I'm running Ubuntu 24.04.3 with Gnome 46.0 and need to have app windows maximized on launch. I tried One Window Wonderland (https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/5696/one-window-wonderland/) Gnome extension, but it doesn't work (https://github.com/jqno/gnome-one-window-wonderland/issues/12). Are there any other working alternatives? If not, are there any other desktops with this functionality?

Xorg

If you are still running Xorg, then devilspie2 is the way to automatically have windows in the maximized state when launched.

Wayland

Many — important and commonly used — applications, including Firefox and other browsers, the gedit text editor, Files file manager, LibreOffice, Papers, … remember the state of their window. For these applications, it suffices to launch them a first time, then maximize their window. Next time, they also will launch maximized.

However, if you need to deal with applications that do not remember window size, there are still options, that differ between different desktop environments and Wayland composers.

Gnome Shell

The Gnome Shell extension Maximized by default actually reborn by Stiggimy will maximize all newly created normal windows that can be maximized, i.e., not dialog boxes. Unfortunatelly, the extension does not offer options to exclude certain windows.

KDE desktop

KDE desktop provides more control to the user through its Window Rules system.

Tiling window managers

These by design control the size of a new window — the application does and cannot interfer here in window placement (unless you make it a floating window).

    Since Wayland blocks traditional tools like devilspie2, the community has developed extensions to handle this. For Ubuntu 24.04 (which uses Gnome 46), you can use: Maximize Window Into New Workspace, Maximize Lonely Window, and Maximized by default. Commented 22 hours ago
  • @karel comments suggested that that extension Maximized by default also maximizes dialog boxes. However, in my testing, that does not seem the case, so yes, it is an option worth trying. I will add it to the question. Commented 19 hours ago
