I don't care what's out there today. What matters to me is who was first (4K120fps HDR rec on all lenses First in the world).

itsmartindoingthings, 08 Aug 2025Saw your discussion with Pablo and just wanna say he's super cringe and trying to live in... moreYeah, it's absolutely hilarious how they had to stick to "But my phone can shoot macro and 4K120" while ignoring the obvious elephant in the room, which is the poor image quality of Xperia 1 VII's tele camera *in general* due to its small sensor paired with a mediocre lens. I use telephoto cameras on my phone to take photos of distant objects 98% of the time, and if they suck at capturing decent images in this particular use case, I wouldn't even consider using them lol.
It's good that my Find X8 Ultra can capture decent macro shots because there are moments where I want to get up really close to the subject, but claiming that a particular camera/lens is good *solely because* it has a very short MFT is simply ridiculous, and tone-deaf to an extent.

Good photographer can work with potato but they can make even better stuff with better hardware, and that's a fact
I happenned to try the 1MK6 once and the telephoto is full of noise in the shadow in a well-lit indoor with natural sunlight as well, which is not something you should expect from a 1400 dollar phone.
The fact that Pablo has to pull out that "no one cares about macro" or "show me oppo pictures" "HLG video is better" while showing a very over-processed phone-look video or "chinese phones have no soul" shows that he never cared, or have actual knowledge & understanding on what those phone and those Chinese OEMs have achieved. Even the best, Sony LYT-900 1" sensor was a joint collab between Sony & Xiaomi.

Thanks for your concerns, but I have no intention whatsoever to provide him with my photos anyway, for the reason I've already mentioned before. If I find a subject that I can't upload onto my SNS accounts (e.g. Cockroach or caterpillar) then I might change my mind though lol.

He only mentioned Oppo because you told him to buy a Xiaomi phone after he had compared its market share in Japan to Sony's.
I'm not denying that Xperia could become a great photo or video recording device for those who thoroughly love using it and understand its strengths and quirks. In the end though, smartphones are still common consumer electronics and judged as ones as long as companies advertise them as ones. You liked the tele on Xperia for its strengths from a video enthusiast standpoint, and Nick disliked it for its weaknesses from a general consumer (and a photo enthusiast if his story is true) standpoint.
That is how I see this whole discussion, two parallel lines that would never cross. I don't see any problem with your and Nick's respective arguments, but with the way that the convo is carried out. If I were in your or Nick's position, I would have stopped replying to the other guy at this point. It feels so pointless.

PS Telephoto lens in 1V doesnt have macro mode and it is amaizing lens for video shots from 0.2-1 meter because give you bokeh and parallax effect. if you watch video carfuly at the end there is parallax without software effects. For me it is amazing like for phone. You dont understand what you saw.

Oppo uses 50MP sensor so you can crop in to shoot 12MP shot at 140mm field of view though.
Anyway this guy was clearly trying to lure you into macro convo where he felt more confident in his argument, when you were focusing on a more generic debate about overall image quality that is more relevant to the rest of the world.
He might be politely asking you to give him your set of photos while using more of his macro photos as a bait, but do not fall for it. This smells of a classic example of sealioning where one person endlessly asks for proofs and explanations for the other person's argument while disregarding them all when they are provided. I have seen this kind of online debate before and I can say this confidence, you are wasting your time arguing with this man.

1. The first anon user was commenting on the general quality issue with the tele lens on Xperia 1 Mark 7 by quoting gsma review.
2. You came in and defended it by highlighting its video feature, notably its ability to shoot a slow motion macro footage in 4K at a wide color space. Here you effectively diverted the convo away from the anon's generic image quality concern to this specific slow motion macro recording.
3. Nick came in and shifted the convo back to the generic image quality feature. He said that Xperia's tele lens is still poor because it fails in more basic tasks.
4. You showed off your videos to prove how great it is at taking a slow motion videos. Nick praised your capability as a videographer, but not your phone. Then Nick restated that you and him had been talking about different things all along and suggested this convo should be ended. He also said that he enjoys using Find X8 Ultra, because he cares about image quality.
5. You diverted the convo again so that you could go back to talk about macro, showing off some macro photos you took with Xperia. Nick didn't like the results. At the same time, he said a skilled photographer would be able to take nice photos with a mediocre shooting equipment, implying your sample photos didn't help support your argument.
6. Offended by his response, you declared the end of convo. You also wrongly claimed that Find X8 Ultra's tele is not macro capable, and urged him to show off his photos.
7. Nick corrected you, declined your request to provode him with photos and also agreeded that the convo should end.
8. You urged him (again) to provide his photos to you, despite that you showed an intention to end the convo at 7.
It is widely acknowledged even by Sony fans that the biggest downside of Xperia's camera setup is the tele. The small sensor already falls behind its rivals during the day but struggles even more immensely at night. That is just how physics work, a smaller sensor collects less light than a larger sensor, and the anon & Nick had been sticking to that topic throughout the convo. It is pointless for you to push this 'It's amazing for macro video so it doesn't suck' narrative, because Nick is talking about the overall usability as a phone camera. I know you would shower Sony with praise if next year Xperia 1 Mark 8 would be released with a 4 times larger tele sensor to stay competitive with the rest anyway.

Xperia photos have almost ZERO sharpering and I can proof that but first show the world your macro Oppo beast.
You are the one who has a problem with Xperia (in the article about Xperia, not Oppo) without having it or testing it, not me. Something like a BMW fan on a Mercedes forum

All the photos I've taken with my phones/cameras have a chance to go into my social media accounts associated with my real name, and I won't let them go to waste just to prove my photographic skill to an anonymous user on an online smartphone news website.
I already said that your photos confirmed the impression that I have had of Xperia 1 VII, and no amount of additional samples provided by you would change my mind at this point. I know that your phone is macro-capable; you don't need to keep emphasising that in your comment. I didn't like what I saw and that's pretty much all that I can say about your photos.

Show your quality photos, let world say wow. We are waiting. You dont understand how tiny some of those elements were. On one photo there is asphalt (road) - 4th photo with insect with size about 1.5cm. On first photo you see moss and area that size is like 3cm.

It's so obvious... these photos are sharpened, while taking a sharp photo in this mode is extremely difficult from hand (this is due to the fact that it's a telephoto macro lens and micro-movement is like BIG movement on the sensor side). End of this conversation. We all know that your chinese phone have better macro mode even if there is no macro telephoto lens mode inside that phone.

Don't bo... moreIt becomes obvious from the shooting experience, as well as from the end result, whether a manufacturer has put a lot of thought into designing a camera. At least on my Find X8 Ultra, it's pretty evident that Oppo designed the whole thing so that anyone who is remotely passionate about photography could have a lot of fun shooting with it. I feel the "soul" in it, but it's OK that you don't feel the same way due to its lack of prestige in the photography industry.
To answer your question - I looked into the samples you provided. I'm not trying to claim that you're a bad photographer based on these photos alone, but as I mentioned in my previous comment, I didn't like them and they only served to further confirm my assumption that the telephoto camera on Xperia 1 VII is quite mediocre as they showcase the weakness of that camera that I have already seen multiple times in the past on different samples. Sorry.

https://ibb.... moreIf one is skilled enough at photography, even if they are forced to use the worst equipment in the world, they can still take a nice photo with it. A few years back, I shot a bunch of great-looking photos of a concert (As a paying audience, not professionally of course) mainly with my Huawei P30. In today's standard, its telephoto camera is absolutely terrible - a minuscule type 1/4" 8MP sensor behind a fixed 80mm F2.4 lens.. So I had to be very careful with shutter speed settings and timing to make sure that photos wouldn't turn out to be a completely noisy mess.
No offence to you, but except for the image showing a bee's back, I didn't like the samples you provided. All of your photos have a lot of sharpening baked in, and the bokeh looks very nervous and distracting. There's only so much a combination of a lens with mediocre microcontrast and a tiny sensor could do, and it clearly shows.
No need to get overly aggro in your response. Anyone could get an amazing shot even with a poor camera as long as they are lucky enough to get the timing, settings and composition right. However, better hardware could always reduce the chance of getting bad photos, especially in challenging lighting, and this is important for smartphone cameras where most people just shoot in auto. I, for one, prefer having a nice big sensor with a sharp prime lens over a small sensor paired with a zoom lens on any day of my life, because I care about the quality of the photos I take.

Maybe Im using wrong this telephoto, what should I do to make better photos? This true non-digital bokeh is soo BAD! Ahhh I know.. I should make photo of Cityhall clock or church from 1km and that will be sooooo amazing. ;)
