The 4th edition of the ALKEEMIA Battery Forum 2026 took place in the heart of Venice last week bringing together #industry 🏭 and #research 🔬 in the field of advanced battery 🔋 #materials and #technologies. Luca Belforte from Centro Ricerche Fiat showed results from #Digicell, in particular on advanced #characterization of battery #electrodes, using 👉 #Nanoidentation, 👉 Focused Ion Beam #tomography and 👉 #AI tools. He says: "It was an incredible occasion of networking between different industries focused on the same market. Cooperation was the most valuable word." The forum offered a great opportunity to investigate current trends 💡 in innovative #battery materials and #manufacturing processes, supply chain developments, European battery #ecosystem autonomy.

🔋 New publication alert 🔋 I am very proud of the teamwork and dedication that went into our latest publication, which just appeared in Advanced Energy Materials Wiley. As Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) step into the energy market spotlight, understanding how to optimize them from the ground up is more important than ever. In this new paper, we set out to bridge the gap between #electrode #manufacturing processes and actual electrochemical performance. By looking closely at hard carbon (HC) negative electrodes, we explored how varying slurry solid content and calendering degrees impact the 3D microstructure. A few highlights of our approach: 🔬 Advanced #Characterization: We used #DeepLearning-assisted FIB-SEM to extract the real shape of HC particles. ⚙️ #Mechanical Modeling: We fed this data into a #DiscreteElementMethod model to understand calendering behavior and current collector deformation. ⚡ #Electrochemical Simulation: We used #FiniteElementMethod modeling to simulate performance, validating our digital microstructures against experimental results. The result is a combined experimental and mesoscopic modeling framework that we hope will provide useful guidelines for optimizing SIB electrode production. Huge congratulations to my brilliant PhD students Soorya Saravanan, Imelda Cardenas Sierra, and Pei Sun, as well as my outstanding postdocs Hari Raj and Francisco Fernandez. I also want to express my gratitude to our fantastic collaborators at Università degli Studi Roma Tre (Daniele Duranti, Mahnoor Nafees, Marco Sebastiani), LAMFA Université de Picardie Jules Verne (UPJV) (Paul Vigneux) and IFP Energies nouvelles (Maxime Moreaud and Martin Petit). Many thanks also to our funders for making this work possible. And last but not least, special thanks to Xiaolin Li from Pacific Northwest National Laboratory for the kind invitation!
