That would be unsurprisingly a waste of my own time and energy. That commentator is partially correct with certain outdated aspects, but not a single commentator can be 100% correct with their opinions.
If you're delusionally believing that a random commentator with only one questionable article referenced with no amendments done to it whatsoever, and assuming it "put me in my place", then it's a loophole in your own thinking process and logical reasoning for not even attempting to do the bare minimum to do your own research. This is not the place to spoonfeed, after all.

It's 8-900 usually, probably sells worse then xperias (xperias still have their own little fan base), but has the same soc, bigger battery, better charging, bigger screen etc. It's completely doable

Do you think sony can get 8 e... moreFully aware of that, but if you look at say nothing who started way after sony, and at the fact sony signed a 5 year exclusivity deal with qualcomm, sony should be able to get a relatively good deal. They aren't new and they still sell a few phones so economies of scale isn't a factor. It's just greed. Sony could undercut if they wanted to but don't.
Plus if you look at how long it took them to get LTPO, UFS 4.0, and a couple other features you'd think the cost to make each phone would actually be lower then companies like ASUS
Oh and moto purely use mediatek in their edge lineup because snapdragon chips are way more expensive. It's not to do with economies of scale, it's purely that the cost per chip is rediculous with snapdragon because they don't believe they have competition.

I feel like Sony doesn't know their market for the phone line. It's leading to very expensive do-all phones. I don't need all the features at once.
I love my Xperia 1 V for media: front-facing speakers, microSD, screen resolution, and NO NOTCH disrupting the screen. I don't need a super good camera, I'd rather have an idiot-proof camera app that handles settings for me, I should prob install GCam from the Pixels.
Meanwhile my BF only cares about two things: camera quality, and screen brightness. He wants the manual features in the camera and the optical zoom.
Also the naming scheme is still awful. I can't tell my family "just get an Xperia" because there are so many models.

First, Sony went and pushed out Ericsson out of SonyEricsson phones. They also pushed out Sony from Sony Vaio (last time I checked it was "Vaio the laptop brand by noname owner"). Now they seem to be doing this to Sony phones.
When they say things like "a very important business for us", all they mean is "it won't be cheap". What I'm guessing is they want to sell this business to a third party and want a higher price (as if saying "we're not discarding Sony phones, it's "a very important business for us"").
Although it's just a primitive guess based on their previous actions, as well as similar actions by other large corporations. LG was an exception, they didn't sell their mobile division (from what I heard, sale didn't go through), they simply shut it down. The symptoms were similar - they stopped selling in most of Europe, severely limiting availability, limited hardware improvements in latest generations while keeping the price the same for 2 years, even after mobile division declared bankruptcy. Looked like they intentionally ran the company into the ground with political maneuvers (or so some speculated). This behavior isn't new for Sony, so I guess we could be witnessing something similar in mobile phone division of Sony.
Just a guess, though.
