While my coaching work focuses specifically on helping introverted Managers and Directors navigate these transitions, the fundamentals of reclaiming your career narrative apply to everyone right now. If you are trying to find your footing today, here is a simple, protective weekly system to protect your energy and focus your search: 1️⃣ Step 1: Focus on Clarity Before Optimization. Don't touch your resume or LinkedIn profile until you have chosen your exact next directional step. Once you have that clarity, your profile stops being a resume copy-paste and becomes your personal career website. 2️⃣ Step 2: Know That Your Profile is Your Handshake. Whether you message a recruiter, reach out to a former colleague, or apply for a role, the very first thing they will do is read your profile. It needs to reflect your professional identity instantly. 3️⃣ Step 3: Diversify Beyond the Job Boards. Do not rely solely on LinkedIn job boards or automated AI recommendations. Many listed roles are ghost posts or outdated. Instead, build a target list of 10–15 companies and track their direct "Careers" pages. 4️⃣ Step 4: Protect Yourself from Scammers. Fake job listings and phishing schemes are at an all-time high. If an interview process feels incredibly rushed, requests financial information, or offers an immediate text-based hire, step back. 🟢 Job searching is an endurance sport. Don't try to go 24/7. Set a weekly rhythm: Spending 2 hours a day on targeted company outreach and profile alignment will yield a much higher ROI than 8 hours of mindless scrolling. Hiring executives don’t need a list of your daily tasks; they need to know how you lead. Here are 3 ways to shift your About section from a redundant resume to a strategic business case: 1️⃣ Pass the "Mobile Cutoff" Test On mobile devices, only the first 75–100 characters of your summary are visible before the "See more" link appears. If your opening line is "I am an experienced manager with 15 years of..." you’ve already lost them. Treat those first two lines like a headline. Lead with a strong, belief-based leadership philosophy that demands a click. 2️⃣ Drop the "Guru" Buzzwords If your summary relies on words like synergy, disruptive, visionary, or passionate, you are blending into the background. To AI scanners and savvy recruiters, these look like fluff used to hide a lack of results. Replace adjectives with evidence-based verbs: Scaled, Restructured, Mentored, Navigated. Let the facts prove the adjective. 3️⃣ Shift to Self-Advocacy Self-promotion shouts, "I'm the best." Self-advocacy quietly states, "Here is the problem I solved, the framework I used, and the quantifiable ROI it created." Ana Goehner shared this"Tell me about yourself." For an introverted Manager or Director, this is a challenging question in an interview. Most job search advice tells you to "sell yourself." But for my clients, "selling" feels like bragging. It feels fake. When I coach introverted leaders, we don't "sell." 🎯 We Position. Here is the difference: - Selling is trying to be the loudest candidate. - Positioning is showing them you are the most observant candidate. Instead of a 5-minute monologue, I teach my clients to use this: ▶️ You listen to the interviewer's deepest pain points for the first 10 minutes, then tie your specific skills directly to their problem. You aren't the candidate who talks the most. In a job market flooded with AI-generated applications, the referral is the only "fast track" left, but most introverted leaders handle the outreach all wrong. If you want to move from a "cold conversation" to a "hot referral," you need a narrative shift. You aren't "looking for work"; you are positioning your expertise. 💡 First, build rapport by liking people’s posts, reaching out in DMs, and starting a conversation (some sort of “yes, I know you a little bit”) before you ever ask for a call. Here is what you can do for high-level outreach: - Don’t just aim for the Hiring Manager. Look for people currently in the role you want or one level above it (e.g., Senior Managers or Senior Directors). They are the best source for "insider" culture and are often less guarded than recruiters. P.S. - You can also target former employees to get the real tea. - People feel pressured when asked for a job, but they love sharing their expertise. “I’ve been following [Company’s] growth in [specific area], and as someone leading similar initiatives, I’d love to ask one or two questions about how your team approaches [specific challenge].” - Don't let the call end without a clear path forward. “Based on what you’ve shared about the team’s goals, I believe my background in [insert result here] would be a strong fit. If I find a specific opening, would you be open to me sending my resume your way to ensure it reaches the right desk?” Avoid sending an email with your resume without asking first. If they are hesitant, don’t force it. Job searching for managers feels much harder in 2026. You are in the middle of the sandwich between individual contributors and upper-level management. Your focus should be on finding a strategy that works for you weekly. So you can spend time on applying for the right roles, networking, and reaching out to the right people, not chasing likes.
