Oppo Samsung Xiaomi vivo Huawei Android Camera comparison

Ultrawide camera comparison: Daylight

We normally kick off camera reviews with the 'main' (moderately wide) cameras, but for the purposes of this particular comparison, we figured we'd run the focal length range from widest to longest. So we'll start with the ultrawide cameras instead.

Ultra camera comparison Huawei Pura 80 Ultra • Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra • vivo X200 Ultra • Xiaomi 15 Ultra • Oppo Find X8 Ultra

Samsung brought its ultrawide camera into this century with the S25 Ultra, and now the best Galaxy cameraphone finally has a reasonably contemporary 50MP Tetrapixel sensor. Ultimately, it's still the same size as the conventional RGB units of previous Galaxy Ultras, though.

That said, it's larger than the imagers that the Oppo and the Xiaomi have in their ultrawide cameras. Those two have clearly prioritized allocating space for the telephotos, and the ultrawides took a step back in sensor size, with the reduction being more dramatic on the Oppo (from 1/1.95" on the X7 Ultra) than it is on the Xiaomi (1/2.51" on the 14 Ultra) - both models now adopt the same 1/2.76" Samsung sensor.

We are looking at serious camera gear from all Ultras, but they all pale in size comparison to the vivo's. The X200 Ultra uses a main camera-grade sensor for its ultrawide, the same 1/1.28" type unite as on its 35mm camera. That gives it roughly 3.6x the area of the sensors in the Find and the Xiaomi, and 3.0x that of the Galaxy. It's a massive difference.

When it comes to the Huawei, we don't really have reliable information about what size sensor is being used.

Focal lengths are all in the low to mid double digits. Samsung and Huawei are tied for the widest, their EXIF data fields reporting 13mm, while the Oppo's files say 15mm. Xiaomi and vivo are in the middle, at 14mm.

All of these ultrawide cameras feature autofocus, which is to be expected at this level, but it's still worth mentioning.

Finally getting to have a look at some samples, we can see some predictable outcomes and some initial hints of inclinations in processing. The vivo delivers the sharpest image, with the finest rendition of intricate detail - you'd think that its sheer sensor size advantage wouldn't have much to do with performance in bright daylight conditions among competitors with essentially the same resolution, but here we are.

The Xiaomi and the Oppo do quite well too, actually, with nuances in sharpening (we probably like the more conservative Xiaomi better, but that's splitting hairs). The Huawei is also not too shabby, despite being a little disadvantaged in nominal resolution. It's the Galaxy that is the least exciting in terms of detail - there's just a general softness to its ultrawide shots.

Main camera comparison: Daylight

The main cameras of four of the phones follow a conventional approach and offer a wide 23mm-equivalent focal length - the more common 24mm of yesteryear is apparently more difficult to package and makers gradually shifted a mil down. The fifth phone, the vivo X200 Ultra, has a 35mm-equivalent main camera - that complicates comparisons a little, but makes for some interesting findings.

In order to explore more potential shooting scenarios, we shot all five phones at three focal lengths:

  • 23-25mm (native for four of the Ultras)
  • 35mm (native for vivo X200 Ultra)
  • 46-50mm (2x digital zoom for all Ultras)

The vivo gets its 24mm shots from the ultrawide camera, so it may not be too competitive at that zoom level, while the other three should be a bit less handicapped at 35mm - but you'll get to see the shots below.

The Huawei, Oppo, and Xiaomi Ultras still feature 1.0-inch type sensors on their main cameras - the vivo Ultra abandoned that because of its alternative approach. The Samsung is firmly sticking to the 1/1.3 sensor size that they adopted in 2020 and have been using ever since, in one form or another (first at 108MP, and then at 200MP with the the S23 Ultra and on). The vivo is, in a way, also at 1/1.3", give or take.

The Find X8 Ultra has an f/1.8 aperture on its lens, while the Xiaomi is brighter at 1/1.6 (f1.63, actually, if you're into meaningless precision). For this year's model, Xiaomi opted out of the changeable aperture that they had on the 14 Ultra. The Pura 80 Ultra, on the other hand, does keep the variable aperture - f/1.6 to f/4.0, as on the old Xiaomi. The Galaxy's aperture is f/1.7, and so is the vivo's. Naturally, all four lenses are stabilized.

Wide angle - 23-25mm

One thing is certain at the 24-ish millimeter focal length - the vivo isn't remotely competitive in terms of detail and if you find yourself shooting at that zoom level often, the X200 Ultra's unusual setup won't serve you well. Perhaps the finest detail comes from the Xiaomi, with the Oppo a close second, and we'd say the Huawei has an advantage over the Galaxy.

The Xiaomi might struggle a bit with nearby subjects though, its extra wide aperture giving it a very shallow depth of field. The Oppo's less extreme f/1.8 gives it an edge in these conditions, while the Pura's ability to stop down allows you to control how much of the subject is in focus (but, realistically, the default f/2.0 is good enough in most situations).

Standard - 35mm

At 35mm, the vivo is in its element, delivering excellent results. The thing is though, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra does spectacularly well here too - it's generally no worse than the vivo, to our eyes. The Oppo isn't half bad, but not quite as sharp, while the Galaxy is more like hanging in there, than truly competing. The Huawei is struggling to keep up here.

Standard - 46-50mm (2x zoom)

The field gets more or less leveled at 2x zoom with none of the handsets being at their native optical focal length. Some phones have a 2x shortcut, while others call it 50mm, but the end result in terms of coverage is very similar.

The detail rendition varies significantly, with the Huawei delivering so-so sharpness, and the others improving progressively. The Galaxy and the vivo are in the middle, and the Xiaomi and the Oppo are probably trading blows at the top, depending on subject matter and lighting.
