Uzma Akser shared thisI wrote ‘The Boy Who Loved Vacuum Cleaners’ from a deeply personal place: to highlight the importance of understanding children who experience the world differently. As a neurodiversity consultant, I know how often children are misunderstood before they are understood. Their unique ways of thinking, feeling, and engaging with the world can be mistaken for defiance, distraction, or difficulty, when in reality they may simply need empathy, patience, and recognition. This story was written to open hearts, support connection, and remind families that different does not mean less. If this message speaks to you, please support me spread this message. #childrensauthor #autism #passionledlearning

Uzma Akser shared thisThe journey of self-acceptance isn’t about becoming someone new, it’s about finally allowing yourself to be who you have always been. Sam Farmer’s story as an autistic adult is a reminder that true happiness doesn’t come from chasing perfection or fitting into someone else’s expectations. It comes from understanding yourself, honouring your needs, and embracing your differences without shame. So many neurodivergent individuals grow up believing they have to mask, fix, or minimise who they are to be accepted. But the real shift happens when you stop asking, “How do I fit in?” and start asking, “Who am I - really?” Because when you truly know yourself, you begin to value yourself. And when you value yourself, you give yourself permission to be seen, to take up space, and to live authentically. You were never meant to be perfect. You were meant to be you. #Neurodiversity #AutisticAdults #SelfAcceptance #Unmasking #NeurodivergentVoices #MentalHealthAwareness #AuthenticLiving Sam Farmer

Uzma Akser shared this#mentalhealthawrenessweek is a powerful reminder that workplace wellbeing cannot be separated from lived experience. For me, this conversation is deeply personal. As a carer to a neurodivergent child, and as someone who has spent years supporting neurodivergent people, families, and organisations, I know how often invisible pressure goes unnoticed at work. A carer may be supporting a neurodivergent child, adult, parent, partner, or loved one while also trying to manage the demands of employment. That can create a constant weight that affects energy, confidence, focus, and overall wellbeing. In some cases, people are also managing their own neurodivergence at the same time, which can intensify the pressure even further. This is why I created my CPD-certified course, Neurodiversity + Carer Burnout: From Crisis to Corporate Advantage. It comes from an authentic place: from lived experience, from professional insight, and from a real understanding of how burnout shows up in the workplace when people are expected to keep going without the right support. This is not just a wellbeing issue. It is a leadership issue, a retention issue, and a culture issue. If this is relevant to your organisation, please connect with me on LinkedIn to enquire further and we can arrange a call. I am giving away the free 30/60/90 roadmap and case studies/statistics PDF that looks at caregiver burnout in a workplace. Uzma Akser shared thisNeurodiversity and carer burnout are often treated as separate issues, but in real workplaces they frequently overlap. A carer may be supporting a neurodivergent child, parent, partner, or loved one, while also managing the pressures of work. When this goes unnoticed, the impact can show up in stress, fatigue, reduced confidence, disengagement, and eventually burnout. That is why this topic matters so much to me. It is not just a wellbeing conversation. It is a workplace conversation. We created our CPD-certified course, Neurodiversity + Carer Burnout: From Crisis to Corporate Advantage, to help organisations respond early and more effectively. If you would like the free 30/60/90 roadmap and case studies/statistics PDF, visit our website and complete the short form. If you would like to explore how this could support your organisation, please connect with me on LinkedIn and we can arrange a call to discuss further. #carerburnout #neurodiversity #corporatework

Uzma Akser reposted thisUzma Akser reposted thisIn the ledger of leadership, we often obsess over the cost of salaries, benefits, and overhead, yet we overlook the most expensive line item of all: the loss of a good person. It will cost you significantly more to replace a dedicated employee than it will to simply treat them right in the first place. When a high-performer walks out the door, they take more than just their skills; they take their institutional knowledge, their relationships, and the very spirit of your culture. The financial cost of recruitment and training is high, but the emotional cost to the remaining team is even higher. People don’t leave for a slightly better paycheck; they leave when they feel invisible, undervalued, or ignored. Treating people right is the ultimate strategic advantage. It means leading with empathy, honoring their boundaries, and recognizing their humanity before their output. When you invest in your people’s hearts, they invest their souls in your mission. Loyalty isn’t bought—it is earned through the kindness and respect you show every single day. Stop the cycle of turnover and start building a culture of radical trust. Uzma Akser shared thisIn classrooms and learning environments, it’s not uncommon to see a student confidently navigate complex tasks such as solving problems, engaging deeply with content, and demonstrating high levels of understanding. Yet that same student may quietly struggle with something less visible: asking for help. For many learners, particularly those who are neurodivergent, seeking help is not simply a matter of confidence. It can be tied to challenges with executive functioning, communication, past experiences, or a deep-rooted need to mask difficulties. As a result, capability can be mistaken for independence, and silent struggle goes unnoticed. Educators play a crucial role in recognising these hidden barriers. This means looking beyond academic performance and tuning into patterns such as hesitation, avoidance, delayed submissions, or signs of overwhelm. Creating psychologically safe environments, offering structured opportunities to seek support, and normalising help-seeking as a strength rather than a weakness can make a significant difference. Practical strategies, such as check-in systems, visual prompts, scaffolding, and teaching around how and when to ask for help can empower students to access the support they need without fear or stigma. When we shift our perspective from “they’re doing fine” to “what might they not be showing?”, we begin to create truly inclusive learning spaces. If you are looking to deepen your understanding of these hidden challenges and build more inclusive practices, there are simple, evidence-informed approaches that can transform both educator awareness and student outcomes. To explore this topic in more depth and hear practical insights in action, listen to the full podcast episode on our YouTube channel with our guest Khawla Barley https://shorturl.at/k25Cu #schoolinclusionmatters

Uzma Akser shared thisThe past few weeks, from late March through April, have been incredibly full and deeply meaningful. I have had the privilege of contributing to three impactful autism-focused events: NovelticsGroup LLC , the IV International Autism Conference 2026 Abu Dhabi, UAE, and the inspiring symposium Abu Dhabi University While I was not able to attend in person, the opportunity to present, connect, and collaborate with global experts and thought leaders was truly invaluable. It has been a busy season, but one I feel genuinely grateful for. Many factors affect the outcome of therapy. The therapist you choose, is of course, key. Being able to build trust, feel understood and heard is a great beginning. Thinking about the issues you want to look at, or work on, is a helpful first step. This can then help direct your search to a therapist with skills and experience that fit your need. Lots of therapists now offer on-line therapy, but not all, so again think about what feels right for you. Traditional, in the same room therapy may be what feels most connecting and emotionally safe. Your availability and that of the therapist must align, as must session fees. Private therapy can be a financial commitment as any commitment to health and wellbeing. Look at websites as well as directories such as National Counselling and Psychotherapy Society. Look at the therapist’s photograph and check how you feel by what you see. The final step might be to speak to, or meet your chosen therapist and see how you feel interacting with them. This moment is probably one of the most important of all. Don’t be afraid to ‘interview’ more than one therapist to find the person you have confidence in and connect to, for the work you wish to do. Lastly, try not to be discouraged if the person you choose to work with doesn’t work out for you. Sometimes it can take a number of ‘goes’ to find the therapist that is ‘the one’. #NCPS #Therapy #Healing #SelfCare #counselling #EMDR #TraumaTherapy #AttachmentTrauma

Why Counselling Training Dedicates a Full Year to Skills Development 👉 Professional foundation: https://lnkd.in/dUmkb3rX Ken Kelly and Rory Lees-Oakes examine why counselling training in the UK focuses an entire year on skills development, and why this investment matters far beyond the therapy room. The Real Learning: The certificate in counselling skills could be better described as advanced relational dynamics. Whilst the curriculum covers skills, personal development, theory, quality, and diversity, the core learning is developing wholesome communication - a skillset that's never taught elsewhere. The Communication Problem: Most of us communicate to respond, not to understand. We're already planning our response whilst the other person is still speaking. Counselling skills training teaches you to listen to understand someone's frame of reference. This shift creates better quality relationships in any professional context. Evidence-Based Foundation: Lambert's research shows the therapeutic relationship accounts for the largest proportion of positive outcomes in therapy. The basis is the relationship. Developing strong relationships requires enhanced communication skills. Transferable Applications: Rory has trained radiologists, police officers, paramedics, doctors, and CEOs. Not all became therapists. They took these enhanced skills and applied them in their existing professional roles. Core Skills Developed: → Active listening without planning your response → Use of silence to allow people to say more → Reflection and paraphrasing to demonstrate understanding These skills become natural with practice, transitioning from conscious technique to fluid communication. In therapeutic contexts, combined with empathy, congruence, and unconditional positive regard, they create powerful experiences for clients. A full year of focused skills development isn't excessive, it's the foundation for relationship-based professional work. Whether you continue into therapeutic practice or apply these skills elsewhere, this training enhances your professional effectiveness permanently. #CounsellingEducation #ProfessionalSkills #TherapeuticRelationship #ProfessionalDevelopment #ActiveListening

We’re really honoured to have been invited to speak at the House of Lords next month. On 12 June, Lisa Carroll will be speaking alongside Dr Tristan Middleton, sharing learning from our Lifespace Trust supervision pilot at the Institute of Recovery from Childhood Trauma Best Practice Forum. This is work that feels properly important to us. We spend a lot of time alongside safeguarding and pastoral staff in schools – and we see the weight they carry. Supervision came from that. A simple idea really… creating space to think, reflect and not have to hold it all on your own. During the pilot, one practitioner said: “something had happened with one of my high profile pupils… I just cried for the entire hour. But actually it was then really productive… I would have been stressed about that for two weeks … Then I went back to a member of staff and thought, right, how do I do this rationally? And then we got it sorted.” That’s what this is about. We’ll be joining a brilliant mix of voices across the sector, including: 👉🏽 Cheryl Edwards FIFIP and Julia B. (Inclusion Education) 👉🏽 Laura Dennis and Mike Staines (Mulberry Bush) 👉🏽 Dr. Rachel Briggs and Jenny Bowers (Supervision in Education Community of Practice) 👉🏽 Lisa Lea-Weston and Penny Sturt (Talking Heads Supervision) 👉🏽 Immaculada Matthews and Richard Kettley (Place2Be / Supervision in Education Network) The event will be a real mix of school leaders, practitioners and researchers – all thinking about how supervision can better support staff and, in turn, young people. We’re looking forward to sharing what we’ve learnt – and learning from others as this work grows across the sector. Huge thanks to Dr Jon Reid and the IRCT team for the invitation to participate.

Morning routines can anchor a restless mind. In my Manchester practice I often recommend a brief “three-breath check-in”: inhale for three, exhale for three, note one small intention, then carry on. It’s simple, predictable and especially helpful for neurodivergent clients who find calm in structure. Trauma-informed and culturally aware, this approach meets experience without pressure. Would trying a three-breath check-in feel doable for you tomorrow? Learn more about practical support for anxiety and low mood: https://wix.to/aQkBU5S #MentalHealth #AnxietySupport #Manchester

This is a vital read for anyone involved in education and school evaluation - not just for those who work in or are familiar with the English system, but also where the same patterns may arise via performativity and high-stakes evaluative models in other contexts besides. An excellent piece of research, though simultaneously a deeply challenging and emotive subject about which to read.

Building resilience in teens is not just about toughening them up; it's about equipping them with tools to navigate life's challenges with confidence and calm. Group sessions and mindfulness workshops offer powerful ways to nurture this resilience. In a group setting, teens find a safe space to share experiences, realise they are not alone, and develop empathy. Mindfulness teaches them to stay present and manage overwhelming emotions, which is crucial during those turbulent years. For instance, recent sessions with teens showed how practising mindful breathing helped reduce anxiety before exams, while group discussions fostered a sense of belonging and mutual support. This combination creates a supportive environment where teens learn coping skills, emotional regulation, and self-awareness. These are the foundations of resilience that will serve them well into adulthood. How do you think group sessions or mindfulness could impact the teens in your community? #soundtherapy #onlinetherapy #onlinesupervision #neurodivergenttherapy #counsellingUK #adolescentpyschotherapy #naturetherapy #educationalwellbeingsupport #soundtherapy #onlinetherapy #onlinesupervision #neurodivergenttherapy #counsellingUK #adolescentpyschotherapy #naturetherapy #educationalwellbeingsupport

Teaching in Scotland is emotionally demanding. And for many teachers, the pressure has never been greater. Workload, staffing shortages, accountability, and the emotional labour of supporting young people can leave teachers feeling exhausted, overwhelmed, and questioning themselves — even when they are deeply committed and capable. Psychodynamic counselling and psychotherapy offer a different kind of support. Rather than focusing only on “coping strategies”, psychodynamic therapy creates a confidential, reflective space to explore the emotional impact of teaching. This can include feelings of guilt about not doing enough, anger that feels hard to express, or a loss of confidence and professional identity. In-person therapy can be particularly powerful. Being in the same room allows for depth, emotional attunement, and a sense of being fully seen and held in mind — something many teachers rarely experience while caring for others every day. With over 20 years’ experience in Scottish secondary education, I bring a lived understanding of the realities teachers face: the classroom, the staffroom, inspections, and the emotional weight of the role. This insight allows me to meet teachers with empathy, clarity, and respect for the complexity of their work. Supporting the mental health of teachers is not a luxury. It is essential — for teachers themselves and for the future of Scottish education. You don’t have to carry it alone. The Education Select Committee’s report on Solving the SEND Crisis is a huge step forward 👏 As a SEND Team Manager with over a decade of experience, I welcome the strong focus on accountability. ✅ Keeping children and young people’s statutory rights intact. ✅ Ofsted & CQC holding local authorities and schools to account when they fail children with SEND. ✅ Extending Ombudsman powers to cover delivery of EHCPs. ✅ Ensuring the SEND Tribunal can issue legally binding rulings to health services — not just education. Too often, I’ve seen young people let down when schools fail to provide legally required support or when health services avoid accountability, leaving education to carry the weight. This report gives local authorities the leverage to act, encourages health to step up, and ensures schools meet their responsibilities. If fully implemented, it could rebuild parental trust and transform SEND into a system that is equitable, consistent, and truly child-centred. #SEND #Inclusion #Education #Accountability #Leadership #ChildrenFirst
