In the middle of the 2000s (something like 2004-2006) I was watching an animated TV series, whose characters were mice.

There was a city with a citadel, and guards (also mice) were guarding it.

I remember that this series was quite long, and I was watching it for several months.

The appearance of characters reminds me of Mouse Guard:

Image from Mouse Guard comic, appearance of characters in this comic is close to the characters of the series under question.

But in this series, the mice had smaller heads (more anthropomorphic).

This is Redwall (1999–2002).

The show was based on the Redwall novels by Brian Jacques and ran for three seasons.

Matthias is a mouse who lives at Redwall Abbey, a fortress under constant siege from evil rats. When the image of a great mouse-warrior begins to speak to him, he realizes that his destiny is to be the successor to a great warrior.
