shared purpose, even the best initiatives struggle to gain traction. Strategic storytelling isn’t just a communication tool—it’s a leadership imperative. When leaders articulate the “why” through authentic, purpose-driven stories, they create emotional buy-in, helping teams see themselves in the journey. Have you seen storytelling shift alignment in your organization? I’d love to hear how you make it work. #LeadershipDevelopment #StrategicStorytelling #OrganizationalChange #ChangeLeadership #EmployeeEngagement #TransformationalLeadership #LeadershipCommunication #PurposeDrivenLeadership #NarrativeLeadership #StorytellingInBusiness #SMAGIKAdvisory #DeliveringSolutionsIsMagic

In the current environment, it is a matter of practicality that most U.S. companies have sought to review and de-risk their DEI programs and policies. While it is still early to conclude trends from the 2025 proxy season, prevalence of #DEI metrics will likely drop from 2024 levels as more companies consider removing or reframing their DEI approach and measurement.

Is humor in the workplace just "nice to have," or is it a high-level skill for driving psychological safety and resilience? In the second part of our series on humor in leadership, I’m joined by Dr. Paul R. Damiano, Ph.D. , President of Good Works Consulting (North Carolina) and creator of the "Funny Business" methodology. We dive into how humor, specifically through tools like cartoons, can help leaders and teams get "unstuck" and address the hidden organizational problems they’ve been avoiding. In this episode, we explore: 📌 The Power of Playfulness: How humor serves as a diagnostic tool for connection and navigating workplace tension. 📌 "Funny Business": A look at Paul’s methodology using cartoons to deepen self-awareness in leaders. (And we try it on me!) 📌 The Risks vs. Rewards: Is it dangerous to use humor in serious consulting, and what does the research say about "humorous leaders"? 📌 Practical Application: How to use humor to shift unhealthy group dynamics and improve leadership outcomes. Dr. Paul Damiano holds a Ph.D. in organizational psychology and has spent over 18 years leading Good Works Consulting. Prior to that, he was a Senior Trainer at the Center for Creative Leadership, bringing a wealth of high-level experience to his unique approach to leadership development. In this episode, I sit down with Leo Bottary—author of Peernovation and founder of Peernovation, LLC—to explore what truly makes teams thrive in today’s complex and collaborative work environments. With a rich background in CEO advisory groups and an unwavering commitment to psychological safety, Leo brings deep insight into the power of peers to transform team dynamics. From the core principles of servant leadership to the vital role of psychological safety in innovation and performance, Leo shares how the very best teams operate—and how leaders can intentionally create those conditions. In this episode, we cover: – Why psychological safety is not optional—but essential—for thriving teams – The five key factors that underpin peer-powered performance – How peer forums became a blueprint for high-performing teams – The critical difference between collaboration and cooperation – Why leadership is about creating the conditions for others to succeed One of my favourite takeaways? Thriving teams are intentional and create habits and rituals such as celebrating wins, reflect on progress and embed learning. I also love his tips when asking for help, which can feel uncomfortable. This episode is a must-listen for leaders who want to tap into the collective intelligence of their teams and create cultures where accountability, trust, and performance go hand-in-hand. I’d love to hear what stood out for you—let’s connect on LinkedIn and keep the conversation going. #leadership #psychologicalsafety #peerleadership #highperformingteams #peernovation #collaboration #thrivingteams

In today’s dynamic environment, traditional leadership alone doesn’t cut it. What’s needed is Adaptive Leadership—the ability to lead through complexity, ambiguity, and continuous change. From the lens of Agile, adaptive leaders embrace iteration over perfection. They’re not afraid to pivot when new information emerges. They create space for experimentation and feedback, fostering a culture of learning, not just performance. Through the lens of Innovation, adaptive leadership is about more than ideas—it's about mobilizing people to challenge assumptions, shift mindsets, and co-create new solutions. It's about surfacing hidden resistance and turning discomfort into progress. And from the lens of Resilience, adaptive leaders stay grounded when the terrain gets rough. They know how to regulate pressure, engage diverse perspectives, and keep teams moving forward—even when the path ahead isn't clear. In a world of constant disruption, adaptive leadership isn’t just a skill—it’s a strategic advantage. How are you practicing adaptive leadership in your team or organization? #AdaptiveLeadership #AgileLeadership #Innovation #Resilience #Agile #ChangeManagement #LeadershipDevelopment #FutureOfWork #Leadership #ProjectManagement #PMO #Teams

One of the primary reasons leadership training programs falter is that they focus solely on individual development rather than cultivating an organizational framework. Training a single leader in isolation can lead to fragmented strategies and inconsistent practices across teams. True leadership growth occurs when all leaders are empowered with a cohesive system that aligns their approaches and objectives. Without this collective understanding, each leader may inadvertently create silos that hinder collaboration and progress. To drive meaningful change, we must invest in a unified model that equips every leader to operate harmoniously within the organization. #LeadershipDevelopment #OrganizationalSuccess #CollaborativeGrowth

The Myth of “Waiting Until It’s the Right Time Many professionals say: “I’ll move when the timing is right.” But the right time rarely appears. It is constructed. Through: Financial runway. Validated leverage. Clear sequencing. Identity shift. The right time isn’t found. It’s built. Ownership favors preparation, not impulse. If you are ready you prepare to more type "PREPARE" in the reply.
